Tokyo Disneyland - Preview Day Ticket & Early Brochure

Let’s take a detour to a far away Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland! Let’s also set the clock back to the beginning with this neat “Preview Day Only” ticket. The Park opened April 15, 1983, so this must have been before that? If that’s a date code in red, I can only guess that “58.3-24” is March 24th, 1983? Maybe Tokyo Magic over at "Meet the Word" blog can tell us, oh and be sure to check out the amazing “Meet the World” blog (link).

From 1981 here’s a nice glossy brochure detailing what was being planned for Tokyo Disneyland.

Lots of fun details in here, from what I can tell, it came out pretty much as planned. After checking out the place in detail (check out Meet the World back posts for a super tour) I really want to visit this park!

In the description of Fantasyland there is mention of the Mickey Mouse Revue. This was a Walt Disney World original attraction (from 1971) that was moved to Tokyo for the opening of Tokyo Disneyland. According to the current TDL website (link) the Mickey Mouse Revue is “closing permanently May 25, 2009”. I hear it is to be replaced with “Mickey's PhilharMagic” I know some folks like that Phihar Magic show, but it really is awful, just another lame 3-D movie along the lines of “Honey I Shrunk the Audience”. What are they going to do with all those audio-animatronics? I know a large theater in Tomorrowland Disneyland Anaheim with a stale 3-D show that would be perfect for the Mickey Mouse Revue!

Man, I would love to see Tokyo Disneyland! My friends think I'm nuts... "You want to got to Tokyo to see DISNEYLAND??". Well, not just the park, I'd like to see other stuff too! And Tokyo Disney Sea looks amazing...

The "58" on the Preview Day ticket, IIBC, refers to the 58th year of the Showa ("Enlightened Peace") Era (as in the reign of the late Emperor Hirohito, dating to his ascendency to the throne in 1926); i.e., 1984, per the Japanese calendar.

For comparison, 2009, in Japanese terms, is year 19 of the current Heisei ("Achievement of Universal Peace") Era (as in the reign of the current Emperor Akihito, who took the throne on the 1990 decease of his father, the Showa Emperor).

Thank you so much for the mention and for the link to my blog! I have been wanting to do a post on the Mickey Mouse Revue for a while, but I've delayed it because it will probably have to be a large multiple-part series. Maybe I should get started on that since it's days are numbered. I am very sorry to see that it is being replaced and I have also wondered what will happen to all those audio-animatronic figures. I think it would be a good fit for the Muppet theater in DCA. They could even update it a bit....but knowing Disney, I doubt something like that would ever happen. :(

Thank you, again!!!

The Tokyo Disneyland Grand Opening was a spectacular event. I was able to attend this with my father. He was working with the media at the time. He was stationed at Yokota Air Force Base, and worked as a reporte for The Pacific Stars and Stripes. Everything was free that day, all rides, all food. What a great day. I still have my souveneir ticket to this day.
