Grad Nite Party - 1963

Time for the next Grad Nite Party, this one is on June 21, 1963. 12 Midnight to 5:30am, I suppose if you're young those hours are no problem, I’m yawning just thinking about it! Looks like who ever had this ticket didn’t get the photo like my parents did in 1962. Smile for the birdie…

Please excuse the paste marks, it must have been in someone's scrap book. “Date Dresses for the Girls”, what kind of dress is not for a date?

This 1963 program was posted last year so it’s kind of a repeat, but it does go perfectly with the ticket since they are for the same exact date. The fun early 1960’s art work is similar the Grad Nite 1962 record jacket cover from yesterday's post.

The High School names were printed on this “tissue like” paper that’s pretty thick, it reminds me of a wedding invitation. Is your High School on there? Mine isn't, it wasn't build until 1969.

The cute couple that are under the tissue paper.

Lots of super talented entertainment with great “action” drawings.  The Yachtsmen aboard the Columbia, I am so there!

KFWB Channel 98 was On-The-Air "Live" featuring those Swingin KFWB DJ's!

A blank piece of that same tissue type paper separates the back page. No photo, but there are some details on what attractions they rode, like Autopia Sr.

See you tomorrow for Grad Nites '64 & '65!

Grad Nite Party - 1962

Welcome to Disneyland's Grad Nite Party June 1962.  Grad Nite at Disneyland started in 1961, however I’ve been unable to find anything from that first year. It seems as if the “paper goods” started in 1962. If anyone has any Grad Nite 1961 paper stuff, please let me know.

So let’s start this June Grad Nite series in 1962! From my very own personal collection (no I was not at Disneyland in 1962!) this Grad Nite Party photo and holder belongs to none other than my own mom and dad.

It’s hard for me to believe it, but my mom is only 17 in this photo, while my skinny dad is 23 looking all of 12!  My mom has no recollection where in the park this photo was taken or how in the world she walked around the park in those shoes! My dad does recall being highly embarrassed having to ride a school bus to the park while he left his ’57 (turquoise blue) Thunderbird parked at home. Check out the happy couple at the park 8 ½ years later, now “married with children” (link).

Just the other day Disneyland had its 5 millionth Grad Nite Guest, wow (link),

The rest of this post if a repeat from last year, but it fits with the 1962 Grad Nite Party Photo. Buena Vista Records proudly presents “Grad Nite at Disneyland 1962 with the Elliott Brothers Orchestra”.  1962 Grad’s are having a blast on the cover. The paper sleeve has that fun textured feel like an oil painting on canvas.

The songs for the 45rpm record were “extracted” from “Date Nite at Disneyland with the Elliott Brothers”.

The 45 has a black label on a black record, so the scan came out so-so.

Two parts for your listening pleasure today. First, “That’s All” This recording on my digital camera does not do the audio justice, the bass is rather deep and the overall fidelity is remarkably good for a 46 year old record.

Second up is “Goodnight Sweetheart” this is neat because at the end one of the Elliott Brothers introduces the band members and thanks everyone for being at Disneyland, fun stuff.

Look Magazine - July 26, 1955

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today’s feature is Look Magazine from July 26, 1955. I’m still thinking “Magazine Monday’s” should have been in chronological order, oh well, too late now… This large format Look magazine promises some “Disneyland” inside, it’s in there, just don’t expect any photos ot it.

A nice long eight page article about Walt. There’s talk of Disneyland in there somewhere.

Meet Davy Crocket. Fess Parker always seemed like a classy guy to me, America sure was in love with the guy!

This page is just weird, it’s not really an ad and I’m not sure what it’s doing in Look magazine in 1955, "looks" more 2005.

Now for a bunch of vintage advertisements, these are a real slice of Americana circa 1955. Texaco’s new Sky Chief Gasoline, its climate controlled for all 48 states!

Some gents and their Gin.

Super artwork on this inside cover ad for Grape-Nuts Flakes.

I want that Heinz Minute Meals dispenser/warmer, too cool!

Swift’s Premium Bacon, served at Disneyland I wonder?

America’s beverage of moderation is back (link) with “Friends from across the lake”, spin those 78’s and drink lots of cold, pure, clean beer because “Beer Belongs – Enjoy it!”

