Passports to Disneyland - Spring 1977

This article from the Spring 1977 edition of the Disney News explains the new “Exclusive” Passport to Disneyland (available only to Magic Kingdom Club Members). The article refers to some vintage passports that were “brightly colored wrist ribbons” has anyone ever seen one of those?

Here are two unused passports from the first run in 1977, just think of those unrealized happy memories. These Passports were only good until May 31, 1977, so forget about using them in the busy summer months and you’ve only got 4 days to use them for the new Space Mountain.

The basic disclaimers are on the back. What if you have nowhere to tie the little string?

The 1977 passports are HUGE! As you can see here by 1978 they got the passport down to a more reasonable size. And they added a little brass grommet to prevent the string from tearing loose; I wonder how many complaints City Hall got with the first tickets “All I have left is this stupid sting!

The cover to the Spring 1977 edition of the Disney News.

On page 18 you’ll find the prices for Disneyland and fun note about the up coming Space Mountain – is that Space Mountain font great or what?

A nice two page article about the La Boutique d’Or in New Orleans Square. Is this shop still there? With 35+ visits to Disneyland in the past 2 years you’d think I would know this!!

Artificial snow at Disneyland, like that’ll ever happen!

Possibly more than you ever wanted to know about the Disneyland Band.

Ooo-la-la” Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, I remember waiting in line to see this in a theater that had only one screen, do they still have those?

A Country Bear Christmas - November 23/24, 1984

It's A Country Bear Christmas November 23 & 24 1984. For the first year of the new Country Bear Christmas, they are featured on the cover of this flyer, but there is no mention of the bears anywhere in the flyer???

See a great L.A. Times ad for the same weekend in 1984 over at Meet the World (link). What's up with Matthew Wilder's hair??

Ford Times - may 1962

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today we’ve got a second look at the Ford Times magazine. We first saw this “little” magazine with its September 1960 issue posted back in February (link). Today’s issue of the Ford Times is from May 1962. I hope you are ready to see 1962 through watercolors. The great cover painting is by Rex Brandt and shows the San Diego Harbor.

The inside cover has this beautiful watercolor painting by Millard Sheets.

This issue's Disneyland article is fairly short, but certainly a reflection of the times. “What Khrushchev Missed in Disneyland”. The article steers clear of exactly why Khrushchev missed going other than to blame “authorities” who were worried about his security.

Kyra Petrovskaya (say that five times fast) tells about what Khrushchev would have seen from her Russian perspective. Turns out she and many other Russians are Tom Sawyer fans, I guess that’s why we get these excellent paintings of Tom’s Island by Ralph Hulett.

Some interesting observations about more adults than children. Possible political correctness violation where she describes the various types of the guests at Disneyland, again I suppose it was a sign of the times.

No advertisements in the Ford Times but there are a few more spectatular articles with more amazing art work. This 5 page article is about smart porpoises and Marineland!

The paintings (and sketches) by James Warren really pickup the vibe of early Marineland.

Flipper singing in a bow-tie!

More Marineland goodness on the inside of the back cover. I can’t find anything about James Warren on the internet, too bad, I really like his style.

Knott’s Berry Farm didn’t want to get left out, here’s the secret recepe for Mrs. Knott’s Old-Fashion Pioneer Beef Stew. For you seafood folks, try the Fish Ka-bob with Caper Sauce from the Sea Shanty.

Red Skelton, Danny Kaye, Marlene Dietrich – you know “There’s a lot to Las Vegas”.

Frank Sinatra and Edie Adams, did things that happened in Vegas stay in Vegas back in 1962?

This post has been brought to you by me and is compliments of Read Mullan Motor Company, Phoenix 14, Arizona.

Bonus Sunday - It's New and It's Now

Welcome to Bonus Sunday. Be sure to check out my Trip Report blog when you're done here, no new trip report, but a new post with a fun look at the Disneyland “Backstage Pass” Magazine.

Trip Report Blog - Disneyland “Backstage Pass”

This newspaper supplement is from 1972 and is all about the new land and new attraction at Disneyland.

