Walt Disney Home Video 1984 & POC Update

Today's post is something a little different and not a ticket, but it is becoming Vintage.

This is a little booklet full of Walt Disney's Home Video selections from 1983/84. Most title's are available on VHS and Beta, also select titles available on Laser Videodisc and CED Videodisc. I collect 3 of these 4 formats (sorry Beta) with CED being my favorite.

CED (or Select-a-vision) disc's are 12" disc's that play Video and Sound, these are not laser disc's, the players have a micro needle and the disc's have a groove. They are like audio 33rpm LP's except they play at 450rpm's and have 10,000 groove's per inch, they are from 1980 thru 1984, but I digress. (If your interested in CED's check out this web site - CEDMagic.com)

I've posted the front cover and a few select pages of the movie booklet. The entire booklet can be downloaded here:

Walt Disney Home Movies Booklet - 1984 (10mb)

Don't miss the "Fun Center" in the middle of the booklet, but you'll have to download the whole booklet for that....

Tron! Underrated..... I loved it, still do. It's neat on CED (in Stereo!) TEX? I must have missed that one, on purpose.

The Original Freaky Friday! Jodie foster when she looked like a girl....

A few classics's. Old Yeller is the ONLY time I have seen my dad cry.

My work brought me within 3 miles of Disneyland yesterday so I just HAD to stop in and ride Pirates of the Caribbean for its 41st birthday. I guess about 50,000 other people had that idea too!! These are cell phone pictures, pardon the low quality.

Awesome weather at the park, does Disney order it that way?

Here's a warning for you, avoid the Simba Parking Lot! Unless you like to walk A LOT! I was in the far corner of this lot (in Buena Park I think) and they make you walk around the Paradise Hotel and thru Downtown Disney to get to the park. Not too bad on the way in, but OUCH my feet hurt on the way out!

Pirates of the Caribbean - 41st Anniversary

Forty-one years ago today Pirates of the Caribbean opened its doors and has thrilled 10's of millions of people ever since. Still a "must ride" attraction for me, this has to be one of the top Walt Disney attractions of all time.

Today we have a simple post, a May 1967 "E" Ticket. This is the first series of "E" tickets to feature the Pirates of the Caribbean. Also noteworthy is the first appearance of the Enchanted Tiki Room, it opened in 1963, but required separate tickets thru 1966 (See prior Tiki Room Post here).

Here are a few post cards from a neat set that has little duplicate versions of each post card for you to keep. These scans where done with the post cards still in the book, hence the perforation on the left side of each scan.

This is right where I got stuck for 25 minutes last month! (link). "Don't Be Cheeeecken"

Happy 41st! A true classic........

Knott's Berry Farm - The "A" Ticket part 3 - 1977 to 1981

I hope you like Knott's Berry Farm "A" Tickets because this is another mega post! Just in case you missed the the first two parts of this series or if you want to freshen up on the Knott's "A" ticket evolution, here are parts one and two:

Knott's Berry Farm - The "A" Ticket part 1

Knott's Berry Farm - The "A" Ticket part 2

Starting off today this May 1977 "A" ticket has no attraction changes from the May 1976 ticket we looked at in part two, except this is a "Child" ticket and it's an "Adventures Ticket".

Oh, I forgot to mention this in the last post. Starting on the May 1976 ticket Knott's added the letter to the lower right corner on the back of the ticket. Easier to spot for the ticket takers? Fraud prevention? Just being different than Disneyland? I bet it's all of the above.

May 1978 brings some changes to this Adult "A" ticket. The Corkscrew no longer states a minimum height requirement, 8 year-olds rejoice! Knott's Bear-y Tales has traveled down to "B" ticket (Did I mention I LOVED this ride? Did you know it was designed by Rolly Crump?).

A new attraction in Fiesta Village has appeared on the "A" ticket - "Montezooma's Revenge". This "shuttle roller coaster" was one of the first "Shuttle Loopers" and it's still at Knott's today.

