EPCOT 1982

Well folks, if you are reading this on Saturday, I am on my way to Florida for a fun filled week of Walt Disney World and the other great area attractions. Stay tuned this coming week as the blog continues and will celebrate Disneyland’s 53rd Anniversary in my absence.

Today’s we are looking at some Vintage EPCOT tickets. First up, what appears to be a test or preview ticket? Sure looks modern for 1982. There is a great post on the Disneyanaworld blog about this ticket (link).

Fun opening day Commemorative Ticket from October 1, 1982. The entry stub is missing; these tickets are cheap and easy to come by on EBay. But one with the stub intact is neither easy to find nor cheap…

Here is the fancy chrome envelope that the ticket came in.

Tomorrow: Bonus Sunday’s 1977 Park Guide blowout!

2fer Post / 2 Day Passports & RIDE MONORAIL RED

Today’s post is a 2fer! Two posts for the price of one.

Up first, from July 11 & 12, 1983, this a pair of “2 Day Passports”. It’s hard to believe these are 25 years old, 1983 seems like just yesterday, plus a few thousand days.

The 1983 Guide book does not list the price of the tickets, but notice it says “Value” next to the amounts. On the old ticket books the word “Value” was not the amount you paid, rather it was the total face value of the tickets. I wonder what the actual price of these tickets was.

****** TRIP REPORT *******

I went to Disneyland yesterday to see if the 8:00am to 9:30am light crowd window was still open like it was last Thursday, and it sure was! Maybe it’s the gas prices causing the lighter crowds? After arriving at the main gate at 7:57am, I was thru the turn-style at 8:00am and noticed the New Red Monorail zooming past on the beam.

It was straight to the monorail station for me, I was ready for my first ride on the Mark VII! As I approached the station I saw the old Purple Monorail and figured the new Red Monorail was not going to be in use. A few people boarded old Purple then it took off before I got up to the station.

This is how the station looked when I arrived at the top. The nice gentlemen working the station told me the new Red Mark VII would be there in 8 minutes and I was welcome to board when it arrived!!!!!

Here she is on her way into Tomorrowland and the station.

First I went into the front passenger area, and took a few pictures. Then Captain William stepped in and said “Since there is only you and one other person on this trip, do you want to sit up front with me?” You don’t have to ask me twice!

Nice Captain’s chair! Check out the Chrome Joystick! The front was a little roomier than the sitting area on the old ones, but pretty much the same, I think the glass is just larger. The air conditioning works great up here, although it was still only about 8:15am.

Do you want to ride in the new Monorail? Here you go. Well, it's an amateur video taken with my digital camera, and it only runs ½ way thru the loop, but you get the idea. It’s smooth, quiet and fast.

The submarine dry dock area as seen from the monorail. Fun little three wheeled bikes.

At the risk of repeating myself, the park is empty for the first hour.

If you want girls to wave at you, ride the top deck of the Omnibus and keep taking flash pictures, they love it!

Tomorrow: Since I will be on my way to Walt Disney World, we’ll have some Vintage EPCOT tickets for Saturday’s post.

Disneyland Brochure Comparison

How about a fun Brochure (Flyer?) comparison. Today we have two similar brochures, just a few years apart, which makes it more fun to find the differences.

Up first, from June 1976, it’s the “blue” version. I noticed the Mine Train ride making one of its last appearances…

Now from February 1979, it’s the “brown” version. A neat Space Mountain promo. No Big Thunder Mountain yet, its got about 7 months till its ready. Hey, the map drawing has the old Mine Train still!

Tomorrow: Some 2 Day Disneyland Passports for July 11, 1983.

Today's Good News - July 1982

Extra! The Disneyland Press reports “Today’s Good News” for July 3rd thru July 9th, 1982.

Lots of fun entertainment on tap.

Parade route on the fold out section.

Promotion for Tron!

July 9th 1982 was also the release date of Tron! Oh man, I loved that movie! I have it on VHS, Laserdisc and CED (Select-a-vision discs).

Even better than the movie was the full size arcade game “The Discs of Tron”. I played a machine just like this one for years at the arcade in the Sherman Oaks Galleria, I worked at the Galleria from 1982 to 1984. I must have spent hundreds of dollars on this game (and Dragon Slayer!) I got pretty good at Tron, but there were always a few people better than me!

A couple screen shots of the game. You better watch you step or Sark and the MCP will de-res you then its “game over”!

Tomorrow: A fun Disneyland Flyer Comparison.

Walt Disney World - 1977

Today’s post is in honor of my upcoming trip to Walt Disney World. It’s one week away and now I am getting excited.

Today’s post will focus on 1977, a year that I wish Walt Disney World looked liked when I get there next week. Here is the 1977 Walt Disney World Guide shown next to the Spring 1977 Disneyland Guide. Looks like one of the parks got a larger and nicer book. I guess everything about the Florida Property is larger….

Ok, since you asked, you can view both of these complete guides on this coming Bonus Sunday. It’s fun to compare the two.

A nice 8 Adventure book from 1977, at $7.25 its 25¢ larger than Disneyland’s 11 Adventure Book. Bigger is better?

Here’s a fairly rare book. From September 1976, it’s a full book of “in-park” tickets. These are different than the more common “courtesy” books that were given out by hotels and for promotions. These were bought in the park from the ticket booths and most were used right away.

Since these are good for any attraction (A thru E) why on earth would you use them for anything but an “E” ticket attraction? I like the original Walt Disney World Logo above.

$3.50 for a $4.50 value, a better deal can’t be had. (Weird Florida sales tax breakdown)

In case you were looking for a Disneyland Flyer Comparison post today (like I promised yesterday) check back in a couple of days, I'm having “issues” with the PC that my large flatbed scanner is hooked up to. (Yes the demo copy of Photoshop expired…)

Tomorrow: It's "Today's Good News" at Disneyland - July 1981

Knott's Berry Farm - Chicken Dinner Menu Comparison

Today on Knott’s Monday let’s look at the way prices used rise, slowly…. It seems like prices now a days are going up faster than even the computers can keep track of them. So let’s venture into a simpler time, when prices increase’s were small and took years to take affect.

We’ll be looking at Knott’s Berry Farm’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant Menu’s from 1955 to 1970. This is the cover of the 1955 Edition.

The following are the price pages from 1955, 1959, 1967 and 1970 (I think it’s 1970 or close). I have also scanned the entire menu for each of the four periods; the menu itself is a Souvenir type booklet of the park.

From 1955 - Knott's Chicken Dinner prices: (full booklet available here)

From 1959 - Knott's Chicken Dinner prices: (full booklet available here)

From 1967 - Knott's Chicken Dinner prices: (full booklet available here)

From 1970? - Knott's Chicken Dinner prices: (full booklet available here)

I wonder what $3 gets you there today. The Chicken Dinner is of course still open and I’m sure they do a fine business as well. Looks Yummy. (Link)

Next Week's Knott’s Comparison Monday will continue with the Steak House Menu.

Tomorrow: A fun Disneyland Flyer comparison.
