Ford Times - may 1962

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today we’ve got a second look at the Ford Times magazine. We first saw this “little” magazine with its September 1960 issue posted back in February (link). Today’s issue of the Ford Times is from May 1962. I hope you are ready to see 1962 through watercolors. The great cover painting is by Rex Brandt and shows the San Diego Harbor.

The inside cover has this beautiful watercolor painting by Millard Sheets.

This issue's Disneyland article is fairly short, but certainly a reflection of the times. “What Khrushchev Missed in Disneyland”. The article steers clear of exactly why Khrushchev missed going other than to blame “authorities” who were worried about his security.

Kyra Petrovskaya (say that five times fast) tells about what Khrushchev would have seen from her Russian perspective. Turns out she and many other Russians are Tom Sawyer fans, I guess that’s why we get these excellent paintings of Tom’s Island by Ralph Hulett.

Some interesting observations about more adults than children. Possible political correctness violation where she describes the various types of the guests at Disneyland, again I suppose it was a sign of the times.

No advertisements in the Ford Times but there are a few more spectatular articles with more amazing art work. This 5 page article is about smart porpoises and Marineland!

The paintings (and sketches) by James Warren really pickup the vibe of early Marineland.

Flipper singing in a bow-tie!

More Marineland goodness on the inside of the back cover. I can’t find anything about James Warren on the internet, too bad, I really like his style.

Knott’s Berry Farm didn’t want to get left out, here’s the secret recepe for Mrs. Knott’s Old-Fashion Pioneer Beef Stew. For you seafood folks, try the Fish Ka-bob with Caper Sauce from the Sea Shanty.

Red Skelton, Danny Kaye, Marlene Dietrich – you know “There’s a lot to Las Vegas”.

Frank Sinatra and Edie Adams, did things that happened in Vegas stay in Vegas back in 1962?

Algo Magazine - October 1964

Welcome to an international version of Magazine Monday, or "Bienvenido a una versión internacional de Revista el lunes". From October 1964 its Algo Magazine, direct from Barcelona. I don’t speak Spanish (the internet did the above translation) so you are on your own with the vintage text in this post.

I see a phone number and something about subscriptions rates.

Disneylandia” interesting choice of photos in this article.

Could these two kids be less excited? I like the Main Street Station shot. Doesn’t the Gully Whumper look swell on the Rivers of America? Imagine the PR you ring out of bringing the Gully Whumper back to the river for the 55th anniversary. Get Fess Parker involved, re-release the old Keel Boat movies, and sell tons of Davey Crocket related merchandise. Are you listing George?

These are nice photos also. Too bad the inside pages are basically news print on cheap paper!

At least this color beauty was on the back cover. The flight circle looks empty, Cox Pilot must be on a break. The Yachtsmen are nowhere to be found either, but their little stage sure is cool. Its amazing to me that the hydraulic mechanism that moves the Rockets Jets is the exact same mechanism that's still up on top of the PeopleMover platform, I’m sad that it’s now a joke.

No Advertisements, so here's a couple of fun articles. Monorails in Japan? Those things are ugly; didn’t they have a Japanese equivalent of Bob Gurr?

Hmmm, this submarine design looks vaguely familiar?

In the text there's something about 1,000 meters, so there must not be too many similarities to Disneyland’s Submarines, we all know those only submerge 500 meters.

McCall's - January 1955

Welcome to Magazine Monday. From the “this just in” department we’ve got a great vintage look at Disneyland (the concept) in the McCall’s January 1955 issue. Fun cover art work, where’s Curious George?

Looks like there were two covers published for the same issue, Grace Kelly is lovely, but I like the cartoon people better.

This Disneyland article really should be called “Fantasyland at Disneyland” since it’s the only land that's shown. You do get a flood of early concept art, some attractions made it, some didn’t. Those “mining carts” in Snow White are amazing. Going “into” Monsto’s mouth seems better than been “ejected”, this concept works better on a Brer Mountain. You can download/view the un-cropped, un-scanned file of each page here: (page 1) – (page 2).

