Disneyland Today October 8 thru 12, 1990

This Disneyland Today parking lot flyer covers the week of October 8 thru 12, 1990. There's one of the giant balloon figures from the Party Gras Parade.

Those character balloons were 4 stories tall!

$66.50 for three days is less than the current price for one day, although it's close to the $99 dollar three day offer Disneyland had this summer. Did you know Disney Dollars are Fun Money?

Notice that nothing starts past 5:15pm, the park closed at 6pm Tuesday thru Friday. There must have been some private parties.

Don't forget where you parked, for goodness sake don't leave your dog in the car, don't even try to bring food into the park, shirt and shoes are required silly, oh and how about buying some of those "fun" Disney Dollars?

Come back tomorrow for a mega trip report including "Where's the Moat?" & "What's in the Vault" (no, not the art work!). And don't forget that great Spring 1979 Vacationland will be featured on Bonus Sunday.

Mousekedays at Disneyland - October 1980

It’s October 1980 and what will you celebrate? How about Mousekedays at Disneyland? Join Cubby, Sharon, Tommy, Lonnie, Bonnie and Sherry as they sing and dance each weekend in October. Check out a fun vintage newspaper advertisement for Mousekedays over at the splendid “Meet the World” blog (link). Hey Goofy, do I know you?

The 25th celebration was actually starting to wind down by October, imagine actually ending an anniversary celebration during the year it takes place… I swear the Castle still has some 50th garb clinging to it. “Pizzazz” just hat names means they’re cool. The Golden Horseshoe takes reservations? Do they still? I usually just waltz right in a sit down.

Disneyland’s Incredible Shrinking Courtesy Guest Ticket

Have you noticed how things seem to be shrinking these days like cereal boxes & ice cream containers? This has happened before, but with “Courtesy Guest” tickets from Disneyland in the 1970’s. Sometimes even Disneyland is subject to cost cutting measures.

By the early 1970’s the “Courtesy Guest” ticket looked pretty much the same as it had for about a decade. Show here is a March 1972 ticket, this is the last issue of this style. Wow, that Globe paper is sure vivid, the paper is crisp and still feels new. The “X” in the serial number and the stars on the right side indicate this is a “Courtesy Guest” ticket.

Show here from top to bottom: From July 1972 an all new style still on the larger size tickets. The honor of “The Happiest Place on Earth” is now acknowledged, as it should be. Next from June 1975, the guest ticket has undergone some weight loss, but still has the same style. Least and last, the little ticket on the bottom is from September 1979. The updated castle - not so sure about that...

As you can see from the front on the books, by 1979, the “mini tickets” only required three pages to be printed, as the welcome message is attached to the first (of five) tickets. These “mini ticket” books are the flimsiest ticket books Disneyland every produced.

I want to be a Courtesy Guest, what do I have to do?

This post needs color - Time for a Vacationland! From the Spring of 1979, the Vivacious Betty Taylor graces the cover along with some other lovely ladies.

Love it or hate it, Big Thunder is coming in the Spring of 1979! Oh wait, maybe they would retract that if they could, I’m pretty sure it opened in September 1979. Be sure to read this article, it sounds like a great attraction. I still love it even if it didn't really come out as cool as this story depicts.

Come back on Bonus Sunday for the entire issue. This is one of the best “later” Vacationland, in fact, its in the top 5; An amazing 3 pages article on Betty Taylor and the "Revue" gang, “The Pendleton Story”, “Epcot Opens in 1982”, “Disneyland’s New Ambassador”, “The Disney Archives” with Dave Smith, and classic ads for all the local amusement parks.

I guess Disneyland opened July 18th?

Fence Industry Magazine - January 1981

Welcome to Magazine Monday. All you fence enthusiasts are in for a real treat today, the rest of us going to fall asleep while reading this post. From January 1981 it’s Fence Industry Magazine.

“Gear up for the 80’s” with the 19th Annual IFIA Show! A three and a half day event! Who do they think they are, D23?

This article is long and honestly a bit of snooze- fest. A few pages down they talk some generic stuff about Disneyland…

Garry (Happy Days) Marshall! I met him once at softball game in the San Fernando Valley, he couldn’t have been nicer and he's funny as heck too!

Stock photos?

Most of the articles were very industry related and dry as could be. This one is kind of interesting however. Do you really think that chain link fence held the big rig from flying off the side of the mountain?

The advertisements were really weird.

