A Musical Souvenir of "America on Parade"

Here’s something you don’t see and hear every day – A Musical Souvenir of “America on Parade” One of the famous Picture Disc’s of the ‘70’s. While these look really cool, the process to create the image and create a quality sounding LP seemed a tall order, this 1975 Picture Disc is a decent pressing. Looking closely at the artwork I can see how the big heads were supposed to appear - somehow they didn't quite come out as intended. Maybe George Romero altered the designs at the last minute?

Some fascinating details about the sound of Disneyland’s “America on Parade” extravaganza. The songs are “generally renowned” but are “noticeably new and different” as evidenced on Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah as you've never heard it - side 2.

The Great American Band Organ is the base upon which this music was built”. Most of the recording was done with an 1890 automatic band organ “Sadie Mae” with some Moog and other electronic effects mixed in. Hey, this parade used the same broadcast system as Disneyland’s Main Street Electrical Parade!

These picture discs sure look cool on the turn table.

Let’s watch it spin for a while; turn your head with the record to avoid dizziness.

The transfer from vinyl to digital was fair/good. It’s a bit scratchy even though the groves look clean and un-played. Beyond the scratches, there's just not a ton of fidelity, but I’m not sure there was a lot to begin with, this is primarily organ music to be played from moving floats!

You can listen to the entire album here:

If your having trouble playing the files or you just want to hear someone else's transfer, check out MouseVinyl.com's version here (link) - if you get lost in that site don't blame me.

Grad Nite - 1968

Time for some more Grad Nite goodness. All of today’s scans were donated by Randall, whom you’ll see later in this post - thanks Randall!. Grad Nite ’68 was the Eight Annual Grad Nite at Disneyland and a super bargain at $9.00! Did you hear Disneyland is raising its price to $80 for a one day one park ticket (link) “price increases were the result of a regular evaluation of rates” –in other words, just because they can…

No mini-skirts girls, sorry boys!

I posted the Grad Nite ’68 Program in 2009 here (link) which was itself donated my “Stuff from the Park”. Here’s the “Gate Flyer” that lists all the Grad Nite Photo Locations, note the circled location.

Mega entertainment! Bill Elliott and the Disneyland Date Niters! OK, I’m going to jump ahead to a post coming this Saturday and share Side 1 of LP “Date Nite at Disneyland – The Date Niters and the Elliott Bros. Orchestra” This is from an “Argentina” pressing and while a bit scratchy, but after the first few minutes it really starts to rock with some nice High Fidelity! Come back Saturday for Side 2.

Side 1 (link) 14mb – wma format. Crank it up and "Lets Dance!"

"Ann and Randy. Last names withheld to protect the innocent from further embarrassment." Taken from the “New Orleans Square Riverbank (#7)” – cool jacket Randy!

This list of High Schools from the program is different than my previous post, is your High School on here?

A Huge thanks goes out to Randall for sharing his special Grad Nite goodies with us!

Angels Disneyland Fun Day - June 13, 1971

This "Angels Disneyland Fun Day" ticket can't possibly be FORTY years old, yet June 13, 1971 would appear to be forty years ago today.

The back of the ticket lets us know this was a "Special Angels-Disneyland Double-Header Party" do you suppose it also included a ticket to an Angels game?

Grad Nite - 1975

It’s Grad Nite at Disneyland June 11, 1975. Make sure and check out the program from Grad Nite ’75 on my previous post here (link).

The usual rules will “help to maintain the Gran Nite Party atmosphere”.

From the Fall-Winter of 1975, here’s Vacationland magazine with America on Parade on the Cover.

The more I see this of this Parade the more I like it. This appears to be the first version, man I love that giant sandwich and 20 foot tall turkey! The blog has a very special “America on Parade” post coming soon, I won’t give it away but it involves a round picture.

This issue has some great Disneyland articles, here’s the first page from a few of them.

The Metro Monorail back when she was one of the stars of mountain.

Come back on Bonus Sunday for the entire issue.

Grad Nite - 1969

Is everyone ready for some Disneyland Grad Nite fun? If you have’t seen enough Grad Nite stuff today (or by the end of June) check out my previous (30?!?!) Grad Nite posts here (link). Jumping a little ahead on the date, this Disneyland Grad Nite ticket is from June 19, 1969. Were disembodied heads really necessary? Oh well, they don’t detract from awesome star-twinkle things and that cool row of Castle Logo’s under the heads.

According to Grad Nite Committee Rules” Is that the High school’s committee of Disneyland’s committee? For goodness sake – “Hold your own ticket”, don’t trust your date!

Bring this card with you (hold your own card?) “Only two people in any one picture” I think I’ll leave that alone.

Wow, neato graphics on the reverse side. How fun to get this in the mail a couple of weeks later with your Grad Nite photograph.

Family Circle - June 1965

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today’s magazine is pushing the “Disneyland Related Article” requirement but its got some great vintage advertisements to make up for it. From June 1965 is Family Circle Magazine. Cozy if not a bit green family room.

The one Disneyland photo is part of a six page “Travel Beauty Aids you can use at Home” article. At least it’s a nice photo, but something looks odd with the Carrousel?

Here’s the six page article, 46 years ago and many worlds away.

“How to get more mileage out of Daddy” is a funny article that treats dad like the family car! Let me know if anyone wants to ready the rest and I’ll post it on Bonus Sunday.

"Glamorous gifts for the Bride’s Kitchen". Those are some sharp looking appliances.

Now for some great vintage advertisements. Up first Whirlpool wants you to see what’s inside their stylish refrigerator.

Broyhill Furniture – where’s Monty Hall and Carol Marol.

This is what I had for dinner last night – OK its was KC Masterpiece barbecue sauce, but I did grill hamburgers just like those, yum!

Tropical Mist Cake actually sounds pretty good!

Two cartons are better than one!

“I can’t get you a Tab, you haven’t ordered anything yet”.

Wow, what a great look!

Hank and Red visit Disneyland - Part 2

"Red" is now inside the park, 6:00pm sharp and it appears the park isn't very crowded. I'm guessing the posters are on each side so "Hank" totally blew it by centering Red in this shot!

I suppose that's Skull Rock behind Red - Hank must not have known the flash bulb only goes so far.

Hank looks rather serious in this photo - slick gold belt!. I like the evening skyline and the Skyway silhouette in the background. Too bad we only got half that sign on the right, whats is talking about?

In this last photo taken at the Carnation Plaza Red sure seems happy still. Hey I like the pattern of that shirt on the lady next to Red, I'm gonna guess 1963 as the date for these.