The huge table in Wonderland would have been cool! The duck-bumps ride looks cool too; Magic Mountain had this and called it El Bumpo! Sweet diagram/fly thru of Peter Pan! You can download/view the un-cropped, un-scanned file of each page here: (page 3) – (page 4).

Do-it-yourself mania has hit the United States. Where’s Waldo?

Generally I like to feature full page color advertisements, but let’s make an exception here. Is this the same “Wonderful Wizard of Bras” that graced Main Street at Disneyland in 1955? Like there could even be another “Wonderful Wizard of Bras”! The Wizard is a festive looking little fellow. That bras is, well, oh my, the phrase “you’re gonna take someone’s eye out with that thing” comes to mind. “Press your Bra”? Not going there.

Simpler is Better”… America in 2009 is ready for some simple, basic, straight forward advertisements, don’t you think? Look how simple this ad is, yet I bet its making you want Hunts Catsup & fried shrimp!

Crisco is digestible, who knew?

These are the coolest matches I’ve ever seen. On a side note, do they still sell Ohio Blue Tip matches; I can’t find them in the stores. Those red "Diamond" matches stink.

Pretty colors.

Nice fitted percale sheets… “They’re Combspun".

Hey, that box looks just like the box WordPerfect 5.1 (for DOS) came in, seriously.

Coloroto Magazine - September 5, 1955

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Let’s set the clock way back to September 5, 1955 for a special edition of Coloroto Magazine, from the Sunday News - New York’s picture newspaper. The cover features Suzan Ball (cousin of Lucille Ball) and Richard Long. Suzan was married to Richard for just over a year, sadly she died of cancer in August of 1955.

The Disneyland article is only two pages long, but it is the centerfold and makes up for it with seven color photos. I’ve never heard that Tomorrowland was supposed to be “1996”. “Alice in Wonderland” in 1955? “Colorfotos by Globe

Here’s each page in higher resolution. Play “find the changes in the bricks” (link) – its fun!

The inside cover talks about the cover photo and some local sports stuff.

They were into “Before and After” comparison photos even in 1955!

I can play "Before and After" too, here's the same street scene from Google maps 2009! Notice on the 110 Building (first on the left), some of the 1892 elements have been restored!

Times were so much simpler in 1955.

"Bats Day" at Disneyland

Happy Halloween everyone! What better way to commemorate Halloween than a special magazine visit to “Bats Day” at Disneyland. I few years back I accidentally (really, it was an accident) went to the park on “Bats Day”, after the initial shock it ended up being really fun. “Raver Day” (again by accident) on the other hand, was not so fun and actually was more frightening than “Bats Day”.

Here’s Gothic Beauty Magazine, issue 28 from 2009. Something about Goths in a glossy magazine doesn’t seem right. For the record, these are “excerpts for review purposes”.

The “Bats Day” article chronicles the gothic gathering from the perspective of Kynt and Vyxsin. As you can see, Kynt & Vyxsin autographed the article just for me! In fact, Vyxsin also sent me this 8 by 10 glossy (Adults onlylink)…

Vyxsin has the best line in the article “Looking around and seeing so many creative, beautiful and unique people gathered together, set against such an epic and familiar backdrop was incredible!”. Wow, She’s Hot and Smart!

Candy Violet” & “Princess Lolita” - Oh my.

Contrary to popular belief, Goths can go out in the day light, they just need an umbrella.

How about a couple of full page advertisements? These dolls look like friends of Chucky! I'll take one of each.

Demonia looks like they make the same clothes I wear all the time. OK, not really, but I better purchase some if I want to impress Vyxsin.

And since I’m trying to impress Vyxsin, here’s a place we can meet…

Come back tomorrow for the Disney News from the Winter of 1979 and an inside look and the re-done Magic Shop on Main Street.
