The "C" Ticket - Part 3 the late 1960's

A "Castle" paper "C" Ticket from May 1967. Peter Pan Flight, Alice in Wonderland, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and Snow White have all found there way down from the "D" to the "C" by 1967. For the most part (except poor Alice who gets bumped around a bit), the "Dark Rides" will remain on the "C" ticket until the end in 1982. Swiss Family Tree House is gone from the "C", sliding down to the "B", where it also stays until 1982.

May 1968 Adult "C" Ticket. Tomorrowland jets are gone, Moved up to the "D" Ticket. Why was it still on the "C" ticket above from May 1967? The old jets were long gone by then, with the new ones opening in about a month, odd.. Fantasy land is really loaded up now, with 8 attractions, adding the Mad Tea Party and the Fantasyland Theatre, both upgraded from the "B" ticket in 1967.

Notice
the addition of Main Street: Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. This was the first appearance on a lettered ticket. Before this, I believe tickets for Mr. Lincoln were sold separately, for adults that is, it appears kids (child and junior) got in for free.

This is a Junior "C" Ticket also from May 1968, notice it does not have any Main Street - Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. Both the Junior and Child ticket books from 1968 to around 1972/73 did not have Mr. Lincoln on the "C", but they actually had separate tickets in the front of the book, see next scan after this "C" ticket.

From the same ticket book of May 1968, this is the special ticket for Juniors to see Mr. Lincoln. Disneyland could have just put Mr. Lincoln on the "C" ticket like they did for adults. They obviously wanted to make this a special event for children and these tickets make it feel special indeed. (Blogger Side Note: My first trip to Disneyland was in 1968, I was 3, it is also my first memory, that's right my very first memory in life is screaming my fool head off when Mr. Lincoln stood up, I ran for the doors and started pulling at the curtains, screaming and crying the whole time, my dad had to pick me up and get out of there quick. FYI - I love it now, I wish Mr. Lincoln would come back)

Also from the same May 1968 Ticket book also has this neat little ticket to Adventure Thru Inner Space. Maybe I'm up too late, but does the wording about how to use this ticket seem confusing? (note the Castle paper ticket, it was mixed in a book with the rest of the tickets being Globe paper!)

This next ticket I do not have a date for. These were sold with General admission tickets, when you were to cheap to by the whole ticket book. Looks like you still got Mr. Lincoln and Adventure Thru Inner space for free.....

Last for today is a undated copy of a Junior general admission ticket with the Mr. Lincoln ticket attached. Notice the serial #!!! This is not my ticket, I wish it was. This copy is from a private source, and the ticket itself has probably never left Disneyland.......

The "C" Ticket - Part 2 the early 1960's

Starting off the 1960's we have this nice yellow (or is it goldenrod?) Childs Admission "C" Ticket from June 1960. Tomorrowland is once again represented on the "C" Ticket, with the TWA Rocket to the Moon and Tomorrowland Autopia back down from the 1959 the "D" ticket. Fantasyland also got it's Autopia back from the 1959 "D". Frontierland lost the Mine Trains, upgraded to Natures Wonderland and the "E" Ticket! And a moment of silence for the permanent loss of the Conestoga Wagons......

Back to basic grey, this June 1961 "C" Ticket is almost identical to June 1960 as far as attractions. The only difference is the "Rocket to the Moon" no longer sports "TWA". Was Douglas signed on by June 1961? How come the tickets from 62' to 66' never said "Douglas Rocket to the Moon"?

Notice the The Main Street Shooting Gallery on the 1961 "C" ticket above. This will be its last appearance on any ticket, it will close in January 1962. I have attempted to find a photograph of this attraction and have come up empty handed. Nothing can be found on the Internet. I checked Micechat, folks have asked for photo's but no one has found any.

From some research I did, I see it was inside the Penny Arcade. Here is a Main Street map from the big 1957 Disneyland brochure:

And here is a scan from a daily main gate handout from August 1961:

Therefore I have to conclude it did exist, I wonder why there are no photo's? If anyone has a picture of the Main Street Shooting Gallery or even if you ever saw it in person, please contact me.

October 1962 finds this "C" ticket minus the Main St. Shooting Gallery of course. Tomorrowland Autopia is gone, but Fantasyland Autopia is still there? Dumbo is gone, not on any ticket? Keel Boats gone, off to the "B" ticket. Indian War Canoes are gone too, where did everything go in October 1962, first round of refurbs? Oh, and speaking of Shooting Gallery's, the New Adventureland Big Game Shooting Gallery is open for business!

It's June 1963 and the Tomorrowland Autopia, Dumbo and the Indian War Canoes are back (whew!)... The "Swiss Family Treehouse" is already down from the "D" Ticket, is the novelty already wearing off by 1963? (it never did for me, I miss it so bad!).