This April 1979 has no changes from May 1978, I just dig the vivid Globe paper so much I had to scan it and show it off.

This Adult "A" ticket is from December 1980. Pan for Gold is gone from the tickets. Not the attraction, amazingly I believe it's still there (at a different and smaller location). Pan for Gold probably went to a separate fee at this point. I'm thinking 85 cents was not enough to cover the costs of the staff and souvenir bottle, oh and the gold of course!

The Motorcycle Chase is gone (what a dud!). It's replacement/upgrade the "Wacky Soap Box Racer" was mercifully placed on the "B" ticket from its inception (it was a dud too!). You'll see more about it on the upcoming "B" ticket series.

Moving into Early 1981, Knott's finally downsized there ticket's. Disneyland made this move in 1974. I wonder why Knott's waited so long. Shown here for comparison is the December 1980 "A" ticket from above along with a Early 1981 "A" ticket. I say "early 1981" because these newer sized ticket books do not have a date code, grrrrr!

Here is the Child version of the New ticket size, Early 1981. Knott's has some seriously Vivid Globe paper, they feel nice too (yes, I'm nuts).

The back of the book finally got a new design. I like it, it says 1981 while retaining the "Old West" charm of Knott's Berry Farm. The ticket books seem to stop right here. I have never seen a ticket book newer than these. Does anyone know if Knott's went to a "Passport" system in 1982 like Disneyland did?

Speaking of the Old West, here is a neat brochure from 1975. It's fun! It's also too big for my scanner so you are getting a "Best of" and it's in pieces.

Don' t you just love Concept Art? I do, especially Knott's because it pretty rare.

Here is some concept art of Knott's Bear-y Tales, did I mention I loved this ride??? Check out this to see part of what it really looked like (link). Here's a decent post over at Micechat with a bunch of photo's of this and many of the rides we've been seeing in the "A" Ticket Series (link).

Who knew Knott's had such a rich History in "A" tickets? Next week we start the "B" Ticket series, I'm looking forward too it, I hope you are as well.

Super Bonus Sunday

Here's a neat little brochure produced by Gray Line Tours Co. Disneyland is obviously the focus being the only thing on the cover. But it's filed with all the other great Southern California things to do, all accessible by a diesel bus!

Anaheim is "the one destination". Hey a yellow Magic Mountain Troll!! The Corkscrew at Knott's, I just did a blog that included that one (link)

Nice 72' Fastback Mustang, I hope that kitty doesn't decide to mark it's territory on it!

And because I know you've been missing these little guides, here is the Fall - Winter 1971-72 Guide. I really like the front of this one, this is the style of Disneyland from my childhood.

Complete Fall - Winter 1971-72 Guide - 17mb

And as promised on Friday' post, here is the entire Summer 1959 Vacationland - Disneyland magazine. Great art work inside and the obligatory "Walt's Disembodied Head' can be found on the inside cover....

Complete Vacationland Summer 1959 - 55mb

Tomorrow - Part 3 of the Knott's "A" Ticket series. This will be last of the "A" tickets series, next Monday begins the Knott's "B" Ticket series.

Blogger Cleanup Day

No post today. If you could see my computer desk you would scream! I know I'm screaming!

I'm taking off from the blog today to try and clean/organize my collection's. I have things to post that I don't even know I have, "it's here somewhere"... I'm getting tired of saying that, so it's Cleanup Day!

Check back tomorrow for a Super Bonus Sunday!

Main Box Office Pass

I've been wanting to post this Main Box Office pass ever since I started the blog. Since it's not dated I was waiting to find out some more information. I think I found some info, on EBay of course!

First lets look at my ticket or pass or what would you call it? Exchange it for a 15 Attraction Ticket Book, which I am sure included admission too! "Good any time during ____" Hmmm, odd that this never got printed with a date. Can I still use it? I think so..., but I never would.

Here's the back, this must be where the name of the place giving these goes. I wonder how these worked? "With the Compliments of" does mean free right? Ah, Globe paper, and it's thick card stock too!

