Phantom Boats at Disneyland

Here's a fun shot of Disneyland's rare Phantom Boats. I know they had problems with these and they didn't last very long at the park, but boy do they look cool or what? Could you imagine blazing down the Colorado River today in one of these, I bet you'd get some odd looks!

This photo appears to be from when Disneyland had a cast member do the driving. If you check out this photo (link) from Daveland, you can see there are no cast members driving. In fact, Dave's photo shows a steering wheel in the front seat and today's photo clearly shows there is no steering wheel up front? Did they removed the front steering wheel or add it later? I'm thinking the removed it after too many guest "incidents"... Either way they're cool and I want one!

From Late 1955, the famous "B" Ride ticket, it's not a "B" Coupon yet. The Phantom Boats are the sole "ride" in Tomorrowland on this ticket. (This image was borrowed from http://www.keeline.com/):

The old "Stub Style" tickets have the boats referred to as: "Speed Boat", was this from the first naming of the ride "Tomorrowland Speed Boats" or did they just simplify the names on the tickets?

Richfield's Official Disneyland Road Map - 1955

Do you need help finding Disneyland? How about using this handy “Official Disneyland Road Map”. Courtesy of your friendly Richfield dealer. This map doesn’t have a date, but must be from 1955 as it mentions the fabulous “new” Disneyland Hotel. I can never get enough of the early Disneyland artwork.

Be sure to visit Richfield at Disneyland. The Autopia cars run on the New Richfield Ethyl. Is Richfield’s “Years-Ahead Show near Autopia” the same thing a “The World Beneath Us”?

Motoring Tip! Always fill up with Richfield Ethyl! It's neat how Richfield had a service station “immediately adjacent to Disneyland”, more excellent corporate sponsorship.

There’s a lot to look at here in the close-up section. I see a Katella Gate Entrance in 1955 (link) and mention to use the Katella Gate Entrance should you head north on Harbor by mistake.

Souvenir Thursday - “Miracles from Molecules”

Time for an Audio/Visual Disneyland Souvenir. This little record is undated (would it have been that hard to print little two digit number for the year?) but I’ll take a guess that it's from 1967. Monsanto presents “Miracles from Molecules”. That’s some groovy artwork on the cover.

Dr. Charles Allen Thomas, former President and Chairman of the board of Monsanto worked closely with the late Walt Disney on the idea of visualization of the exhibit”. Just one more reason to have kept this attraction. At least fix the original facade (link).

The record itself is interesting. It’s a 7 inch record, but plays at 33 rpm’s instead of 45 rpm’s. Usually this is done to get a longer recording on each side, but at 2:34 this could have fit the 45 format no problem. Also, I guess “Monsanto” had its own recording label! Wonderland Music gets BMI publisher rights.

Time for some vintage Disneyland Audio. Boy does this remind me of the Carousel of Progress, no surprise there. The lyrics are below if you want to sing along.

Miracles from molecules around us every where,
there are miracles from molecules in the Earth, the sea, the air!
Now men with dreams are furthering what nature first began:
making modern miracles from molecules for man!

Every atom is a world, an infinity unfurled!
A world of innerspace without an end!
A world of mystery, of endless energy,
with treasures more than man can ever spend!

Miracles from molecules are dawning every day,
discoveries for happiness in a fab-u-lous array!
A never-ending search is on by men who dare and plan:
making modern miracles from molecules for ma-a-an,
making modern miracles from molecules for man!

p.s. I know this song made you smile...

Marineland Complimentary & Director's Day Pass

Taking a little break from Disneyland lets look at some Marineland tickets. Up first is a Complimentary Admission pass from 1976. Issued by “Valid” Cool! Hmm, the whale says “Twentieth Century Fox” above Marineland, I didn’t know they owned it at one time?

Easy Directions… This “easy” map doesn’t really reflect how long of a drive it is from either freeway off ramp, its no 3 minute ride, you better bring provisions...

From the fall of 1978 it’s a “Director’s Day Pass” I guess directors “day” ran for three months! Families over 6 are specifically discriminated against so leave those “extra” kids at home! Hanna-Barbera has now taken over Marineland, even Yogi and Scooby won’t help its eventual decline and closure.

Check out my previous post from the earlier days of Marineland 1962 (link).

Disneyland Complimentary Ticket - July 18, 1955

Time for a serious "Vintage Disneyland Ticket". The scan of this magical ticket was sent in from an avid Disneyland ticket collector friend of mine, thank you “SD”!

