Your Guide to Walt Disney's Disneyland - April 1977

On yesterday’s post I kind of cheated by asking the date of today’s Guide to Disneyland Post. When I first saw the cover I thought “1968”, so Viewliner Ltd, you were right with me on your thinking of "1966". Terrance T. was closer with his “1973 or 1974” guess, the actual date is April 1977.

The cover sure looks like an older photo. In fact, several of the photo’s in this guide seem much older than 1977, but it's a fun Guide with lots of color!

This Tomorrowland Terrace “in action” shot looks late 1960’s to me.

Great Space Mountain concept art, enjoy your “twisting turning high-speed space journey”. “EXPERIENCE Space Mountain!” Will do.

Fun cartoons and info.

What was this “Guide” for? I am thinking for brochure racks at hotels and travel agencies? I guess it wouldn’t make much sense to pass these out at the park, the freeway map would be of no use since you’re already there!

A couple from 1985

Today's simple post is a couple of passports from 1985. Boy the tickets sure got simple after the A thru E's went away in 1982. These were printed in April 1985.

"Senior Fun Pass" A $5.00 savings!

The cover of "Your Souvenir Guide 1985" 1st edition. Check back on Bonus Sunday for the entire Guide.

Here's a sneak peak at tomorrow's post, can you guess what year it's from?

Fortnight - August 1955 "Chaos in Disneyland"

From August 1955 it’s “Fortnight – Magazine of the Pacific Coast”. This magazine is outright strange. I am not sure who the intended audience was, but I don’t think it would have been me. It’s all black and white except the covers, yet it’s rather “upscale” in its tone and advertising. Oh, and kind of snooty too…

Let’s start with the cover. I am not sure what to say (mom always says, try and say something nice) that’s a beautiful dog, the photo has a nice depth of field, I have no idea how those two gentlemen are and I’ll let you add you own caption.

The index page. A few words about the gents on the cover, still not helping me figure out who they are?

Three whole pages of luscious black and white were used to “review” that new "Disneyland" place, and well, they really aren’t so nice. Read it for yourself and see if you hear a certain “tone” “undoubtedly the crowds would drop off and there would be price adjustments” they were half right!

All of these photos on the following two pages are new to me, having only seen them here. I wish they were in color and better quality, but still fun to look at. That stagecoach running thru the “mud hole” looks completely unfamiliar to me, anyone else?

No American car ads in this magazine, I guess those cars weren’t for people of the “Pacific Coast”? Fun little Triumph TR2, over 100mph and 35 mpg! Hey, it's not parked on the Pacific Coast!!!

The back cover with some great 50’s artwork demonstrating how wonderful France was to visit, “Meet a King”.

I have read most of this magazine and it leaves me with an odd feeling that’s hard to describe. If anyone is interested in seeing one of the other articles listed in the index pages let me know, you might as have a sleepless night too!

Disneyland Hotel

Not sure about others, but blogspot is giving me all kinds of trouble today.... I've got these scans of an old Disneyland Hotel brochure, I hope they actually make it to this post.

Not sure on the date, late 60's / early 70's. For GREAT info on the Disneyland Hotel, check out this great blog: http://magicalhotel.blogspot.com/

The inside open up to a big 11 by 16 map of the hotel and grounds.

No alcohol at the park, no problem, just buzz over on the Monorail and take your pick of cocktail joints!

Sorry for the quick-ish post, check back tomorrow....

Bonus Sunday

Looking back at Tuesday's Space Mountain post (link) here is the entire Vacationland Magazine from the Summer of 1977. This is a fun one; The making of The Rescuers, Wild West Chorus Line (Golden Horseshoe tribute), a super article on San Diego and tons of great ads. Oh and Space Mountain too....

Vacationland Summer 1977 - 50mb

Also from Tuesday's post, the complete Your Guide to Disneyland Fall/Winter 1977/78.

Disneyland Guide Fall/Winter 1977/78 - 11mb

I was going to post the entire WDW Vacationland Spring 1975 magazine from Tuesday's post, but I got lazy so look for it later in the week along with a Vintage Disneyworld Ticket post.

I did however have a few more scans from Thursday's October 1954 TV Guide post. First up how about a review of Peter Lawford's new sitcom "Dear Phoebe", can't say I recall that one?

This TV Guide is from the New York City Zone. I have other 54/55 TV Guides from rural areas that have less than half the amount of stations. Channel 5 WABD the Du Mont network, great info on the "forth" network here (link) thanks "anonymous".

Here's Thursday's line-up. You 7,000 - 10,000 lucky house holds that have a Color TV are in for a "color treat" tonight - TWO Color programs in one night. Maybe this whole "color" thing might just catch on after all?

"A hundred exciting evenings ahead" that's a big promise, I think they ended up delivering it.

Gift-Giver Extraordinaire - Guess the Prize

After watching the debut of the Disneyland TV Show last night, I stayed up late and watched the "Kraft Theatre", then "This is Your Life" with Ralph Edwards. So today's post is a light one.

As part of Disneyland's "30th Birthday Year" these Gift-Giver Extraordinaire tickets we given out, I am guessing you got one as you went thru the main gate. This ticket has not been "Scratched Off". Try and guess the prize. Check back later this afternoon, I will be "scratching off" the prize and posting the results. If you guess correct, I'll split it with you.*

From the back of the ticket, here is the list of possible prizes. Notice this contest is open to persons age 3 and above, what's a 3 year old gonna do with an 85' Buick?