A close up of the Castle, just because....

Here are two similar tickets/passes on EBay right now. This one is for a Child and it's OLD, 1955-56. No notation about the size of the "Admission Book", this is from when they only had one book. (EBay item #290198696157).

This one seems more like the one I have. It's a Child version, but it lists the 15 attraction book like mine does. Looking at this date, the 1959-1960 seems to be in the same ink as the "15 Attraction" and "Ticket Book". I wonder why mine has no date? (EBay item #290201844431)

And since we're in 1959 and we need some color, here is the cover to the Summer 1959 Vacationland Magazine. This one has some great "Concept Art" for all the new 1959 attractions, they must not have been finished in time to photograph them when this was published so there are neat drawings. Check back on Bonus Sunday for the full high-res post of this magazine.

That's it for today, see you on the weekend posts.

Santa Fe & Disneyland R.R. Tickets - Part 3

Continuing with the train ticket series, today we a few new things to look at. See parts 1 & 2 also for some neat tickets (link part 1) - (link -part 2).

These first two scans were donated by Major over at Gorilla's Don't Blog. I better find some Disneyland Slides to share with Major!

These are great little tickets, this one is good thru December 31, 1966. These are compliments of "Santa Fe" I wonder how these were distributed? Notice this is only for main gate admission and one train ride. Worth about a buck and half in 1966. I guess you enjoy the "free exhibits" after your train ride or talk your parents into buying tickets in the park!

This one expires December 31, 1968. I am thinking these were only made for children? Nice contrasting of the trains drawings. Oh, look, this one has NO serial number, WOW, that's extra rare!

When major sent me these (THANKS MAJOR!) he wondered how long they were used. Does anyone know? I found this one below currently on eBay (290212395574). It shows a expiration date of December 31, 1960, so they must have had these for at least eight years!

Here's a nice color photo of Walt on the hand cart with the #2 E.P. Ripley in the background. This photo is huge and would not fit in my scanner. Did they sell these in the park? Where was the photo taken??????

I did a post last month last month that included a black and white photo of the Main Street Station. It was damaged at the clock area and the overall photo was aging quickly. See the original photo scan here (link).

Major at Gorilla's Don't Blog and Richard over at Viewliner Ltd both took my damaged photo and were able to fix it. It looks like magic to me. I tried the "Clone tool" and it came out so bad I think my clone did it!

Here is major's version.

Here is Viewliner's version, way lighter, I tried that and it faded to "all white".

Thanks both of you! Amazing work! Someone needs to train me on how to use Photoshop :-)

Audio Visual Souvenir Day

Today we have a nice little Souvenir that I am dedicating to Dave over at Daveland, yesterday he had a stellar post with It’s a Small World 1960's (link).

Yes ladies and gentleman it’s the amazing Sherman Brother tunes, It’s a small world. This recording today is brought to you on a 45rpm vinyl disc recorded by “Walt Disney Music Co.

This has got to be the first and original version (are there other versions?). This is from the 1964-65 New York Worlds Fair. It looks like a mailer of sorts, mailing a breakable record in this flimsy thing seems like you are asking for trouble.

Neat art work on the front, I don’t recall seeing this one anywhere else. I like all the flags merged together, is this Mary Blair’s work?

The back tells about the attraction at the Fair, presented by “PEPSI-COLA”. “A Salute to UNICEF” Do they still mention the UNICEF tie-in?

Cool Rolly Crump design. Why didn’t this go to Disneyland? And better question; where DID it go?

Here is a scan of side one of the 45 record. It’s in remarkable condition given its age (wait a second, I'm that old too!). I bet it was only played a couple of times.

Speaking of playing it, here you go! Due to Blogspot size limits, I recorded side one in two short parts. First here is the English Version, fun stuff!

Now the Swedish version. Hmmm, I think I like this one better!

