Bonus Sunday - Family Circle December 1957

****** Originally posted December 25, 2009 ******

Today we have a special Christmas Edition of Magazine Monday (on Sunday). From December 1957 it’s Family Circle Magazine. This issue features an amazing 12 page article “Especially for Children, a Christmas Story about St. Francis” as told by Mary Martin and Visualized by Walt Disney and staff.

The Little Lame Lamb, a story of Saint Frances of Assisi and the first Nativity Scene” is a wonderful Christmas season story, it’s worth taking the time to read it in its entirety. And as you’ll see, the artwork is top notch, wouldn’t it be amazing to own some of the originals?

Now presented in order, in high resolution and without further interruption, “The Little Lame Lamb”, enjoy.

Oh boy would I like to get this record! I bet the 12 page booklet has all the same artwork as this article just like Family Circle December 1958 and the “Christmas at Disneyland LP”. This must be a shorter story than Christmas at Disneyland as its all on one 45. If I had this record of course you’d be hearing here on the blog.

Before we get to some wonderful vintage holiday advertisements, Family Circle has a memo to its readers. Can you imagine it, they are raising the price of each issue to ten cents?

The ingredients of this fruit cake, minus the fruit, nuts and raisins, sound pretty good. No baking? Chill for two days? What kind of commie cake is this?

That Cookie House looks so yummy! Check out that cool Cookie Carnival Carousel!

“Paging Mr. Kidney, Mr. Kevin Kidney Please…”

Working together to bring people together” and working to keep our monopoly on the telephone industry.

Fruit Nog, Yummy?

Soft and smooth as linen”. Gotta love that Polka dot box!

These last three advertisements aren’t holiday related but I couldn’t resist sharing. Three of these sauces look excellent, I’ll let you guess which one I’ll pass on.

Some things never change (thank goodness). You’ll find a box or two of Lipton's Chicken Noodle Soup in my cupboard, how about yours? That glass soup pan on the electric burner looks so cool!

Well… This is a family magazine and its 1957 so this must be acceptable to show on my blog. “She dreamed she was lost in a London Fog”, maybe she was dreaming because she was being held and molded by her “talented bra… in the prettiest possible lines”… Was Maidenform a Division of Cadillac in 1957?

Fantasy on Parade - 1974 & 1976

******* Originally posted December 23, 2009 ********

It’s Holiday time at Disneyland, 1974 style. This flyer mentions the 19th Annual Fantasy on Parade, which would make this one year before Meet the Worlds “Gloria Gaynor at Disneyland – 1975” post from a couple of weeks ago. Nice grease stain, I say it adds charm and authenticity or its just gross.

No Gloria Gaynor in 1974, don’t worry, she will survive. But I’ll be making two trips to Holiday Time 1974, first to see one of my favorite musicians Jose Feliciano, and of course who would miss the DeFranco Family? it's interesting that they depicted both Parade Routes as two separate illustrations, in 1975 its just one illustration with a confusing “Point A - Point B” legend (link).

Here's a fun letter from Disneyland dated December 3, 1976.

How in the world did you get on this invite list? Unlimited use of all attractions, reserve seating for the Candlelight Ceremony & Fantasy on Parade! Even free parking was included. Notice the envelope is post marked December 13, 1976 and notice the recipient of this letter RSVP'd on the same day they received the letter!

Cool drawing on the ticket.

Arrive early for reserve seating.

Free parking too!

A Pair of Parade Tickets

****** Originally posted December 16, 2009 *******

Here's a couple of Christmas parade ticket's, one from "Fantasy on Parade" December 21, 1980 and one from the "Very Merry Christmas Parade" December 12, 1992. I like how the "arrive early" "reserve seating" wording is (almost) exactly the same 12 years later. How were these tickets issued and who got them?

The Wonderful World of Wizardry December 19??

******* Originally posted December 5, 2008 *******

Here’s an interesting two sided undated (boy that drives me crazy!) flyer. One side depicts an “Extra Special Holiday Attraction” presented by Mickey Mouse himself it’s “The Wonderful World of Wizardry”. A Google search doesn't find much, I’m not even sure what was all about, but what ever it was they did it 15 times daily!

The other side is all about the “Fantasy on Parade”. Although the condition of this flyer is excellent, its must be fairly old since the parade route goes into Indian Village which was taken out in 1971 to build Bear Country (Yesterland: Link).

A nice first year Fantasy on Parade photo from Gorilla Don’t Blog (post link).

In case you didn't know, Fantasy on Parade had it’s Gala Premiere on Saturday December 18, 1965 at 8:00pm, I have an original ticket to prove it, check back on the 18th of this month to see it.

Magic Kingdom Club 19th Birthday Party - December 11, 1976

****** Originally posted December 13, 2010 *******

At one time the Magic Kingdom Club used to celebrate its birthday, this ticket was for the 19th Birthday Party held on Saturday December 11, 1976. “Disneyland” is only printed once on this ticket and in pretty small letters. “Fasten Ticket Securely and Keep in Full View” its obvious yet I've never seen it on these types of tickets.

