Disneyland Special Season Ticket Book - 1961

Since yesterday’s Magazine Monday post was from 1961, let stay in that magical year and take a look at a rare Disneyland ticket book.

From January 1961, this is a “Special Season Ticket Book”. I’ve just got one of these and its only got one ticket left, but it's in nice shape for being almost 50 years old. Several unusual features on these books and tickets: They expire May 21, 1961. Generally after 1956 Disneyland tickets from the books had no expiration date, part of the “sales pitch” for the ticket books was that you could bring back unused tickets on your next visit(s). Also, these type of “Any Attraction” tickets (with those awesome attraction drawings) were usually reserved for “in-park” ticket books that did not include an admission ticket. This book however did include the admission ticket.

Even the back of the ticket has the void reference. This is a beautiful sheet of vintage globe paper, it even smells good.

Walt’s welcome message just under the missing admission ticket, I wish I had that!!!

The back of the book shows why these tickets expired so soon. For the same price as a “regular” 10 ticket A thru E Adult book, you got this book with admission and 10 “E” Tickets! I suppose they are “potential "E" tickets since you can use them on any ride. If you used one of these on the Carousel you’re nuts!

1961 had plenty of attractions to enjoy in each land, except Adventureland, the Swiss family was still at sea and those birds haven't learned to sing yet.

"Teen" Magazine - February 1961

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Following up on last weeks 1967 Tiger Beat's Fave post (link) this week we’ve got “'Teen” Magazine from February 1961. Are the Everly Brothers splitting up… Why?

A simple two page article has you following Pat Molittieri thru a fun filled New Years Eve at Disneyland. The most interesting part to me is how Pat and her boyfriend over dressed for the event. Pat says “Some of the girls were even wearing Capris and many of the guys were in Levis. This could only happen in California”. If you need better scans, high resolution copies are available here (Page 1) and (Page 2).

The Everly’s Bust-up! This article is a bust as the duo remained together until 1973 when they began a ten year split; “The duo split on July 14, 1973, when Don Everly came onstage too drunk to perform at Knotts Berry Farm. This was especially embarrassing since it was billed as their last performance, and so family members, friends, and fans from within the music industry were in heavy attendance … The brothers reformed in 1983.” (Wikipedia link).

Here’s your “CinemaScoop” page. Ricky Nelson looks more like “Rick” by 1961. Look, its “Dennis the Menace’s” Jay north in Pepe? I've never heard of Pepe but wow it had an all-star cast of cameos (link); Bing Crosby, Bobby Darrin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jimmu Durante, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Judy Garland, Greer Garson, Hedda Hopper, Joey Bishop, Ernie Kovacs, Peter Lawford, Janet Leigh, Jack Lemon, Kim Novak, Donna Reed, Edward G. Robinson!, Caesar Romero, Charles Coburn, Dean Martin and Ann B. Davis! I have GOT to see this movie! And of course, who can forget “Gorgo”!

Sally was “Blue”, but now Sally is “Gay with Midol”. I’m glad we got that cleared up.

First time ever record offer! Nothing like floating disembodied heads to make you want to buy something.

Elvis Presley’s latest album “His Hand in Mine”. This was Elvis’ first 12” LP (long play) gospel album for RCA. It was also the follow-up to the excellent “Peace in the Valley” from 1957 - Elvis was at his best doing gospel (link).

Because this “Magazine Monday’s” Disneyland article was so short, here’s a little more Disneyland, this fun cover of Vacationland from the Winter of 1960-1961 has none other than Vesey Walker leading the band down Main Street.

This issue is short at only 12 pages but there a few pages of vintage Disneyland nuggets. A great two page article “A Backward glance and a Look ahead” and another super two page article “News From Disneyland”. Here’s one of the “News” stories. Who else loves this concept art???

Another "News" story; looks like Pat, her date and 15,000 other folks paid $5.50 each for a splendid (but cold) New Years Eve at Disneyland.

Dolly Madison Cakes and a Fantasyland Fun-fare!

Come back on Bonus Sunday for the entire issue Vacationland Winter 1960-1961. I hope everyone had a great Independence day. Mine? - There was "peace in the valley for me".

Summer Scene 1971 - Happy Independence Day

Happy Independence Day to everyone! Loyal readers might notice this is a shameful repeat from last year, hey it’s a holiday so I didn’t want to work too hard!

Disneyland’s Summer Scene, July 4th thru the 10th, 1971.

