Yes, there was a Knott's Ghost Town street performer during the 1960s named "Whittles", long before that silly rubber headed character appeared in the mid-70s with the same name, which, as a matter of fact, was based on the original human "Whittles", portrayed perfectly by Walt Applebury. He had been working at Knott's since the 50s, riding his mule all over Main Street as a character referred to as "The Old Timer".

Wow, this obviously pre-dates the large "rubber head" costume of Whittles. I never knew there was actually a person that played Whittles!
