March 24, 1971 - Day at Disneyland

It’s March 24th, 1971 and you’ve just been handed this flyer at the parking lot entrance. You have two wonderful ways to enjoy Disneyland. IMPORTANT: you better read this thing!

1. Personally Guided Tours. I’ve never done it. I’m not sure about 1971, but in the older Vacationland magazines the guided tours seem to be available on the off season only, which makes sense. Now they run them all year? How can they do a tour on days when there are 60,000 “guests” at the park?

2. Ticket Book Specials. “Maximum Family Enjoyment” folks, it could on happen at Disneyland.

A slightly used, kinda worn, September 1970 Junior Ticket Book, $5.45 for 15 adventures, you do realize that’s an $11.75 value; check the chart above, its true.

Spring Fling ’71. Coming April 3rd (1971) - See: Gladys Knight and the Pipps (go ahead, start singing it, "He's leaving, leaving on that midnight train to Georgia); Dawn with Tony Orlando. It wasn’t "Tony Orlando and Dawn" yet (ready; Whoa tie a yellow ribbon 'round the ole oak tree it's been three long years do ya still want me) Great prizes too. A PINTO, even hot combs!!!

For those of you who like to know wha the park hourswere 38 years ago (Progressland) here you go.

This receipt is dated March 24, 1971, it appears to be for two items and ¢18 tax (5.15 percent?). Department 89? I see sleepless nights ahead trying to figure out what this was for.

This last little item came with the stuff above, its  Me-n-Eds Pizza - Order 119.  I like the “It’s a small world” reference.

Dixieland At Disneyland Ticket Brochure - 1961

Taking a look at an old gate flyer, this “Two Wonderful Ways to Enjoy Disneyland" flyer is from the Summer of 1961.

This flyer was promoting the second annual Dixieland at Disneyland! Matterhorn over at Stuff from the Park has a ton of these type of flyers, he’s got the one printed just before this one (link) which is odd since it’s promoting the same thing just with different artwork. If Matterhorn already posted this one I couldn’t find it so this is either new to blogosphere or I just didn’t see over there… Also see Matterhorn’s Dixieland 1961 program here (link).

There were ticket purchasing decisions to make in 1961 just like in 2011. The only difference now is that you have to decide to cash in your 401k or your kids college fund to buy a round of tickets for the entire family.

Three Wonderful Ways to Enjoy Disneyland - 1961

Here's a super vintage Disneyland parking lot brochure from 1961.  The "tri-fold" design was introduced in 1961 and this is version 3.  You can see versions 4 and 5 over at Stuff from the Park (link).

This is a "Special Season" version with special tickets choices. The guided tour is a few cents cheaper than summer season.  The "Special Season" ticket books were full of "any ride" tickets just like Magic Kingdom Tickets (I'll have to check and see if I have any of this 1961's my collection). And the "Passport" with unlimited rides was also available.

The best part of this little brochure is the on the spot accounting. It appears our party had three adults and two children. It also appears they either didn't but the ticket books and paid full price for the attractions OR they were doing the math to see if they saved money!  Passports for everyone would cost $25.50 so lets hope they chose wisely.

Looks like my average lunch at Disneyland.
