Bonus Sunday

Welcome to Bonus Sunday. Today’s we’ve got a Vacationland from the Summer of 1973. Usually Bonus Sunday features something from a post that occurred during the week, this Sunday is just something I selected because I like it. Sort of a “Bloggers Cut” Bonus Sunday.

The cover features the new and exiting Main Street Electrical Parade, a very similar design can be found on the cover of the Summer 1973 Disneyland Guide Book (link).

Be sure to download the entire issue, there’s great articles on; The New Walt Disney Story, “Electrical Lights – Magical Nights”, "Le Gourmet" in New Orleans Square and more.

Vacationland Summer 1973 – 47mb

Nice centerfold, super early 70’s colors. I didn’t crop the top off, that's the way it was.

The aroma of a sizzling teriyaki steak, boy does Disneyland need that now. Bring back the Tahitian Terrance, its a lot easier than bringing back Adventure Thru Inner Space (I want that back too!).

The Mark Twain, looking good, you’ll have to download the entire issue to read the rest of this article.

I find this next part fascinating. These “Vacationlands” were for visitors to Southern California and apparently Disney did not feel threatened by other area parks and attractions. In fact, Disney seemed to embrace them. It was pretty shrewd actually; you know these other parks paid top dollar to advertise in Disneyland’s magazine.

Here are eleven Southern California attractions that advertise in this issue. I've been to nine of them, I never saw the Japanese Village or the Alligator Farm.  How many have you been to?

See you tomorrow on Magazine Monday where A.E.N. will be happy to greet you.

Disneyland VIP Party 1988 - Star Tours Style

Some of Disneyland’s special event tickets of the late 80’s and early 90’s were creatively challenged. This VIP Party ticket show’s the one year old Star Tours but has no mention of it in the text and why is it boxed in the center like that?

You’ll notice this ticket was good on January 10, 1988 or one of the next four Sunday’s in a row. 12 Noon to 12 Midnight sounds like special (or VIP) hours!

Speaking of Star Tours, here is a scan that was donated my Major at Gorilla’s Don’t Blog. Thanks Major, how did you know I might need one of these? I must confess, after my last few trips to Endor I was looking for somewhere solid to sit down and recover. Maybe the attraction  just needs a refurbishment or maybe I do?

See you tomorrow on Bonus Sunday.

Operation M.O.U.S.E. - January 1969

It's the return of Operation M.O.U.S.E. Exclusively for Members of Disneyland's Magic Kingdom Club (a series post is coming soon on the MKC, really). January 1969 is the Month Of Unusual Savings in Entertainment.

Has anyone ever seen that "Mouse Money"?  I think I passed one up years ago on EBay not knowing what it was! Good for 50¢ on food or merchandise or admission to any attraction, now I really want one!

Be sure and check out "Stuff from the Park's" blog post today (link) it features an "Inside Disneyland" from 1969 that has info on operation mouse!  Thanks Matterhorn!

Main Gate Admission - Compliments of the Upjohn Company

Here’s a rare Main Gate Admission ticket. It’s a ticket from the Upjohn Company. The Upjohn Pharmacy was on Main Street from 1955 to 1970, this ticket is from 1966 or later. 1966 was the year of a price increase to 75¢ for Child admission; it was 60¢ prior to that. The low serial number tells me this might be a 1966 ticket. Hey, the "Disneyland" font and train station graphics match my blog header, cool! (thanks again Richard!)

This ticket doesn’t actually state “Complimentary” most variations of these tickets do state "Complimentary" (link to prior post). My thought is that tickets like in today's post were purchased from Disneyland by the Upjohn Company and then they gave them out with their “Compliments”.

A great vintage postcard of the Upjohn Pharmacy. This came from a great new site www.disneylandpostcards.net there are some amazing scans from a collection of over 2,000 postcards! And I thought I had a lot of tickets! Be sure and check out the postcard site and the related blog (link).

Am I the only one that thinks that thing hanging over the door looks likes like a small version of the clock of the future?

Get Ready for a Winning Day - Jan. 5, 1986

From January 5, 1986, are you ready for a winning day? This was a promotion where “everyones a winner” sounds like the current “what will you celebrate” promotion!

Here’s a “blank” GiftGiver Extraordinaire ticket, obviously not a winner!

Looks like we started something” Ok, sure…

I want that 1986 Firebird!

The GiftGiver ticket came from Ebay along with the “certificate” I guess I need to attend some of these shows!

McCall's - February 1956

Welcome to “Magazine Monday” a new weekly post featuring a vintage Magazine relating to or otherwise about Disneyland or Walt Disney World.  This weekly series will continue until the material runs dry - we are good until at least spring.  Sometimes we’ll have just a short article and even some great vintage ads. Oh, and expect the obscure.