From July 18, 1955, that would be Disneyland’s “opening day” to some folk’s perception. It was the first day the park was open to the paying public. The holder of this ticket didn’t have to pay for any ride or amusements (no attractions yet). It’s not totally clear; did this ticket get you thru the front gate also? I’m thinking it did.

Time and date stamped on the back. Oh man, someone scribbled something in pencil all over the back! Do you suppose it genuine?

Magazine Monday revisits 1955, 1956 & 1957

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today's edition is a re-broadcast (repeat) of three magazine posts from last year.

Disneyland in Life - August 15, 1955

August 15, 1955. This is a four page article on Disneyland from Life Magazine.

Interesting how only four pages were dedicated to this Disneyland article. MacArthur gets 25 pages and an article on a 1950’s house wife “The 80-hour work week” gets 10 pages! I guess Disneyland was still not a “sure thing” just a few weeks after its opening, therefore if only gets four pages. And it’s very “light” on the text.

First up, the Tea Cups with no paint on the deck! That’s the “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party” to be more precise.

Next some shots of from the river boat as they “Circle Jungle Island”? The Castle shot slides over to the other page so I tried to include the whole castle in this scan. Notice the castle windows, you can see straight thru them!

Children’s Saloon? I suppose that’s because they don’t sell alcohol? Those Coke fountains sure look neat! Notice a few things on the Casey Jr. Ride; Nice landscaping for the Canal Boats! Is that a TV camera on a raised platform thing? If so, was this for the opening day broadcast? I thought Casey Jr. didn’t open for about a week after Disneyland opened so what’s up with the camera?

Lots O’ Indians in this picture, real ones! Interesting “Buckboard” ride, I don’t think I’ve seen that on any tickets! Not much to hold the guests in, better hold on tight.

This Life magazine is FULL of great 1955 car ads. I am a vintage car nut, I used to buy and sell them like trading cards, I am much better now. But I sure love looking at these old ads. Since I am mostly a GM fan, the first three are beauties by GM. Then a Mercury, Nash and a Studebaker. I guess Chrysler was not up to spending the advertising dollars to be in Life Magazine.

My first car was a 1956 Buick Super 4-door Riviera hardtop, very much like this 1955 Buick Century.

Even the ink pens were “car crazy” in 1955. Styled in Multimillion-dollar new car colors.

I’m told the 1950’s really weren’t this fun; it’s just the way everyone wanted it to be. Maybe that wasn’t a bad thing; at least they “wanted” it to be idealistic. Today, I am not so sure….

Magic Circle Magazine - June 1956

From June 1956 it’s “Magic Circle” magazine. “Published in the interests of Perfect Circle distributors, dealers, garages, repair shops and super service stations all over the world, by Perfect Circle Corporation.” The back cover has an ad for Perfect Circle, they make piston rings!

Great front cover. This magazine is “Life” size at about 10 ½” by 13 ½”, but with only 15 pages in this issue.

The inside of the front cover. My first car in 1980 was a 1956 Buick just like the one on the far left in the middle photo! Nice Mercedes setup and Cynthia Patrick looks mighty fine too.

Now presented for your enjoyment, an interesting "look at" Disneyland as it looked and more importantly felt in 1956.

Buick Magazine - May 1957

Staying with the Buick theme, we’ve got “Buick Magazine", from May 1957. That clock is way cool!

Straight forward two page article.

1957 Buick Special, longer, lower and wider than the 1956 Buick I used to own. It‘s still a classic design.

Fun article on how the design of Buick’s (and Bra’s) has changed.

Photos of Walt I’ve never seen - Part 2

Taking a second look at photos of Walt’ I’ve never seen before (see the first look here – link) Today we’ve got “The Disney World" August 1966 ”issue. There are plenty of “new” Walt photos in this issue, new to me at least.

The cover has a stellar photo of Dean Jones and Yvette (My favorite movie - The Time Machine) Mimieux. They were set to star in “Monkeys, Go Home”. You can download the entire issue here:

The Disney World / August 1966 – 74mb

Walt was definitely looking older in these photos, but he’s working hard still and with a smile.

Information about the new MAPO division, boy were they busy back then!

Trip Report - Happy 54th Birthday Disneyland!

What an amazing day at the park yesterday! It was warm, clear and slightly breezy, can’t ask for much better in July! The crowds were reasonable; however the park did start to get pretty crowded as evening approached. In addition to the fabulous day, I got the privilege to meet and spend time at the park with Daveland and TokyoMagic, thanks gents, great meeting you and nice to be at the park with other Disneyland Blogers!