This large supplement has aged rather well, not much fading at all. They appeared to have used some serious ink on this thing; it feels like it was just printed yesterday!

The Main Street Electrical Parade was pretty new too, I always like the early art work for MSEP.

A whole new “Day after Dark” at Disneyland. Check out that entertainment line up, Buddy Rich! Harry James!! Disneyland doesn’t have anything like this anymore, why not?

The whole supplement opens up to this BIG weird map of the park. This is like where’s Waldo on steroids! I had to stitch together 4 scans, and as usual it came out “OK”

Videopolis Passport Coupon

This was supposed to be posted back in June but got lost somehow among my other posts, so pretend its June.

From 1985, the New Videopolis offered a Summer Passport for $40! Yes, that's right, you can visit Disneyland "night after night, anytime after 5pm, all summer long*" *June 22 thru September 7. This coupon for $5 off was given out on one of the Grad Nites, I'm guessing the Summer Passport was available to the public also.

Isn't that ID card great, love that '80's hair! Does anyone have one of these, if so we'd like to see it.

Souvenir Thursday & a new Trip Report blog

Today is Modern souvenir day here on the blog. Before we get started with the souvenir, please take note that I have created a new blog to off-load my trip reports. Having recently tried to show my blog to someone only to have it hang there while loading 40+ photos, I decided to move the trip reports to their own blog. It’s sort of a sub-blog to this one. Please be sure and visit the new blog as there is a brand new post today. I’ll still let you know about the trip reports here with a photo and a link.

Disneyland Trip Reports Blog – November 17, 2009

On my trip to the park on Tuesday I actually bought myself a souvenir and not just a $5 antenna ball! The photo below is from a visit to the park in October when I spotted this Silver “E” ticket. At the time I didn’t have an extra $75 for this unexpected find.

Well I saved my pennies and bought myself a Silver E-Ticket! It’s pretty cool & heavy. This is correct for a 1960 “E” ticket. Note I got #149 of 1,955 produced.

The Silver “E” ticket comes in this fancy velvet box from the “Art of Disney Theme Parks”.

Also included is this replica 1960 ticket book minus the “E” ticket of course. While the attractions are correct, you could argue that the “B” ticket is missing the Midget Autopia and the “D” ticket is missing Storybook Land and the Columbia, but they're close enough. The paper is all wrong however, I believe this is the same replica book that came with a Gold “E” ticket a few years back. Either way, it’s not even close to the excellent 1959 Replica Ticket book from two years ago (link).

$75 is a bit step for a silver plated ticket, but as luck would have it the good folks at Disneyland upped the premium AP discount to 20% for the Holiday’s!

My Certificate of Verification. Who would try and forge one of these anyway?

The velvet box also comes inside of another box emblazoned with this logo.

André Tahon - R.I.P.

André Tahon - R.I.P.

Imagine my surprise when I received an email from a puppet. Not just any puppet but from the Great Papotin himself.

However, Papotin was bearing some very sad news… His “Daddy” André Tahon passed away in August of this year.

These are images from a .pdf file Papotin sent me. You can download the original file here (link).

As a tribute to André and his grand puppets, here’s a replay of my post from last July.

Two Wonderful Ways to Enjoy Disneyland” from the Summer of 1963.

I’ve never noticed the guided tours being called a “Happiness Trip” before, I bet they dropped that pretty quick.

Do you think Disneyland is open every day in the summer?

Don’t miss this “Unique Special Attraction – Direct from Paris” its Andre Tahon and “Papotin’s Revue”. This show ran only for a few months in 1963, but still managed over 500 shows! Please “Present an ‘E’ Coupon from your ticket book”…

Here’s the aforementioned “E” ticket from June 1963.

Mr. Tahon himself, he looks better than his drawing above. Check out this blog (link) for tons of information on Andre.

And from Jed’s somewhat dormant but still excellent blog, here are two rare promotional items from these two posts on his blog "Vintage Disneyland Goodies". (link) and (link). Be sure and read the comments on those posts, lots of great information.
