TV Guide - February 11-17, 1961

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today’s we’ve got TV Guide from February 11-17, 1961. In case you missed my previous TV Guide/Disneyland posts, you can visit them here: Why Disney Changed his mind about TV October 1954 (link) and the four issue series “Disney Album” from January 1955 (link).

Dancing in Disneyland

The “Bell Telephone Hour” was presenting a special show this week “The Sounds of America” filmed and videotaped entirely on location at Disneyland!

Here’s the page that shows the listing for Friday night at 9:00pm. The Bell Telephone Hour was in Color since its TV debut in 1959. Good thing the Twilight Zone (late into Season one) is on at 10:00pm, there's an excellent performance by Jack Klugman that you won’t want to miss.

This looks like a spectacular show. Good luck finding it. A search on the web came up pretty dry, but I’m working on a lead. If anyone has a copy or can get one, let me know.

My favorite TV Teletype’s, this is the “New York” version found in the front of the guide. Hollywood is in the back.

Here are a couple nice photos of what ladies looked like in 1961. The articles are kind of dry, let me know if you have an interest in the rest of the articles and I’ll post them later.

The TV Teletype “Hollywood” version has lots of fun information. Gunsmoke will expand to an hour; it was a half hour show at first?

Radio & TV News - June 1958

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Continuing on with the "one page" articles, from June 1958 its Radio & TV News. This is Disneylands second appearance in this magazine, see my previous post of the August 1956 issue here (link).

Lots of neato analog equipment. How much do you want to bet none of this equipment is still at the park?

Also from a previous post an Altec Lansing ad from Architectural Digest - May 1959.

The Sphere - July 1955 / Ice Capades - 1957

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today’s post is one of those magazine articles that has lost the rest of its magazine! And to make matters worse, its only one page. At least it’s a big page as this must have been a Life size magazine. From July 30, 1955 its The Sphere Magazine. “The Sphere was a British magazine published by London Illustrated Newspapers" (Wiki-link).

Do you suppose £6,000,000 was $17 million dollars in 1955? If not, then they are off on their estimate just like everyone else was. Here’s a high resolution scan (20mb link) for you to gaze at while enjoying your tea and crumpets.

Did you notice the odd “Creatures of Walt Disney’s imagination” in the lower right photo in the above article? They of course were borrowed from the Ice Capades. Here’s the cover to the 1957 Ice Capades program.

7-8. “By Special Permission of Walt Disney”. Disneyland

Who is “Little Patti” and why is she wearing Dorothy Gale’s dress???

Looks like fun?

The American Weekly - March 1960.

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today's post is going to be a self-guided tour because I'm tired after having an insanely wonderful time at Knott's Berry Farm yesterday for 14 hours! It was an amazing event, topped off by hanging out with the extraordinary bloggers club! It doesn't get any cooler than spending the day at a theme park with all my fellow bloggers - that rocked! Oh yeah, also present were; Chris Merritt, Rolly Crump, Tony Baxter and I saw some guy named Bob Gurr!!!

The American Weekly - March 1960. Yes its only a half page article!

The Coca-Cola Bottler - October 1965

Welcome to Magazine Monday. From the “this just in” department we’ve got a fun look at Coca-Cola and Disneyland. From October 1965 it’s The Coca-Cola Bottler magazine. I guess you’d call this a “trade” magazine, it certainly was not for the general public.

Diana sure is pretty, a true 1960’s California girl. That nice big “First Fabulous Decade” logo is fabulous isn’t it? For all you “opening day conspiracy theorists" please note; And it was on July 18, 1955, that Walt Disney promised the opening day crowd “Disneyland will continue to grow as long as…” I thought Walt said that on July 17th?

The Coca-Cola Suits visit Disneyland!

Ok, what’s wrong with this picture? This is a great magazine, but between the July 18th flub and this goof they have lost all creditability. Even when corrected (link) its still an odd angle that I don’t think you can get today.

Are you ready for some vintage advertisements? I hope you like Coke, because that's really all this magazine is, one big ad for Coke and its related vendor products.

This colorful Du Pont sure looks refreshing. “Give me a Tab. A Tab? I can't give you a tab unless you order something”.

Westinghouse introduces its Special Location Stack-Type Automatics and blue dress lady looks thrilled.

We’re really getting into Dispenserland now. These fountain heads are worth a small fortune today; I’d love one on my kitchen counter (working of course).

Beautiful artwork on this Cornelius Company ad. These machines aren’t coin operated but man do they look super cool.

Cavalier made Coke machines in all types of shapes and sizes.

Beverage-Air made these interesting coolers. Although I was born in 1965, these are alien to me. When I was a little kid I don’t recall seeing these in “homes, offices & waiting rooms”.

The back of the magazine features, what else, a Coke ad! I don’t know about you, but I have a serious craving for an ice cold Coke because “things go better with Coke”.

Show Business Illustrated - October 31, 1961

Welcome to Magazine Monday. From October 31, 1961 its Show Business Illustrated. Judy Garland graces the cover.

Did you ever notice how much Judy loved those funky blazers with the weird length sleeves, here she is in a classic scene with Frank and Dean and a similar Blazer.

A super seven page article on Disneyland. No particular reason or theme for the article, just good old Disneyland promotional stuff.

Isn’t this a great photo! Anybody want that ’61 banner in the background? Does anyone actually have it?

Ice cream lady has too many hats and hand full of Vintage Disneyland Tickets!!!

Balloon hawkers flourish in Disneyland”…

Horseless horse opera”…

Mickey still looks like he is in need of some plastic surgery, he’s better than the 1955 version (the “rat” suit) but he still looks a little “off”.

Another fantastic photo, the kids are loving it!

JUDY – also got a seven page article, so for you Garland fans, here’s the whole thing.

Not too many advertisements in this magazine, this one is for the magazine itself.

Check out the small size of this tape recorder! No mention if it converts your recordings to MP3’s.
