A visit to Monsanto's Adventure Thru Inner Space

Here's a fun little brochure dated 1967 (WED Enterprises). Great drawings of Monsanto's Adventure Thru Inner Space.

It's a little souvenir at just 3 1/2" by 6", but boy does it make up for its small size with Fantastic art work.

Magic Mountain - 1977 Ticket and Postcard Pack

If you’re you ready for a trip to Valencia California’s Magic Mountain in 1977 then here is your ticket; it expires February 28, 1977 so you better use it soon. $7.50 seems like a good deal for all you can ride, no bothersome ticket books to worry about (or to collect years later). Globe Paper, ahhhhh…






This is a great 12 page postcard set from 1977. The front has a couple of Trolls and the Wizard, I sure do miss um.






The Revolution was just one year old here and a big hit as evidenced by two complete panels for the looping wonder.







Check out Magic Mountains many moving miracles… The Galaxy spinning thing from hell, the Metro Monorail (Bring back the Monorail!), and the Fabulous “Eagles Flight” skyway, hey, that’s right about were the newlyweds bucket fell off the cable!






The Magnificent Persian Fountain. Now it’s just a planter (link). A blog reader had asked if the sculpted reliefs are still present, I’m afraid they are not.







The Log Jammer is still a super flume ride, with an awesome last drop only surpassed when Splash Mountain was built. Be sure to ride this classic next time you are at the mountain.






The other water ride was not super. El Bumpo! It really was slow and boring and then there was that funky smell of the water and gas engines. The water may look blue in the postcard, but I was at the mountain many times in 1977 and it was not blue, it was a greenish/brown.







Swiss Twist, RIP 1971-2007






The Grand Prix, yes a complete unabashed Autopia rip off, but that’s not such a bad thing! The course was decent sized and the cars were fun and actually they were a lot less beat up than the Autopia cars. Nice shot of the Metro Monorail too, did I mention: BRING BACK THE MONORAIL!!! It’s all still there, the beam, the cars, all three stations, the right-of-way, the park needs a Monorail! Rant over.






Electric Rainbow. This ride is still at the park, it’s called something related to Batman now, but she still runs (and makes folks sick).






The mountain really was spectacular at night. It’s still nice, but not quite the same.







I hope you enjoyed this little trip to Magic Mountain in 1977. I’m hoping to visit the mountain sometime in early November; I’ll try some before and after shots from this set.

Today's Souvenir is a large (approx. 15” x 11”) puzzle of Frontierland. This is dated 1955 and the art work sure looks like 1955. I like how Casey Jr. ended up on the Frontierland puzzle.

Correction Day

This blog has been up for nearly a year and it finally happened, yup, I re-posted soemthing (queue the violin music here). Yesterday’s post included the cover to the Fall 1967 edition of Vacationland magazine to coincide with the October 15, 1967 ticket. It has come to my attention (that you Progressland) that I had already posted the entire issue back in July, as Homer Simpson would say “Doh”… Here's the link to the July post (link).

So to make up for me little transgression, Here is the cover of the Summer 1967 Vacationland and you will find the entire edition coming up on Bonus Sunday.

Eastern Star Night at Disneyland - October 15, 1967

Yes ladies and gentlemen the big night has finally arrived, it’s Eastern Star Night at Disneyland, October 15, 1967. Did you know “The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both women and men may belong. Worldwide, there are approximately 1 million members under the General Grand Chapter”

If you check out the web page of the Order of the Eastern Star (link) you’ll notice the logo has not only been updated, but it appears to be upside-down on this vintage ticket.






Since we are in the Fall of 1967, here the cover of the Fall 1967 edition of Vacationland. Boy oh boy if only we could step into this “New Tomorrowland”!

12th Annual Federal Employees Party at Disneyland

Here’s an interesting flyer for the 12th Annual Federal Employees Party at Disneyland. It’s for October 13th 1980 (this post is a day late, but never a dollar short).





This looks to be a proof sheet of some sort, I like the notation in the upper left “Castle in Star”, was that a comment to replace the ships and the Columbus Day reference with a Disneyland logo?

Disneyland Folk Festival October 10 & 11, 1981

It's time for a Folk Festival at Disneyland on October 10 & 11, 1981. Did you know: “The theme song for Gilligan's Island (music by George Wyle, lyrics by Sherwood Schwartz) was done in a folk-like character, and in fact is written in a traditional folk mode (modes are a type of musical scale); the mode of "Gilligan's Island" is ambiguous between Dorian and Aeolian. The lyrics begin with the traditional folk device in which the singer invites his hearers to listen to the tale that follows. Moreover, two of the stanzas repeat the final short line, a common device in English folk stanzas. However, the raising of the key by a semitone with each new verse is an unmistakable trait of commercial music and never occurred in the original folk tradition.”

So just sit right back and tell you a tale…







Since all I know about folk music is in the above paragraph I that copied from Wikipedia, I have no idea if these are “Folk” performers or not, but I would guess they are.






Small World Character Parade, I bet that looked weird. The park closes at 7pm on a Saturday night? Private party afterwards maybe?







From September 1980 and as a shout out to Mike over at “Jungle is 101” blog (link), here is a great “C” ticket. Mike just did a super post about the “C” ticket and “the pit” in New Orleans Square, be sure to check out his blog.






This “C” ticket was the last ticket in this book and yes I tore it out for this post. It made that wonderful “zip” sound that’s been bottled up for 28 years.






An insanely grand attraction lineup, you’ll find me on American Sings, Adventure thru Inner Space, then the PeopleMover, then I'd do them all again!






$8.50 seems like a great deal even in 1980, it is a $14.20 value you know!

Disneyland "Yesterday" Part 2

Following up on yesterday’s post, this is the more common “red” version of the flyer/brochure that was posted yesterday.

Also from 1959, the front and the inside are identical to yesterday's except for the colors.







The back is slightly different. Today’s “red” version does not list specific dates, but if you check the “blue” version, it does list a few dates in September. This “red” version must have been the basic summer flyer, with the “blue” version being used only near the end of the summer.

Disneyland "Yesterday" and "Today"

Today’s “Yesterday” Disneyland brochure appears to be from 1959 as it mentions the attractions in the “New Disneyland ‘59”.

Date Nite & Fantasy in the Sky, ah good times…

I was lucky enough to spend a few hours at Disneyland yesterday with Jason who runs the Disneyland Nomenclature Blog (link) and Dave, who is also a former cast member (Dave’s blog link) and Mike caught up with us later (not sure if Mike has a blog).

It’s great to be at Disneyland with other Disneyland enthusiasts, talk about seeing the park from a different perspective, wow! These guys know a LOT about the park, and Jason's “Disneyland Compendium/Encyclopedia” project is mind boggling and truly a masterpiece in the making.

Therefore, today’s “Today” brochure is actually from yesterday.





And of course the map. Oh, we toured the new “House of the Future” that’s inside of Inoventions, I’d like to report it was great, but, well, it was just lame.
