Queen Mary Stuff

Today’s post is a shameless piggy-back to Major’s excellent Queen Mary post from yesterday (link). I’ve had these Queen Mary paper goodies sitting in my “to post” bin for months just waiting for the right time and now here it is.

First up a flyer from 1979 explaining what the tours and the Queen had to offer. I notice no mention of the Helicopter rides that were once offered from the parking lot (my one and ONLY helicopter ride in 1977) maybe it had already crashed at this point?

$3.75
seems fair enough for January 7, 1979.

Here’s one of those “postcard packs” I believe it’s from 1978. Is the propeller room gone? I’m glad to hear the “Queen Mary Plaza Tour Approach Complex" has been removed, man that thing was ugly.

Alpine Guides Climb the Matterhorn - Press Photo

Here's a familiar photo! Its those wacky Alpine Guides climbing Disneyland's Matterhorn. This photo is almost identical to the cover photo of the 1963 Vacationland from Sundays post (link) and was probably taken just moments apart.

Looks like this press photo was to promote the Disneyland Around the Seasons episode of The Wonderful World of Color that would be broadcast just three days after Walt's passing.

L.A. Times Midwinter Magazine - January 2, 1957

Welcome to Magazine Monday. From January 2, 1957 it’s the Los Angeles Time Midwinter Magazine. This larger format magazine (10” by 13”) is all about Los Angeles and how wonderful it used to be to live here. The watercolor on the cover is by Rex Brandt (link) and is a “beach scene at Balboa depicting a typical Sunday in Southern California”.

This is a great magazine that really captures Southern California as it entered 1957. Unfortunately the Disneyland article is only one page long. At least it’s a nice picture of the castle.

Jumping ahead to the advertisement pages we find a little more Disneyland in this magazine!

The next 18 scans have nothing to do with Disneyland but they do embody the idealism of American life in the 1950’s that Disneyland was born from and into. Go ahead and sit back, the time machine is set for January 1957 and first up are a few pages from Hollywood USA!

It’s January 2nd and the Star of the year has already been chosen, nice choice!

Jack Warner is reminding you of some of his handy work. Giant was filmed in WarnerColor.

My mom used to tell me how when she was a kid she would go to Hollywood and listen to records before buying them, looks like it was the in thing to do.

If you're into vintage TV you’ll love this four page article that reflects on the giant TV has become in just ten years.

Desilu’s influence was giant as well.

I wonder what set Lucy in on. ABC-TV’s Wyatt Earp was filmed in Chatsworth, hey that’s near my house!

The caption for this slightly blurry photo reads “Gleaming new Chevrolets pour from the assembly line of General Motors Van Nuys plant. California automobile production is second only to Detroit.

Mammoth Lakes actually looks just like this vintage photograph. That map on the right looks very much like the early Vacationland magazine back cover maps (link).

Check out this concept art of a Jet Age airport in Los Angeles; think they’ll ever build it?

Now for some vintage advertisements. Ammunition and Fireworks all in one, sign me up! Great phone number there in Newhall.

This jet powered Snark gets a burst of speed from two rocket boosters and is one deadly weapon.

Wouldn’t you like to buy a couple of these at 1957 prices?

After scanning this you have no idea how bad I want an ice cold Orange Julius, I bet they're not 10¢ anymore.

TWA’s Super-G Constellations were pretty fast for non-jets (link) and they looked cool too.

A future Disneyland sponsor.

The Jungle book article has a cool wide angle shot.

Nice color centerfold.

Magic Kingdom Club Membership Card - 1963

Taking yet another look at Disneyland’s Magic Kingdom Club today we’ve got a membership card from 1963. This club card was issued to Eileen Wakefield (what an awesome signature!) and apparently she worked for Trans-World Airlines. I guess TWA still got Magic Kingdom Club membership status even though they had just recently dropped sponsorship of the Rocket to the Moon Ride.

The usual “let them eat cake” disclaimers on the back. Interestingly, some Club memberships expire at the end of the year and some (like this one) expire right before summer starts.

How about a vintage Vacationland Magazine to go with the 1963 Magic Kingdom Club membership card? This cover photo on the Winter-Spring 1963 Vacationland is so familiar that I could swear I’ve posted this issue before, but I don’t think I have, at least I can’t find it anywhere on this blog.

They thought this show was already an old timer, I think it’s got a few more years to go!

Next year being the 50th anniversary of The Swiss Family Tree House attraction wouldn’t it be amazing if they evicted Tarzan (do kids even know who that guy is?) and moved the Robinsons’ back in??? Let Kevin Kidney coordinate the restoration and it will be perfect! The article mentions a Swiss Flag at the attraction, I know someone who "acquired" one of those flags directly from the tree house, maybe they would donate it back if gets restored.

Great wall map, the cast members are a bit creepy however.

Viewmaster’s and Disneyland were really hitting their stride by 1963. That’s a neat castle drawing, a bit of a Monet influence?

New York World's Fair 1964-1965 Special Events Ticket

The 1964-65 New York World's Fair looks so amazing in all the great vintage slides, I sure wish I could have seen it in person. If someone ever gets that time machine working I've got a few of these Special Events Tickets to get us through Pass Gates for free.

These tickets are about the size of playing cards (except for the notches at the bottom) in fact they feel like cards without the coating. Check out the mini Unispheres as the safety pattern!

The Santa Fe Magazine - August 1955

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today we’re going back to where and when it all started with the debut of Disneyland as chronicled in this August 1955 Issue of The Santa Fe Magazine. Walt’s smile is so infectious even old Mr. Gurley is grinning like a little boy.

There’s a lot of industry insider stuff in here, if any of you railroad buffs are
interested in any of these articles just let me know.

This five page Disneyland article is one of the better “day one” articles. This is back when it was still very fresh on everyone’s mind. Of course the focus of the article is on “Santa Fe”, but hey, the train was and still is the focal point of the entrance. There’s lots of standard stuff in the text, but some fun details too.

The photos on these last two pages are outstanding.

An excellent article about a boys ranch in Amarillo Texas where “maverick and delinquent youngsters farm and ranch 3,000 acres and go to school…” The boys also took a trip to Disneyland, all 200 of them!

For the accountant’s out there.

As with these industry magazines there really aren’t many advertisements and they are mostly “business to business” (boring) - This one however caught my eye, fun art work.

Is the back cover trying to tell us something?