And just because I love these little "Ways to Enjoy" Disneyland Ticket pamphlets, here is a cool one from 1964.

Notice the 15 book of tickets isn't JUMBO and more, it's now just Deluxe!

$2.00 each night to see these greats of the big band era, I would go each night!

Next post, The "C" Ticket - Part 3 the late 1960's. In this post we will also take a close look at the Mr. Lincoln Exhibit ticketing.

The "C" Ticket - Part 1 the 1950's

Today's post will be a little different. I will confess upfront as to why; my collection seems to be missing a few "C" tickets! Don't get me wrong, I got hundreds of "C" tickets, just none from 1955 to 1957!!!!! I have requested a little help from a couple of other Disneyland ticket collectors, I hope to hear back from them soon. Also, if ANYONE has a "C" ticket from 1955 to 1957, please scan that baby and send it to my blog....

Alright, with that out of the way, lets take a look at my first "C" ticket for the series. It's a June 1958 "C" ticket from the "Jumbo 15" book. This is when there were "A thru D" tickets, so this "C" ticket gets you the second best group of attractions in 1958. Looks like the "C" covered most of Fantasyland.

Let's side track for a moment and look at Disneyland's "New" book with 15 tickets in it. They called it the "Jumbo 15" and let me tell you, it really was Jumbo! Jumbo sized that is! The booklet itself measures 6" x 3 3/8" with this "C" ticket at 5" 3 3/8". I believe this were only sold from June of 1957 to June of 1958.

Here is a neato handout from April 1958:

"Mom, Dad, Children, EVERYBODY! Have MORE FUN for LESS MONEY with DISNEYLAND TICKET BOOKS" Wow, I sure do dig that family! I love Dad's Pipe! Why wouldn't you want the Jumbo Book? Until you try and fit in your pocket!

"The Happiest Place on Earth" indeed...

Back of each Jumbo Book, pretty aren't they?:

Now for June 1959. This was from the first "A thru E" booklet, so there was a major realignment of the attractions on the lettered tickets, some that would not last but a few months as we will see in the 1960's tomorrow.

This ticket is GREEN, just like the "E" Ticket! It's because it is a "Junior" ticket, they got different colors for Junior and Child tickets on and off throughout the run of lettered tickets. No Tomorrowland rides, and the only thing on this "C" ticket and on the 1958 "C" ticket is the "Mike Fink Keel Boats".

Also notice the "Rainbow Caverns Mine Train" it's not in "Natures Wonderland" yet, at when it does, it's straight to "E" ticket!

That does it for 1950's "C" ticket. I apologize for not having 55, 56 or 57 "C" tickets. One of my goals with this blog is to try and gather as much information about these tickets as possible. So please, all contributions are welcome.

Grad Nite 82!

Here's some funky stuff. Grad Nite 82! Grad Nite originated at Disneyland in 1961 for local area students. Fascinating stuff about it over at Wikipedia.

In 1982, $11 got you unlimited rides and attractions, except not ALL of them - according to Wikipedia "Disney has adjusted its policies on which rides to open. Attractions such as Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln have been closed, as students will use them for romantic getaways or to sleep. Generally, the rides that involve travel across water have been closed."

Oh boy, the dress code, I believe this has changed also, denim was NOT allowed in 1982! And, "Hold your own ticket"!

Front cover of the special Grad Nite brochure. It really does look like that, it was all blurry before I scanned it. For the record, much of the early 80's was blurry and fuzzy like this, I know, I was there!

Sister Sledge! "We are Family".... LOL! Tommy Tutone! This is killing me!

Two who pages of what we were supposed to look like having fun on Grad Nite. These seniors look kind of college age don't they?

My School is on there, is yours??????

Coming Monday - The "C" Ticket series. I've been sorting thru them, these are getting really fun now, it's all up town from here!

The Skyway Challenge

Short Saturday Night post, non-ticket related.

This is a scan from a little snapshot I got off eBay several years back. Not sure how good the colors are or how clear the focus for that matter. But it does reveal some nice construction in Tomorrowland. Is this the "New Tomorroland 67"? Anyone know more about a date on this or do you have views from other angles?

The other thing I noticed in this picture, and it brings back a few scary memories, look at the cable on the right, see how much it's drooping? As much as I would love the skyway to still be in Disneyland, honestly, I probably wouldn't ride it! But I sure would love to see it moving thru the Skyways of Disneyland...

The "B" Ticket - Part 4 the 1970's

Now for the final "B" ticket blow-out! This "Complimentary" "B" Ticket is from May 1971. Complimentary A thru E tickets were just the regular ticket, but have some extra printing. They got those cool Stars on the right, the wording "Complimentary" and the famous "X" serial number sequence. I hear these were given to CM's since they could get in the park for free, but they still needed tickets to the attractions. I think these were also given away at hotels/motels, and at the park because? If you know more about these "Star" tickets and how they were used, please let me know!