Let’s kick off Magazine Monday with McCall’s Magazine from February 1956. McCall’s is one of the first, if not the first women’s magazines. It was published up until 2001 when it was renamed “Rosie” (yup, that Rosie) and promptly ceased publication in 2002 (Link).

These were BIG “Life” sized magazines measuring in at 10 ½ by 13 ½ inches. Super castle picture on the cover, but where is that lady standing?

She sure is a sharp dresser. Looks to me like she is going to fall in? In fact, is she even really there? Was this a pre-Photoshop fixed photo?

Tight fitting trousers and a gay shirt” Hey, I didn’t make it up; I’m just copying what it says!

It feels like we are on a game show with these descriptions of the clothes. What’s Carol Marol wearing today? It must be from “Spiegel, Chicago Ill. 60609”.

How about a few vintage ads? These are a real time capsule of mid 50’s America. New Cascade for the new fangled “automatic” dishwashers, that's an idea that will never catch on.

Mamma Mia that’s a good Pizza! Slick recipe here for some good 50’s style Pizza Pie!

Here’s a fun beer ad. I want to be the guy running the music, how cool is he with a beer in one hand and the other hand turning up the Hi-fi volume, all the while keeping that great smile. “Beer Belongs – Enjoy it” but remember its “America’s Beverage of Moderation”.

After the party guests leave the faithful housewife is going to vacuum up with her fancy Electrolux vacuum. “Sold only on home demonstration by your friendly Electrolux Man

This last scan is not an ad, rather it's something very sobering. Here is a comparison of the 1956 Russian workers daily meals vs. the 1956 USA workers daily meals. Wow, that’s quite a contrast, I am so glad to be living in the USA!

Next weeks “Magazine Monday” will continue in 1956 with a comical look at Disneyland.

Bonus Sunday

Welcome to Bonus Sunday! First, lets start off with something non-vintage, but most certainly a Bonus, well, a Bonus for me!

This little folder arrived in my mail box yesterday. This is my first Annual Pass renewal, so I was extra excited to see this.

Inside are some nice words about the “Magic of Membership” and...

Here’s the magic for me, my annual pass! I’d show you the back but (a) The mouse might not like that since it’s a current & valid pass and (b) the photo that's on my license is better than this one!

From Monday’s post (link) here is the complete Fall/Winter 1981-82 Vacationland.

Vacationland Fall/Winter 1981-82 – 68.5mb

Adventures in Peter Pan Country” Better catch those adventures while you can, this whole area, ship, skull and all, will be gone in less than a year (link).

From Thursday’ post (link) here is the complete Winter/Spring 1964 Vacationland.

Vacationland Winter/Spring 1964 – 56.5mb

The Majestic Matterhorn. This article is a little hard to read due the drawing of the Matterhorn encroaching on the text… The Full PDF above might be easier to read.

The centerfold “Highlights”.

The back of the annual passport folder, it’s all in the details.

Come back tomorrow for the first edition of “Magazine Monday” Featuring “McCall’s” magazine from February 1956.

Disney Newsreel - Tokyo Disneyland Opens

Following up on yesterday's post, here is a "Disney Newsreel" dated April 15, 1983 showcasing the opening of Tokyo Disneyland.  This is an "inside" newspaper/flyer for WDP, WED & MAPO.

Oh and Disney launches its own cable channel, it will never work!

Snow?

Here a fun little blurb about the Disneyland (Anaheim) Skyway and a "wind" indecent. Hmmm, Maybe this is why I didn't ride the Skyway too much....

Tokyo Disneyland - Preview Day Ticket & Early Brochure

Let’s take a detour to a far away Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland! Let’s also set the clock back to the beginning with this neat “Preview Day Only” ticket. The Park opened April 15, 1983, so this must have been before that? If that’s a date code in red, I can only guess that “58.3-24” is March 24th, 1983? Maybe Tokyo Magic over at "Meet the Word" blog can tell us, oh and be sure to check out the amazing “Meet the World” blog (link).

From 1981 here’s a nice glossy brochure detailing what was being planned for Tokyo Disneyland.

Lots of fun details in here, from what I can tell, it came out pretty much as planned. After checking out the place in detail (check out Meet the World back posts for a super tour) I really want to visit this park!

In the description of Fantasyland there is mention of the Mickey Mouse Revue. This was a Walt Disney World original attraction (from 1971) that was moved to Tokyo for the opening of Tokyo Disneyland. According to the current TDL website (link) the Mickey Mouse Revue is “closing permanently May 25, 2009”. I hear it is to be replaced with “Mickey's PhilharMagic” I know some folks like that Phihar Magic show, but it really is awful, just another lame 3-D movie along the lines of “Honey I Shrunk the Audience”. What are they going to do with all those audio-animatronics? I know a large theater in Tomorrowland Disneyland Anaheim with a stale 3-D show that would be perfect for the Mickey Mouse Revue!

You can see my other Tokyo Disneyland Ticket posts here (link).