For the Lawyers out there, here is the entire back of the ticket. *Notice the January 31, 1986 expiration date. If we split the prize, we might need a time machine to collect it.

Check back here later for the prize results.

UPDATE:

*********** What a surprise ***************

Well there's a fine "how do ya do"! Oh well, at least we got to see that high tech band printer font telling us "Sorry No Win"... Maybe we'll have better luck next time, I have a few more tickets.

Why Disney changed his mind about TV - TV Guide October 1954

"Why Disney changed his mind about TV". Here's a super TV guide from the week of October 23rd thru the 29th, 1954. October 27th would see the debut of the new TV show "Disneyland". I like how Goofy is combing Walt's hair!

The Article is but three pages long, which seems average for TV Guides of this vintage. Lots of interesting things, the "Lands" are two separate words "Fantasy Land", "Frontier Land" and "Adventure Land" and the forth land is "The World of Tomorrow". Repeatedly referred to as an "Amusement Park" this article correctly predicts a July 1955 opening date.

The 9 million dollar prediction was way off! I have read Walt thru in his own money at the end (and money from ???) to make the final total over 17 Million!

Here's the full page ad Disney placed for the debut of the Disneyland TV show at 7:30pm. Conveniently on the page next to the actual listing. Hmmm, Perry Como is on at 7:45, I'll give this "Disneyland" thing 15 minutes to impress me, otherwise it's Perry all the way!

A great two page article on the up coming Sunday two hour special David O. Selznick's "Lights Diamonds Jubilee" Carried on all four networks (who is the forth one?) and in COLOR! Wow, Jennifer Jones looks oh so stylish and pretty, then for my buddy Richard over at the Viewliner LTD, here's Kim Novak, Zowie, "Lovey" indeed. Grrrrrrr...

Color TV was in its infancy in late 1954. As this historic article states, there were 31 million TV sets the US in 1954, and 7,000 to 10,000 of them were color! And a good number of those were in stores unsold. "Eventually it is predicted, most TV programs will be produced in Color". This issue of TV Guide has 5 programs in color, 5 for the whole week!

The "new" RCA 21 inch Color set is expect to be around $800 to $900. Can you imagine that? The average annual household income in 1954 was around $4500, lets spend 20% of our annual income on a TV???? It's no surprise it took about a decade to get the prices down were people could rationalize getting a color set. We got our first color set in 1970 and none of my friends had one yet, we would all huddle around it on Friday nights to watch the "Brady Bunch - In Color"...

By far my favorite part of the old TV Guides is the TV Teletype sections. I love how the New York section gets first billing, "Hollywood" is continued a few pages later. Liberace is talking of getting married, PR spin at its finest...

I hope you enjoyed this little time travel journey to one of TV's Golden Years.

Angel Fun Pack - May 28, 1967

A simple post today, light on facts because I don't have many. This "Angel Fun Pack" contains 9 tickets good at Angel's baseball games on dates from May 7th thru August 28th, 1967. These were for Magic Kingdom Club members and were not good for admission to the game itself.

Each ticket is the same, just a different date and team that the Angels are playing. These tickets are on my favorite "Castle & Stars" paper, which is correct for 1967. I have no idea what the "Magic Kingdom Club Bonus" was or what was the purpose of these tickets? A giant foam-rubber hand? A seat cushion? A miniature bat? A Dodger-dog? (I guess not on that one!)

The cover of the "Angel Fun Pack". Its got a serial number, but the tickets don't. Globe paper trademark on the lower right and a whimsical odd looking castle on the left.

Inside of the front cover. This is the extent of the details that are printed with this book. The back of the tickets and the back of the book are blank, just like the look on my face....

For the record, The Angels won 5 to 0.

Tomorrow: Week of October 23-29 1954. Anyone want to guess?

Space Mountain - May 27, 1977

Space Mountain is 31 years old today, Happy Birthday! A great attraction that’s still very popular today. Try and get on Space Mountain after the evening parade, good luck, it seems everyone wants one last ride thru space.

First up to help celebrate is a parking lot flyer daring you to “Race thru Space Mountain” on Disneyland's newest attraction. Are you ready for your "journey into the black void of infinite space"?

This is the cover of the flyer, the Space Mountain page is actually the back page.

First “E” tickets with Space Mountain appearing on them, from June 1977. Within a year, the words "Roller Coaster Type Attraction" would be added next to "Space Mountain" on the tickets.

First Disneyland “Your Guide” book with Space Mountain on the cover. Check back Bonus Sunday for the entire guide.

Neat little drawing on the inside cover.

Tomorrowland page of the guide showing the ”new” Space Mountain.

Great cover of the Summer 1977 Vacationland. This edition includes great articles on; Space Mountain, The Rescuers, “Disneyland’s Own Wild West Chorus Line”, Orville Redenbacher’s Popcorn & more. Check back on Bonus Sunday for the entire issue.

Lastly from Spring 1975, Walt Disney World’s Vacationland. Space Mountain of course was in Florida first. A somewhat different ride than Anaheim’s with single in-line seating and two separate tracks within the Mountain. Want to see the whole issue? Sure, I’ll have it on Bonus Sunday as well.

Tomorrow:Take me out to the ball game” in what year? It’s the Angels Vs. White Sox (hint: The Angeles will soak the Sox 5 to 0)