Get to the park at 7:15am and you’ve got the parking lot and tram area basically to yourself.

At about 7:30am the lines were just starting to form.

As soon as we were let in (8:00am) all the guests were routed to the right side tunnel entrance. On the left side they had just finished a retirement ceremony for Marty Skylar (I saw the back of his head!) he got a window near City Hall. I guess my invitation for this even got lost in the mail.

Jumping ahead to later in the day, this was the only sign (or printed material of any kind) regarding the “Special Ceremony” at town square for Disneyland 54th anniversary.

Even though a ton of people had no idea what this was for (I told at least ½ a dozen folks why there was a ceremony) there were plenty of people packed into town square.

I didn’t even try to get up close, I’ve seen Mickey & Minnie before and who exactly is this Mayor (of Munchkin city?).

My camera takes ok video, it would help if I held it still, but you get the idea. Not many things give me goose bumps, but hearing Walt’s dedication speech replayed in Town Square at 4:45pm on July 17th is sort of magical. Check out the release of the Doves at the end of the video, NICE TOUCH DISNEY!!!!

While in town square I found this little fellow.

Guess where I found this little guy?

The Rocketeer, does anyone even know who he is?

New Orleans Square was its usual charming self.

The pirate fortune teller is all by himself in this little room between shops, I don’t think anyone was paying him any attention.

The cool painted mirrors in the former Perfume shop, Walt had these custom made based on originals he had seen overseas, they are in great shape still.

Cool drinking fountain in front of the perfume store.

Where’s a sack of C & H sugar when you need it?

Obligatory Matterhorn shot, the photo doesn't show it, but it was pretty crowded all day.

Retroland doing better than ever.

Fun poster hidden away in the shop outside of Small World.

Here a fun discovery (Thank you TokyoMagic!!!). This little photo booth is actually an original ticket booth. I need to do more research to find out where it originally stood and looked like.

Mary has work at the park for over 20 years and confirmed this is an original booth. Actually if you look at the wood work, you can tell it’s pretty darn old! Mary said Kodak sponsors the booth. I gave her a vintage “C” ticket, she was thrilled and I’m happy the ticket is back home. I could have given her an “E” ticket, but the “C” ticket has all the Fantasyland attractions.

Alright, I don’t hate it as much as I used to. It placement stinks, could you have picked a worse place to put it? But now that’s its all refurbished, shiny and working correctly, it is pretty fun to look at!

Three Fences is doing well, if not a little over grown. (Rant warning): Just because this spot is kind of out of the way and secluded does not mean you can SMOKE there. I saw folks smoking there all day, yuck!!!

Any to make matters worse; there were cigarette buts in the plants! (Come on smokers, don’t be rude & gross!) Brittany was doing and amazing job of cleaning up, with her blue glove on she was picking buts and popcorn and a beer bottle caps (huh?) out of the plants, making a little pile on the curb, then she swept it all up. Disney, give this woman a raise, she was awesome. I personally thanked her, I think it took her by surprise.

Over by the Space Mountain fass-pass area is the old long gone “Space Place”. The original menu has been replaced with “Space” panels, I think someone didn’t put this one in incorrectly, please contact the sign shop to have this corrected…

Why do I like 32 year old blue tiles so much?

More vintage tile!

Now I know why the speed ramp to the upstairs of the Starcade is closed, because the “X” wing is about to detach from its mounts and take flight!

Cool 70’s space mural. Too bad it’s almost impossible to see!

Between America Sings and Mission to Mars, a little bit of Wally Crump?

The PeopleMover track is still the coolest design ever. They have got to do something with this and I don’t mean removing it. “At least its still there” is the new chant for Vintage Disneyland fans.

The flag ceremony was an hour after the re-dedication ceremony. The flag holders looked military serious.

They didn’t seem so serious with the Dapper Dan in tow!.

Nice band!

Last picture for the post and its hard to see. It’s not easy to time this from a moving tram, in fact it was more of a guess. Yup that’s the gullywhomper. It appears to be upon of blocks and possibly the hull has had work done on it. Do you think its even possible that Disney would return her to service??? I know all the reasons not to (it tips over, lawyers, cast member cost, maint, etc.) But how cool would that be? Maybe if they brought it back for the 55th anniversary they could promote its link to the past (the park & the movies). I’m dreaming I know. But hey, according to what I was told all day “Dreams come true”…