Believe it or not, there are still more magazines to post!!! A few more obscure ones (yes even more obscure than Fence magazine) some Disney World magazines (gasp) a few rare vintage Disneyland related magazines and some holiday issues, so Magazine Monday should run thru the end of 2009.

Bonus Sunday

From Friday's Knott's post (link), here's the complete Knott's Bear-y Tales Book.

Knott's Bear-y Tales Journey to the Fair -34mb

Who doesn't love these mid '70's illustrations?

Frogs anyone????

From Monday's "Yachtsmen" post, here is a link that has the entire Vinyl LP "High and Dry", plus tons of other GREAT Disney LP's. The interface is a little tricky to use and I could only get it to work in "Chrome", but it's worth the quirkiness once its starts playing.

Disney Albums Link (use Chrome to browse)

When you open the link, drag the "Load Albums" box to the center of the screen (it will be way off to the left), click the album title once and it will load all the songs into the web-based player. If you can figure out how to download and SAVE the mp3's from this site, LET ME KNOW!

Knott's Good Time Gazette - May 1976

It’s May 1976 and Knott’s Berry Farm has doubled the size of its Roaring 20’s area with the “Roaring 20’s Airfield”. Bear-y Tales has a new book for sale, since this was my favorite Knott’s attraction of all time I might just have that book.

Who doesn’t love a Knott’s Map? Hey wait, the new area described on the front page is blank on the map, I want my money back! I remember visiting Knott’s in the summer of 1976 and everything was in place and so new, it really had a great atmosphere, until…. I rode that darn Parachute Sky Jump and almost died at age 11 from a heart attack! Katella Gate said it perfect on a post over at Gorilla’s don’t blog (link): "There was no solid floor in the baskets either, just an open catwalk platform so you got to feel the air blowing over you as you fell to your death -- twice. PS - Looking up at the towerhead is just as bad as looking down.” So true, heck looking up was worse!

Exciting entertainment, Johnny (Secret Agent Man) Rivers!!!

As with everything vintage in my collection that was actually mine from when it was new, this book is beat up and sort of abused.

The colors are so vivid that a little tattering doesn’t really matter. I know EVERY turn on that map. Come back on Bonus Sunday for the entire book.

How about a set of tickets from May 1976? I love Knott’s tickets almost as much as Disneyland tickets, which is no surprise since they are blatant copies! Except remember, Knott’s lettered tickets are backwards in value compared with Disneyland. The “A” ticket at Knott’s is for the best attractions and Knott’s had no “E” ticket, their “D” ticket was the bottom of the line.

It’s a LOT taller than this beautiful concept art depicts.

The Gasoline Alley was very cool, great little cars. The concept art is not exactly how it came out, it didn’t have such a woodsy look to it.

Think Disneyland’s “A” ticket and you’ve got Knott’s “D” ticket. I’d give the archery range a shot!

I guess this little girl used her “D” ticket on the Merry-go-round.

Circarama Ticket

Here’s a pretty rare little ticket, measuring in at just one inch by two inches, this is one of the in-park “Stub Style” tickets. The earlier versions of these were for individual rides (link) and later they had only lettered (A thru E) designations.

This Circarama ticket is naturally undated, but I think its from the 1950’s. I need to research this more but the last appearance of “Circarama” was on the 1959 “C” ticket? (link). By 1960 Circarama was nowhere to be found on any tickets or the paid attractions list (link). Maybe the new “American the Beautiful” was our gift from the Bell System? I'd trade this ticket to see either show in a heart beat, even with its nice even serial number...

The back isn’t very exciting.

See more great Circarama photo’s at Daveland, Gorilla’s Don’t Blog and Stuff from the Park.

A different look at Disneyland’s Ambassador for 1965

Say hello to Disneyland’s Ambassador for 1965 Julie Reihm as she's off to another exciting destination or returning from one. Check out Julie over at Stuff from the Park (link), she getting ready for another flight there too! In the “Where are they now?” department, here's an interview with Julie from 2008 (link).

The back of Julie’s press photo reveals she is “Miss Disneylandia”. The photo is dated the January 24, 1965.

Well I bet you’ve never seen Julie like this before? If you like to play with paper dolls (who doesn't?) you can download a high resolution scan here (33mb .tif file). Print it, cut it and have fun.

The Paper doll is on the back side of this one page article from an unknown (don’t’ you hate that?) magazine dated August 1965. "Miss Disneyland-off to far places".
