Disneyland Today - October 22 thru 26, 1990

Welcome to Disneyland Today for October 22 thru 28, 1990. That four story tall Party Gras Parade balloon looks like Sonic the Hedge Hog?

The Disneyland Hotel with its old windows that opened, the new widows do look pretty cool. Ask for your change in Fun Money!

Once again the park is open from 10am to 6pm Monday thru Friday, just one week before Halloween – Can you image that today? Disney Afternoon on KCAL-9, I used to watch that!

Looks like the Party Gras is winding down as the party ends November 11th.

Here’s some valuable information for you –Part of Disneyland’s charm was that parking lot, they should have left it alone.

A Magic Kingdom Club one day passport for October 25th, 1990. Nice even serial number…

$23.50 was two dollars off the “regular” price, those Magic Kingdom Club Members get all the special deals.

The parking tickets have the neat Disneyland font and logo.

This appears to be an unused Mickey balloon from 1990, it still feels new but I didn’t inflate it, don’t want Mickey’s head exploding.

Fun little stringed tag for stroller/wheelchair rentals.

Also included for your stay at Disneyland in October 1990 is this flyer where Disneyland Park salutes the Festival of Britain at the South Coast Plaza?

The back side is a plug for the Disney’s once wanted and then discarded Queen Mary / Spruce Goose attraction. The mouse can be fickle sometimes.

Looking towards tomorrows Trip Report post, here’s the current map & flyer to compare with the 1990 version.

The flyer insert has changed its style with a slight update, I like it.

Date Nite at Disneyland 1967 - Part 2

Let’s take a second look at Disneyland’s “Date Nite” tickets; our first look was way back in January 2008 (link). Back then I only had one lonely faded Date Nite “A” ticket, since then I’ve acquired a few more. These are also from May 1967.

Progressland over at Disneyland Nomenclature explained this vintage annual event best: “Date Nites began in 1957 and might have happened every year into the 1970s. Some of the early Disneyland newspaper advertisements just seem bizarre, like a Date Nite one from 1958 that's all text and is headlined "6 STEPS TO BECOME A BMOD* *Big Man On Dates." The focus seems to be on dancing and live music... By September 1958 they were claiming more than a half-million people had already become "Date Niters." It was held on Friday and Saturday nights, or sometimes just Saturday nights. I don't believe it was year-round, though I have seen advertisements for it outside of the summer season.

You gotta down load this song (link - save file) it’s the Elliott Brothers with “Let’s Dance at Disneyland” from the 1956 Album Date Nite at Disneyland. What a fantastic song! "Take your date to Disneyland, where open 'till the clock strikes 1 AM!" Hey, is that Walt doing the introduction???

I’d sure like to get a Date Nite admission ticket and the “D” & “E” tickets, these seem fairly rare which makes sense that those would be the first to be used. I do like the blue ink in place of the usual purple (link). Notice how the welcome message was reworded to include “Date Nite”.

Now for the tickets, these tickets are on the rare Castle and Star paper produced in 1966 & 1967 only. Other than the Castle & Star paper, these are standard tickets with a special “N” serial number prefix (date Nite?) and of course the happy couple dancing the night away. Paging Darrin and Samantha Stephens.

Vivid and crisp are the best way to describe these tickets. There condition is amazing for being 42 years old, especially considering these were never intended to last four decades? I’ll use this “B” ticket on the Keel Boat next year.

Some great dark rides!

How about a Summer 1967 guide book to go with your Date Nite tickets?

New Orleans Square is pretty new here, no Haunted Mansion yet.

A brand new Tomorrowland, so new it wasn’t ready for pictures before these guides went to print. Also notice this is the only guide which lists Monsanto’s “Magic Microscope”. Also the Tomorrowland Terrace is referenced as “Coca-Cola Refreshment GardensTomorrowland Terrace has a much better ring to it.

Here is the Tomorrowland section from the back pages of the guide listed under free shows and entertainment. Notice here the name is correctly listed as “Monsanto’s Adventure thru Inner Space”. Also note: this is the only guide which lists BOTH of Monsanto’s attractions, Adventure Thru Inner Space and the House of the Future.

Come back on Bonus Sunday for the entire Summer 1967 Guide.

A day at the park

No new post today, I'm off to the park again! There's a free Mickey Mouse antenna ball for anyone who can tell me where this Mickey Mouse animation cell came from... (I added the purple background)

Newsweek Magazine - December 31, 1962

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today’s we’ve got a fun look at Walt Disney and his many simultaneous projects as he headed into 1963. From December 31, 1962 its Newsweek Magazine with a business feature story “The World of Walt Disney”.

This four page article does a good job of summarizing all the “things” Walt was involved in. An “Eastern Disneyland in Florida”? Nah, that’ll never happen. I like Walt’s quote regarding the upcoming opening of the Tiki Room “I’m not in any hurry to open the room”. Robots in the Haunted Mansion; “Ogres, elves and transparent ghosts”.

TokyoMagic, take special note of Walt’s plan for “all of the Disney Characters (to be AA) so everyone can see them. . . I have in mind a theater …” Reason enough to bring the Mickey Mouse Revue to Anaheim.

From the “Where are they now” department.

Anyone in the mood for some vintage advertisements? Fords were so cool in the 1960, here’s “Further Proof”.

I had a 1965 Lincoln, that thing was built like a vault! It’s hard to imagine when this model came out in 1961 it was considered a “smaller” luxury car.

In 1962 chemicals are your friend and who doesn’t love Polymers?

Need a light?

Wow, the 1963 Buick Riviera sure was striking. “Almost feline in its sure-footedness”.

Business machines talking “data” over a phone line, what will they think of next?

Cigarettes are nasty! And this lady seems to be getting a little friendly with these guys; you know what they say about musicians, its not just cigarettes they smoke!

Bonus Sunday

Welcome to Bonus Sunday. From Tuesday's "APRA Night at Disneyland - October 13, 1975" post (link) here is the entire Summer 1975 issue of Vacationland.

Vacationland Summer 1975 - 123mb

This is a case of the concept art looking better than the final version. The big heads aren't as noticeable (or scary) in this art work.

More Frontierland goodness.

Don't miss this great article on the transition of the Mission from the Moon to Mars.

Super multiple-page article on the much missed "One of a Kind" shop.

Magic Mountain is only two gallons north of Hollywood! And there's "No ticket books to fumble with"!

"Don't miss the boat!" And don't miss this cool mid-70's artwork.