Fun entertainment, plus of course, Fantasy in the Sky fireworks!

Have a safe Independence Day everyone, Happy Birthday and god bless America.

Disneyland - Vistor's Pass

Today’s post is an odd and undated item, it’s a “Disneyland Visitor’s Pass”. This must have been for outside companies to get access to the back-stage/on-stage areas. Interesting that “WDI” is treated as just another vendor, you’d think the WDI folks would get some kind of permanent pass. Drip pans required (they must have seen me coming in my ’78 Buick!). Looks like this pass was supposed to be returned? “Destination: Des. Trlr.” Anyone want to guess what that is?

The map on the back of the visitor’s pass is in very small print. Here’s a link to the full 1200 DPI scan (Link – 61mb). Hey wait, America Sings and Splash Mountain on the same map??? What year is this from???

This close-up of Tomorrowland shows Caption EO and a few other sorely missed attractions.

And just because this post needs some color, here’s a great photo from a page in the 30th anniversary calendar, February 1985 to be precise.

Papotin's Revue - Summer 1963

Once again you’ve got “Two Wonderful Ways to Enjoy Disneyland”, this time it’s for the Summer of 1963.

I’ve never noticed the guided tours being called a “Happiness Trip” before, I bet they dropped that pretty quick.

Do you think Disneyland is open every day in the summer?

Don’t miss this “Unique Special Attraction – Direct from Paris” its Andre Tahon and “Papotin’s Revue”. This show ran only for a few months in 1963, but still managed over 500 shows! Please “Present an ‘E’ Coupon from your ticket book”…

Here’s the aforementioned “E” ticket from June 1963.

Mr. Tahon himself, he looks better than his drawing above. Check out this blog (link) for tons of information on Andre.

And from Jed’s somewhat dormant but still excellent blog, here are two rare promotional items from these two posts on his blog "Vintage Disneyland Goodies". (link) and (link). Be sure and read the comments on those posts, lots of great information.

Disneyland - Summer 1987

Looking back 22 summers ago, let’s visit Disneyland thru a “Disneyland Summer Program”. This brochure is large sized and heavy stock glossy paper, not the usual “gate flyer” by any means. Effective June 20, 1987 thru September 6, 1987. This brochure is for Disneyland Hotel and other “Anaheim Area Lodging Guests

Nice calendar, open every day!

Hey - I remember THIS Disneyland! Chili Dogs at The Space Place anyone?

Tons of great stuff to do. The Videopolis Stage was featuring “Singin’, Dancin’, Heigh Ho”. Short funny story; I overheard this in Fantasyland last year near the exit to Snow White from a teenage girl as said to her teen friend “That part about the 'High Ho’s' was from before women’s lib”, true story.

Disney Dollars are brand new having just been introduced on May 5th, 1987. In the early 90’s my family, friends and I actually used Disney Dollars as all day spending money. The problem the dollars however was two fold (a) it’s easier to spend money that looks fake! And (b)The company assumes that a certain number of Disney dollars will never be redeemed. The assumption is that a substantial percentage of the Disney dollars will be thrown away, kept as souvenirs or forgotten.” Wikipedia (link).

How about some pretty tickets?

Next, a full length brochure that came with the “summer program” above. Its dated 1986 so it must have been good for the entire year of 1987. This is a scan of the front and back as its really one large portrait. Ironically I was going to post this last Friday, but with the passing of Michael Jackson I did a small tribute instead. I didn’t post this brochure (expect the Captain EO Logo on the cover) because oddly there are no photos of the Captain himself.

Maybe Michael hadn't finished his parts in the movie yet since this was published in 1986?

Yummy food!

That Coke and burger look pretty darn tasty.

Goofy, do I know you?

Stellar Mark Twain photo at the end. This brochure sure makes me want to go to the park… in 1987

Disneyland - Summer 1965

Welcome to the best summer ever at Disneyland, Summer ’65! This flyer is in amazing condition for being 44 years old, if only I were in such a well preserved state! The “First Fabulous Decade”.

Two Wonderful ways to enjoy Disneyland. Technically there are three ways if you count two types of ticket books and the tour.

Lots of old school entertainment, “All at 20,000 Leagues Exhibit”? That seems odd. Plus, just for Jason, “Hootenanny” every Monday and “Humdinger” every Tuesday!

Open Daily. The Plaza Inn is all new!