Comparing this "B" to the 1969 one, you will notice the Motor Boat Cruise is back!

This September 1973 "B" ticket is the last of this larger size. Motor boat is gone again! (See 9/75 below for more Motor Boat mysteries) and Alice in Wonderland has moved up to the "C" ticket, making for a really light "B" ticket. Nice rusty paperclip mark huh?

New size appears in 1974! This "B" is from June 1974. The new size is much smaller, measuring 4 3/16" x 2". (my scans don't show the actual size, not sure how to do that!) This new size is NOT my favorite, you'll see as we get to the CDE tickets, there are so many attractions that the fonts get really small! You can barley read them! Plus they just don't "feel" as nice. This "B" got Alice back, and the Motor Boat Cruise is back again!

OK, here is a "B" ticket from September 1975. MOTOR BOAT CRUISE is gone, AGAIN!!!! I also scanned the back of the ticket book to show the Motor Boat Cruise is not listed!!! Where did it keep going? I know it's gone now (extreme sadness), but what happened over the years, did they just shut it down for entire seasons? NOTICE: The $$$ amount of the tickets are gone, no more 25 cents....

And here is a nice Trio of "B"'s dating from the top down; June 1977, September 1978 and May 1979. You can see for 1978 Fantastyland Theater and the Motor Boat Cruise disappear, then reappear in 1979!!! Also notice the 1978 ticket is good for "One Guest any age" not sure why they did these "any age" tickets and it seems they only appear in 1978. Main Street Cinema is off to the "A" ticket and we now have the BOTH shooting galleries on the"B" (well, not in 1978!)

Here is a close-up of the 1978 "B" ticket. The Globe paper seems extra bold on this one, must have been a new batch!

And just because it's so darn pretty, this May 1977 Knott's "B" ticket. Boy did these hold up over time, clean and vivid, just like new! I'm heading to the "Haunted Shack"!

Well, that's it for the"B" series, that was really fun! Next week - the "C" ticket! And check this weekend for some cool odd stuff.....

The "B" Ticket - Part 3 the late 1960's

Setting the way back machine to 1966, the "B" ticket has a new size that will remain thru 1973, they are now 5" x 2 7/16".

First up today, we have a Trio of "Castle Paper" B tickets. I call it Castle Paper because it has little Castle's as the watermark, they are not the usual "Globe Ticket Company" paper. I lay awake at night pondering why they chose not to use Globe paper during part's of 1966, 67 and 68.... I'm sure it bothers you too!

I don't have an exact date for this first one, but it's got to be 1966 since I have never seen the Castle paper prior to 1966. It has the "Art of Animation", so it's got to be before 1967. I think they shut down most of Tomorrow land in late 1966 for construction of the "New Tomorowland 67" (my favorite version of Tomorrowland, by far).

Other changes from 1965's "B" ticket; Tomorrowland Jets are gone (Already removed for the new Tomorrowland?, Did you know they changed the name of the "Astro-Jet" to "Tomorrowland Jets" sometime between 1963 & 65? Why did they change the name a few years before they changed the ride?), The "Mad Tea Party" makes it's first appearance on the "B", the Keel Boats are gone, not even on the "C", and the Swiss Family Tree house was bumped down from the "C" to the "B".

Now as we saw with the "A" ticket series, The "New Tomorrowland 67" has no room for low line "A" and "B" tickets! This May 1967 "B" has no Tomorrowland Attractions, you will need "C" tickets and above to pay for all that new stuff! The Keel Boats are back!

By Late 1967, the Motor Boat Cruise is gone (briefly to nowhere?), Fantasy Theater is gone too? Keel Boats are gone off the "B" and back on the "C". This "B" ticket is Kind of "light" on attractions....

May 1968 finds the "B" ticket back on the warm and wavy Globe Paper, the paper that will continue on the A thru E tickets till 1982. The Motor Boat Cruise is Back! Sleeping Beauty's Castle is back (with an 's now!) I told you she'd be back.... And the Mad Tea Party is gone having spun its way back up to the "C" ticket.

Once again, the Motorboat Cruise is gone, and not on the "C" either, was the ride closed for long periods of its run? This May 1969 "B" ticket is down to four attractions now!

And from April 1970, a nice "B" ticket, notice the color is a little different from the one above. Notice anything else odd??????

Yes, I have LOTS of KNOTT'S tickets too!!!! I love this stuff!!!

Tomorrow we have the finale of the "B" Series, The "B" Ticket - Part 4 the 1970's!

