Welcome to Bonus Sunday. On Wednesday’s post (link) we took a look at the Disney News Magazine which had a great article on Space Mountain. The only problem was the article had black & white photographs. It just so happens the Fall-Winter 1977-78 edition of Vacationland has the same article but in color. And well, honestly, the Vacationland issue is much better than the Disney News anyway.

Here is the complete Fall-Winter 1977-78 issue of Vacationland; it’s a large issue at 30 pages. Why in the world did they remove the escalator?

This looks much better in color. I miss the Space Place; I’ll trade Red Rockets for it.






Here’s a close up of the original Starcade. I love those murals! The orange floor tiles were still there a couple weeks ago (link) , let’s hope they’re still there.






These Vacationlands really showcased all of the other attractions Southern California had to offer.

Family Fun Night at Disneyland - Feb. 5, 1972

Set your time machine back exactly 38 years ago today to celebrate Family Fun Night at Disneyland February 5, 1972. The Private Party is from 8:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and is sponsored by NVJCC - I wonder if that’s the North Valley Jewish Community Center that’s near my house?






Free parking and no mention of a refund for crummy weather.






In the “unrelated” department I’ve got some exciting news, almost as exciting as when the new phone books arrive, almost. Wikipedia has a decent page (link) on the “E-ticket”, I tried to submit a better scan of an E-ticket a couple years ago, but they never accepted it. They still have a so-so scan of an E-ticket, BUT……






If you scroll down the page (link) to the External links section, the link “Archive of even more park coupons” is my blog! If they wouldn’t take my scan at least they linked me, and with Yesterland and Keeline, I’m in good company indeed!

Star Tours "Fact Card"

Here’s a fun little “fact card” about Star Tours. I’ve got several of these little cards; they must have been for cast members to learn about the attractions.





Some interesting “facts” on this side of the card, I would dispute the Grand Opening date of January 9, 1986 however, I don't think they build this attraction in three months. The Audio/Video system was Videodisc based, do you think it still is. If it is, who do I beg/bribe to get one of the Videodiscs when they update Star Tours?






Wow, lot’s of information on the inside. Impressive celebrity list, could a new attraction get this kind of reception today?






This “glow in the dark decal” is technically a sticker, but boy is it cool. It still glows nicely. It’s made of some weird space-age foil material; in fact, the area outside the stickers is even cooler than the sticker itself.






Since I’m feeling guilty for never having seen Pete’s Dragon, here's some love for the silly old dragon.

“Nite of Joy” at Disneyland - February 3, 1978.

Set your time machine back exactly 32 years and you too can enjoy a “Nite of Joy” at Disneyland February 3, 1978. According to Disney’s Youth Programs website (link) the current “Night of Joy” event celebrates rock, pop and gospel Contemporary Christian music. I wonder if this includes Christian crunkcore (link).






Free parking. How come there is no “Alcoholic beverages not allowed” warning like on the Grad Nite tickets?






This cover to the Disney News Magazine Winter 1977/78 is rather dizzy looking.






Wow check out the College Musicians, nice outfits!






A great three page article about “our” Space Mountain.






How about when EO is done with his run, tear the roof of the theater and return it to this?






Bad Disney fan alert – I’ve never seen Pete’s Dragon. For some reason it always reminded me of Pipi Longstocking and this photo only reinforces that fear.

Disneyland's 55th Ticket Book Souvenir

As first seen on TokyoMagic’s great blog (link) Disneyland has produced a “Vintage Ticket Book and Memo Pad” for the 55th anniversary celebration. These are selling out quick at only $5, it’s a virtual bargain at the park. I was so excited when I got mine that I torn the package!






The top cover of the book isn’t exactly vintage, but I like it.






Here are the tickets. Not real globe paper, but for $5 what do you expect. The colors are close but not quite right. The attractions are fairly close to the correct letter designation. Since attractions moved their “letter” over the years - the only thing that sticks out to me is the Storybook Land Canal Boats on the “D” ticket while the rest of Fantasyland is on the “C” ticket. Overall a nice job for a cheap souvenir.






These aren’t real tickets? As you can see on the back, these are just memo pads! There appears to be about ten of each letter. I'm going to try and get a few more on my next visit.

Walt Disney's Magazine - June 1957

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Looking back to June 1957 today’s we’ve got Walt Disney’s Magazine (formerly Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club Magazine). If you missed any of my previous Walt Disney Magazine posts, be sure and check them all out here (link).






Disneyland gets just a brief mention in this issue, but it's still fun. Some of Paul Hartley’s amazing illustrating talent on display. Fascinating history of the Carrousel. Nice shots of Disneyland’s Carrousel in action, great 10¢ admission sign! “The scene around the carrousel is gay as a medieval fair”.






Another superb illustration, this one is by Jacques Rupp who designed the Disneyland logo (link).






Paul Hartley again, simple yet so effective.






This artist is not credited but it does look like Jacques Rupp’s style. It also looks like the Rainbow Desert!






Here’s the only two advertisements in the magazine. Mickey Mouse Shoes and Mouseketeer Round-up (Woody’s?) boots.






Krazy Ikes, I remember getting these used at rummage sales when I was a little kid. The connectors were always either broken or worn out. Hey, wasn’t “Ike” the president of the United States in 1957?