I’ll make this brief. There is a big controversy about possible updates to It’s a Small world that include adding Disney Characters, and worse yet, removing an entire section and adding a new one that appears to look awful. You can read more about it here:

Knott's Berry Farm - The "A" Ticket part 2 - 1971 to 1976

Part two a is mega post! Lot's of fun stuff to look at here so I just had to post it all. If you missed Part 1, check it our here (link). Remember that Knott's Lettered tickets are valued in the reverse order from Disneyland's. Knott's "A" ticket is the top of the line, whereas Disneyland's "A" ticket is the lowest value.

This "A" ticket is from May 1971 and differs from the February 1970 "A" ticket only in the fact the the attractions no longer have a number next to them that corresponds to the map in the back of the ticket book. The attraction line up is the same as February 1970.

The back of the book has a whole new look that will last only 4 years. It' really just a rehash of the front of the late 1960's ticket book, but hey, dad's pipe is still cool!

Moving to September 1974, the animal farm has grazed its way down to the "B" ticket.

An "A" ticket also from September 1974, this is the "Admit on Child" version.

September 1974 will be the last Knott's ticket books to have this little map on the inside of the back cover. A large number of changes are about to occur and they wont fit on the small amount of space on these little maps.

May 1975 has an all new look to the tickets. Now they are officially copying Disneyland! The Calico Mine Tour is now just a ride. The Log ride is now the Timber Mountain Log Ride. The Calico Railroad and the Haunted Shack have moved down to the "B" ticket, along with Independence Hall, Henry's Auto Livery and The Burro trail (no longer the "Old Miner's Burro Ride") all down to the "B" ticket. They all had to move to make room for....

Two brand new rides in a new "Roaring 20's" land at Knott's for 1975. "The Corkscrew" roller coaster and "Knott's Bear-y Tales". Knott's Bear-y Tales was a favorite of mine, I went thru that attraction about 100 times in the summers of 1975 & 76!

"The Corkscrew" on the other hand scared the living daylights out of me! I got "peer-pressured" into riding it and I was in a cold sweat the whole time in line. But once I rode it I've been hooked on Roller coasters ever since.

Here is a great pair of photo's of "The Corkscrew". The first one is when it was constructed at the Arrow Development plant. The second one shows it as it was in its heyday at Knott's.

This roller coaster is of historic significance, it is the first "modern" coaster to turn upside down (twice yet!) it beat Magic Mountains "Revolution by a whole year. Thankfully, this actual coaster still exists and you can ride it! It' not at Knott's, it's at Silverwood Theme Park in Idaho (link)

In place of the little map that used to be in the back of the book, now we get an ad for the "Good Time Theatre". This ad will remain here until the ticket book sales cease in the early 1980's.

The May 1975 back of the book is totally new, and very nice too if I say so myself.

What is the "Adventure Club" you must be asking? It was very similar to Disneyland "Magic Kingdom Club" (a mega post MKC series is coming in April) where corporations would get group type discounts. Here is a Adventures Club Membership Card for Lockheed Employees'. Expires December 31, 1976!

Heading into May 1976 we see that "The Corkscrew" has a minimum height required, I guess your height didn't matter in 1975? Two MORE new attractions for the "Roaring 20's" land. The famous "Parachute Jump" and the "Motor Cycle Chase"

The "Parachute Jump" is the only time in my life my knee's actually started to go weak and my hands turned white from holding the railing so hard. Too high, too out in the open, and the darn things used to go up twice!!!!!! The tower is still at Knott's but the Parachute's are thankfully gone, however the rotating observation room is still there. "Motor Cycle Chase" was a lame attempt at the old "Steeple Chase" idea, but very silly and not much fun.

A super rare "Bicentennial Bonus" free ticket to Independence Hall; only for Adventure Club members. I really like this ticket.

And last today, this is the back of the basic book (for you Non-Adventure Club members) from May 1976. I'm not so sure about the "watermelon" colors, 1976 seems more "earth tones" to me.

Wow, that was a looooong post. Fun for me, I hope for you too... I'm off to Disneyland today, so possibly no post tomorrow, but you never know...
