The Coca-Cola Bottler - October 1965

Welcome to Magazine Monday. From the “this just in” department we’ve got a fun look at Coca-Cola and Disneyland. From October 1965 it’s The Coca-Cola Bottler magazine. I guess you’d call this a “trade” magazine, it certainly was not for the general public.

Diana sure is pretty, a true 1960’s California girl. That nice big “First Fabulous Decade” logo is fabulous isn’t it? For all you “opening day conspiracy theorists" please note; And it was on July 18, 1955, that Walt Disney promised the opening day crowd “Disneyland will continue to grow as long as…” I thought Walt said that on July 17th?

The Coca-Cola Suits visit Disneyland!

Ok, what’s wrong with this picture? This is a great magazine, but between the July 18th flub and this goof they have lost all creditability. Even when corrected (link) its still an odd angle that I don’t think you can get today.

Are you ready for some vintage advertisements? I hope you like Coke, because that's really all this magazine is, one big ad for Coke and its related vendor products.

This colorful Du Pont sure looks refreshing. “Give me a Tab. A Tab? I can't give you a tab unless you order something”.

Westinghouse introduces its Special Location Stack-Type Automatics and blue dress lady looks thrilled.

We’re really getting into Dispenserland now. These fountain heads are worth a small fortune today; I’d love one on my kitchen counter (working of course).

Beautiful artwork on this Cornelius Company ad. These machines aren’t coin operated but man do they look super cool.

Cavalier made Coke machines in all types of shapes and sizes.

Beverage-Air made these interesting coolers. Although I was born in 1965, these are alien to me. When I was a little kid I don’t recall seeing these in “homes, offices & waiting rooms”.

The back of the magazine features, what else, a Coke ad! I don’t know about you, but I have a serious craving for an ice cold Coke because “things go better with Coke”.

Bonus Sunday

Welcome to Bonus Sunday. From the “better late than never” here is the complete Fall 1966 edition of Vacationland as promised in a post from a few weeks ago (link).

Vacationland Fall 1966 – 84mb

Vaudeville in the Magic Kingdom.

Super colorful centerfold in all its 1966 glory.

From a great multi page article (starting on page 14) titled “Shopping at Disneyland” here are some of those fantastic oversized cards like the ones shown in yesterday’s post. To answer KatellaGate’s question, yes, I do recall the huge decks of cards being all the rage in the late 60’s / early 70’s. For some reason they also remind me of Hobo Kelly’s huge glasses!

Unusual and Bizarre pipes” Here in Southern California they have a different name for those kind of pipes… Did they really sell these at Disneyland??? And I thought the Wizard of Bra’s was unusual.

Oh man I am really getting excited about next weeks Knott’s event on April 18th! I hope to see you there!

Souvenir Saturday Magic Mountain Playing Cards

Welcome to Souvenir Saturday. Today we’ve got a couple of souvenir playing cards from the early days of Magic Mountain. Unfortunately, while both decks do feature great photos, each deck simply repeats the photo 54 times!

Up first from the mid 1970’s this deck has a great photo of the Jet Stream back when they used to race down the last drop. The double chutes are still there, but the right side has been closed for years. The one on the right looks pasted in doesn't it?

The other set of cards must be from the opening year 1971 or very soon after. These cards feature the original Magic Mountain logo (which is my favorite!) and some great early vintage photos; do I see blue and green Metro Monorails? SAVE THE MONORAIL!!!!

The 1971 deck of cards is HUGE! I feel like the host of Card Sharks when I play with these big dudes! I’ve always had an odd fondness for these typer of oversized cards, maybe I better consult Freud.

The box for the large cards still has part of its original price tag, too bad we can’t see the price! Made in Japan????

Disneyland on August 20, 1958

Following up on last months post “Disneyland on August 29, 1957” (link), here is another Disneyland gate flyer and personal expenditure notes from a day at Disneyland on August 20, 1958.

Up first the gate flyer, similar to the 1957 flyer however the Scottish Dumbo is no longer on the cover.

Only a 25¢ increase from the summer of 1957.

Effective September 15th, Disneyland is closed Monday & Tuesday.

These little notes sure are fun. Interestingly, it appears they purchased two general admission tickets (total of $2.50) and then bought individual attraction tickets. Not that I did the math, but it seems to me they would have gotten a better deal with the Big Ten ticket book! Candy 21¢!!! Film 52¢, I wonder if it was slide film?

M’ for morning and “E” for even, talk about details!

Indiana Jones Adventure - Boarding Pass

From 1995 here’s your Boarding Pass for the new Indiana Jones Adventure attraction in Adventureland.

I like the THX-1138 references, how many average Disneyland guests even know what that represents?

Too bad this passport doesn’t have its stamp. I wonder if it’s the same stamp as this ticket (link).

Details from the web: "This unique bording bass is designed to look like a passport and was produced by the Walt Disney Company and Lucas Film LTD. Inside when you open the passport you will see the date of March 1995, place of birth date of March 1935, a thumb print and the issue number of 1138. On the other inside page you have a visa entry stamp space, and the following: The team leader of the Mara expedition by requests all whom it may concern to permit the guest named in to pass without delay or hindrance and in case of need to give all lawful aid or protection. Present to a site archaeologist a the Temple Of The forbidden Eye Adventureland For one entry into the Indiana Jones Adventure. By the way if you translate the first group of symbals at the top of our item they translate to the word Passport. This very cool item was only handed out to the press and dignitaries for use on the opeing day of the ride."

"Let's Twist Again!"

Are you ready to Twist Again? On March 31, 1989 the "Largest Twist Party" record was set at Disneyland with Chubby Checker and 2,248 of his friends.

You make recall seeing the above photo previously on the somewhat dormant, but always excellent blog “Westcot2000” (link). In case you wanted some more information here’s a few pages for us detail freaks.

A day at Disneyland - March 1967

From March 1967 here's a few fun snaps shots. First up in front of Main Street Station we’ve got the Big Bad Wolf and his omnipresent swaggering tongue, one of the Three Little Pigs and a few attraction posters.

So much for getting the whole castle in the frame, oh well, its still a nice shot. Anyone else miss the ivy growing on the castle walls?

In this wonderfully blurry shot of the Matterhorn you can just make out two sets of construction walls to the right, they must be working on the new Tomorrowland ’67!

And the obligatory Pirate Ship photo.

As a bonus, this set of vintage photographs came with these two pictures from the New York Worlds Fair, they are both dated 1965 on the back.

Disneyland Passport - April 5, 1982

A quick post today, from April 5, 1982 (that's 28 years ago today for the mathematically challenged) here's a Disneyland Adult Passport.

Disneyland Easter Party 1984 - Everybody Wins!

From 1984, how about a Easter Party party at Disneyland where Everybody Wins! This sounds a little complicated; scratch here, find your meadow number, present this card, choose an egg, look inside for a game piece (why isn't this the game piece?) Oh, I guess it's an Easter Egg Hunt! Thumper sure looks cool!

Lots of fine print. Interesting odds... I would be hoping for the Large Sunkist Orange Juice!