Smoking is evil it kills, blah, blah; old ads lie and tell you it’s good. This old ad however may have a bit of truth in its “Psychological Fact”. I’ve known a person or two who’s disposition makes Godzilla seem friendly, but after their “smoke break” they’re calm, cool and collected (albeit stinky). Maureen O’Hara will be 89 years old in August, I’m guessing she didn’t use this product.

Bonus Sunday

Welcome to Bonus Sunday! From Tuesday’s NRC Nite post (link)., here is the entire Summer 1968 Disneyland Guide.

Disneyland Guide Book Summer 1968 - 18mb

Naturally this is one of my favorite pages!

Your Summer 1968 entertainment line-up, ah the gold old days!

Late but not forgotten, this Vacationland Summer 1978 issue was shown on a post a couple weeks ago (link) but got missed last Sunday.

Vacationland Summer 1978 – 61mb

There must be at least one ad for every Southern California Tourist destination in this magazine. When did Scooby and the gang invade Marineland?

Two daily parades this summer! Sound like a great idea for 2010, do some silly 55th parade during the day then at night run the Main Street Electrical Parade on Main Street!

A Chilly Challenge; to find a way out….

Does anyone else remember these candies during the 1970’s? I seem to recall these candies had a resurgence in the late ‘70’s, I remember buying $5 worth at Disneyland and eating them eating them all day long, at some point they become lethal and started to slice up your mouth pretty bad!

It's a Small World Souvenir Saturday

Now that the controversy over the new additions to It’s a Small World have calmed down, lets take an “official” look at the changes. I guess they gave these out the first few days it opened? Funny, I was there a week after it opened and got nothing but a long line!

The “additions” look more dramatic on this map than they really are. Oh they are there and a couple of them do stick out a little (Woody & Jessie!), but when weighed against the amazing upgrade to the lighting and audio systems, plus the overall grand refurbishment, it's a win for Disneyland fans.

The back has this Radio Disney ad.  I guess Small World has no sponsor, so why not self promote?

A little look ahead; Tomorrow – Bonus Sunday, Monday – Magazine Monday, and starting Tuesday, its Grad Nite Madness Week(s) – 20 years worth of Grad Nites scattered over about 10 posts, some old stuff from last year posts and plenty of new stuff! (Cue the graduation music here)

Disneyland - 1956 Bank of America

As the “Bank on Main Street” at Disneyland gets ready to close, and following up on Davelands super Vault Door post yesterday (link) let’s take a look back near the beginning of the banks history.  This “Your Guide to Disneyland” is compliments of Bank of America. This brochure is almost identical to the first version produced by Bank of America in 1955 (link to prior post), even the front panel is dated 1955. However, as the inside map will reveal, this version is from 1956.

Nice rendering of the bank, even if there are a couple of windows missing (link).

You can check the prior post (link) to see the $1 version that was sold on EBay, I can’t recall how much it sold for, but it was in the hundreds. Notice the $10 money order has an incorrect “side wheeler” as the river boat at Disneyland.

This map is very different from the 1955 version (link). While the 1955 version has drawings that attempt to represent the actual structures, this 1956 version is very whimsical and cartoonish.  I like them both, but the 1955 one is still my favorite, probably because its the first edition.

The back panel does have a slight change, or revision from the original (link). The red ink show an update to 600 branches and B of A is a member of the FDIC.

Disneyland's Big Band Festival - May 27 & 28, 1972

Two wonderful ways to enjoy Disneyland”. I’m really digging the cool blue ink of this parking lot flyer from May 27 & 28, 1972.   You better read what’s inside, it’s IMPORTANT!

Another Disneyland Entertainment Special at Regular Prices!” I bet that weekend was indeed “two fun-filled nights of entertainment”. Then a Memorial Day Parade on Monday and the new Bear Country!

Here’s your two wonderful ways to chose from. Come on, go for the Deluxe 15 Ticket Book, its Disneyland!

For goodness sakes “don’t misplace your car”! Oh and Pluto says I have permission to kick your rear-end if you leave your pets in the car.

How about some vintage color? This snap shot is naturally undated. I could try and pass it off as 1972, but I think the Upjohn Pharmacy left Main Street around 1970, so let's call it 1968.