Here’s the cover to a souvenir photo from the event.

Little Josette looks happy to be at the Magic Kingdom. Hey, that little bench is the same one I sat on in 1970 (link).

Fun drawing on the mailing label.

Here’s Josette in 1974 with what I assume are her parents. Again she’s got her name on her shirt, I wonder if she wanted to be a Mouseketeer?

GLASS Family Nite at Disneyland - December 3, 1976

******* Originally posted December 3, 2008 *******

The night you've been waiting for has finally arrived; it’s Family Nite at Disneyland December 3, 1976. Sponsored by the GLASS “Greater Los Angeles Sunday School Assn.”  Wouldn't that be GLASSA? Oh well, close enough.

This ticket is odd in that it’s actually two tickets but only the stubs have perforations to separate the stubs from the main tickets, the two main tickets are just one big ticket.  Since these gave you unlimited use of all Disneyland attractions, did you have to stick together or tear this thing in half if you wanted to go alone? Or since this was a "Private Party" did you need this ticket at all once you were inside the park?

The back sure looks like it should be two separate tickets? How many people drive by themselves to Disneyland? Oh wait, I do that a lot!

This post needs some Christmas Color Cheer, here’s a great Whitman Frame-Tray Puzzle” from 1956. These are big (11 ½'” by 14 ½”) and made from heavy duty cardboard that’s remained in decent shape for being 52 years old, pretty amazing since this puzzle looks to have been used a few times.

Happy” looks like he ditched the rest of the dwarfs to be in this puzzle, is he riding one of Santa’s Reindeer on a pole? The artwork is so cute in this puzzle, everything is fun except Santa’s face is sort of scary, he looks like he is up to something and it’s not necessarily good…

Disneyland Employee Family Holiday Passes - 1981 vs. 1982

Welcome to the Holiday season here on the blog.  Yes its been almost two months since my last post, life has a way of, well, you know, getting in the way of fun stuff.  While I continue to regroup my vintage collection of goodies for 2013, I thought I'd rebroadcast some holiday favorites this month. If you've seen these posts before, just pretend they are new, if the are new to you then lets just say these are "new" posts.

******* Originally posted December 2, 2008 ********

It’s time to ring in some Holiday Cheer with a couple of fun Disneyland Employee Family Holiday Passes.

At first glance these two “Holiday Pass” cards look virtually the same, with the year and specific dates being the only change. In fact, I have several of these (1978, 79 & 80) and they are all basically the same.

The 1981 Pass is Reusable” and “Good daily from Dec. 2 thru Dec. 18, 1981

The 1982 pass is “Good for one visit only” and “Good from Dec. 1 thru Dec. 17, 1982". The reason for the change in 1982 was because the “lettered tickets” had been phased out earlier in the year in favor of the all for one Passport. The previous family passes were good for multiple visits because you had to buy attraction tickets to do the good stuff, so why not come back many times and spend more $$$.

By 1982 these Holiday Passes had a whole new value, since getting thru the gate was now the key to the Magic Kingdom and all the rides you can ride! Either way these passes are fun and a neat thing for Disney to do for its employees.

It's the holiday season
So whoop de doo and dickory dock
It's time to go and hang up your sock.

Magic Mountain Construction Photo's 1968 - Before and After - Part 3

As we continue with more 1968 Magic Mountain construction slides a huge thank you goes out again to Major over at Gorilla's Don't Blog for these amazing and rare images.

Of course I presented the easier to get "Before and After" shots in my first two posts, it gets murky from this point on.  What you're looking at here is the queue building and part of the lagoon for "El Bumpo" - Bumper Boats!

Since this attraction has been gone for decades, we'll have to make due with this vintage image showing El Bumpo in its prime. I see a lime green Metro Monorail out for a run too!

The next image has El Bumpo on the left, Casa de Regalos in the center and lots of monorail beam on the right.   I'd shout "Save the Metro" right about now, but its too late. The trains and the beams that ran thru the Log Jammer area have been removed as well as the Whitewater Lake Station. (Collective sigh here)

This section is *close* to the shot above, but its actually a little further up the bend.

Nice hood, looks like a 1968 Chevy truck? Down below is the Monorail beam, Casa de Regalos and the Grand Prix queue building.

This odd angle is impossible to get today.

The "Games Area" as shown on the 1971 map.

The "Games Area" is one of the area's of the park that has changed very little.

The Four Winds Metro Monorail station is IN the tunnel, the other side of the tunnel opens to the Log Jammer area as shown in part 2.  Nice mule on the beam!

Hike up the hill and you'll find the old beam.

The old Four Winds Station entrance.

The Four Winds Station/Tunnel.

This section was just past the Whitewater Lake Station, the restroom on the right is still there. That's the maintenance spur center left.

From November 2011 here's the maintenance spur, a year prior the trains were still on the track.

September 2012, no more beam.

Come back tomorrow (or soon) for part 4!

P.s. For Major, in response to your question "Is Gold Rusher still there?" I took this video September 26, 2012.