Tokyo Disneyland

Today lets take a small detour from the "B" ticket series, a detour all the way to Japan!

Tokyo Disneyland (TDL) has always intrigued me. I hear it is exceptionally clean and well maintained. It opened April 15th, 1983 and was the first Disney park build outside the United States. Oddly, The Oriental Land Company owns the property and they license the theme from the Walt Disney Company.

While I understand TDL is very much like the original Disneyland it does have some substantial differences. The oddest difference to me is the entrance. Main Street is completely enclosed, which helps for bad weather, but it looks rather strange.

The entire area is called "World Bazaar" and it is indeed Bazaar inside:

Ok, now to my Ticket related part of this post. From the opening in 1983 thru at least 1999 TDL sold tickets the old fashion way, in ticket books!! I know in 2006 they no longer had them, but when they stopped I don't know. If anyone knows exactly when the ticket book sales stopped, please let me know.

This TDL ticket book is really fun to look at. I do not know the year, as they do not have a date code like the old Disneyland Tickets. It is missing the "E" ticket (of course!) but the book is still rare. I have only seen these on EBay a couple of times. I like how they called it the "Big 10" ticket book, just like the old days at Disneyland Anaheim! Nice art work of the park

The back is kind of plain, but lots of fun smiles from the Disney crew!

And just because we are in the middle of the "B" ticket series, here is the "B" ticket from TDL! Notice it's "Westernland". I guess there is no literal translation of "Frontierland" so they choose something that better describes the "land".

Next post, we return to the "B" Ticket - Part 3 the late 1960's...

The "B" Ticket - Part 2 the early 1960's

Before we get started today, lets look at how the ticket alignment changed during the 60's. In 1959, when the ticket books with the new "E" tickets were introduced, the "E" ticket was the longest ticket in the book, measuring 5 1/2" x 2 7/16" (same height as money$$$), and the "A" ticket was the shortest at just 4" x 2 7/16".

Some time after 1966 and at around the same time Walt's signature went away from the Welcome cover sheet (right around the same time he passed away, coincidence?) the order was reversed. Now the "E" ticket is the shortest and the "A" ticket is the longest! My theory; Since "E" tickets were obviously the most popular, it became cost effective to reduce the length and have the "E" tickets use less paper.

To show the order and how it was reversed, here are two nice ticket books. First is from June 1963 and the other is from April 1973, just before the whole ticket book got shrunk down (a post subject for another day...)

Now with the size thing out of the way, lets look at some of the "B" tickets from the first half of the 1960's, all these in today's post are the shorter ones, 4 1/4" x 2 7/16".

First up from June 1961, several changes from a year or so ago; Main Street Cinema has been added, moved up from the "A" ticket. The Astro-Jet was demoted from the "C" ticket and is now on the "B" ticket. Oh, and the "Art of Animation Exhibit" is new to the "B" ticket too, added to the "B" in June of 1960. And the Motor Boat Cruise is back after a total disappearance.

Next up from June 1962, this Child "B" ticket has a pinkish color, some (not all) child tickets were different colors, but that's a post for another day too. This ticket has almost the same attractions as the June 1961 ticket above, except Sleeping Beauty Castle is gone, kicked down to the "A" ticket! She'll be back!

Help me out with this next one, from June 1963, it's got some weird stuff. A normal change, addition of Mike Fink Keel boats, moved down from the "C"; But wait, the Midget Autopia is gone, seems to not be on any ticket after 1962? Odd since it was there till 66' (I think).

OK here is the really weird part on this one. The Mickey Mouse Club Theater is gone, replaced by "Jack and the Bean Stalk"? Is that the year it came out? "Summer Only, Last show starts at 2:00pm" and in the back of the ticket book, it also reads "Papotin's Revue Begins 3:00pm" What was all this about? Does anyone have more detail, some pictures?

***** UPDATE ***** I found out what Papotin's Revue was! From another blogspot blog, "Then Walt DISNEY himself became interested in entrusting André to put on a stage show at Disneyland (California) during the Summer of 1963: Papotin's Revue delighted thousands of spectators through 518 performances." Someone PLEASE explain the Jack in the Bean Stalk thing, was that even a Disney Movie/Cartoon?

And from when I was only one month old, June 1965. Pretty much the same as June 1963 except the "Jack and the Bean Stalk" thing is now called "Fantasy Theatre" something I remember very well, I spent many a hot 1970's summer afternoon in there watching Pluto and Mickey and staying cool!

And just to see if you are paying attention, does this belong in this post?

Yes, it's a WDW "B" ticket, from June 1973. It does not fit in this post, but it's pretty and I like it so here it is.....

Tomorrow we take a little detour from our "B" series and head to "Tokyo" Disneyland!
