"Teen" Magazine - February 1961

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Following up on last weeks 1967 Tiger Beat's Fave post (link) this week we’ve got “'Teen” Magazine from February 1961. Are the Everly Brothers splitting up… Why?

A simple two page article has you following Pat Molittieri thru a fun filled New Years Eve at Disneyland. The most interesting part to me is how Pat and her boyfriend over dressed for the event. Pat says “Some of the girls were even wearing Capris and many of the guys were in Levis. This could only happen in California”. If you need better scans, high resolution copies are available here (Page 1) and (Page 2).

The Everly’s Bust-up! This article is a bust as the duo remained together until 1973 when they began a ten year split; “The duo split on July 14, 1973, when Don Everly came onstage too drunk to perform at Knotts Berry Farm. This was especially embarrassing since it was billed as their last performance, and so family members, friends, and fans from within the music industry were in heavy attendance … The brothers reformed in 1983.” (Wikipedia link).

Here’s your “CinemaScoop” page. Ricky Nelson looks more like “Rick” by 1961. Look, its “Dennis the Menace’s” Jay north in Pepe? I've never heard of Pepe but wow it had an all-star cast of cameos (link); Bing Crosby, Bobby Darrin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jimmu Durante, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Judy Garland, Greer Garson, Hedda Hopper, Joey Bishop, Ernie Kovacs, Peter Lawford, Janet Leigh, Jack Lemon, Kim Novak, Donna Reed, Edward G. Robinson!, Caesar Romero, Charles Coburn, Dean Martin and Ann B. Davis! I have GOT to see this movie! And of course, who can forget “Gorgo”!

Sally was “Blue”, but now Sally is “Gay with Midol”. I’m glad we got that cleared up.

First time ever record offer! Nothing like floating disembodied heads to make you want to buy something.

Elvis Presley’s latest album “His Hand in Mine”. This was Elvis’ first 12” LP (long play) gospel album for RCA. It was also the follow-up to the excellent “Peace in the Valley” from 1957 - Elvis was at his best doing gospel (link).

Because this “Magazine Monday’s” Disneyland article was so short, here’s a little more Disneyland, this fun cover of Vacationland from the Winter of 1960-1961 has none other than Vesey Walker leading the band down Main Street.

This issue is short at only 12 pages but there a few pages of vintage Disneyland nuggets. A great two page article “A Backward glance and a Look ahead” and another super two page article “News From Disneyland”. Here’s one of the “News” stories. Who else loves this concept art???

Another "News" story; looks like Pat, her date and 15,000 other folks paid $5.50 each for a splendid (but cold) New Years Eve at Disneyland.

Dolly Madison Cakes and a Fantasyland Fun-fare!

Come back on Bonus Sunday for the entire issue Vacationland Winter 1960-1961. I hope everyone had a great Independence day. Mine? - There was "peace in the valley for me".

Tiger Beat's FAVE - October 1967

Welcome to Magazine Monday! I had a bunch of text written up for this magazine but somehow I deleted it and I’m too lazy to re-type it. So this October 1967 issue of Tiger Beat’s Fave will be a self guided tour, feel free to add your own commentary.

Kurt’s Disneyland Fling!

Angela Cartwright all grown up, WOW - beam me up Penny!

Here’s the “other” fab four.

Peter was always my favorite Monkey, who was yours???

TV-Radio Life - March 4, 1955

Welcome to Magazine Monday. While technically today’s magazine is really a TV guide, its magazine sized and has a magazine sounding name so that close enough. From March 4, 1955 its TV-Radio Life, at ¢10 it’s “The best dime buy in town”. A standard photo of Walt’s is on the cover, complete with Donald and Minnie being sweet.

This week on TV. Fascinating ratings review, Disneyland is at number 9.

The Disneyland article is again just two pages, but still a fun read.

The top 25 songs. Mr. Sandman at No. 11!

Wednesday’s TV listing, Disneyland’s “Man in Space” episode airs at 7:30pm. Notice “Norby” at 6:55 (odd time to start) its one of three show in color for the entire week!

Check out all the radio stations in Los Angeles. Amazingly, these stations are still with is; KFI 640, KABC 790, KFWB 980, KNX 1070, KGIL 1260. The formats have change, but they are still broadcasting, I listen to all of those stations still!

KABC took a nice advertisement on the back cover.

Magazine Potpourri

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today is Magazine Potpourri day, four short vintage Disneyland articles that have no magazine attached. I would prefer to have the entire magazine, but at least we’ve got the main part!

First up, the only two page article today and it’s from Popular Mechanics, December 1954. That's the early map that is way off, but super cool to gaze at… Hey, who is that pointing at the Mark Twain? The park will be “Open for inspection next May” – close.

“Kid’s Dream World Comes True” from Popular Science August 1955.

This article should have been posted yesterday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ’59 additions to Disneyland. From the July 1959 edition of Popular Mechanics.

“Disneyland Extends Monorail”. From the April 1961 edition of Railway Age.

From an unknown & undated magazine, this advertisement if for the Prescon Corporation and describes how the tower for the Disneyland Hotel was built. Did they let guest in the first two floors while the other nine were being built? How did that work out?

This post needs some color! Another undated advertisement, most likely from 1956 or 1957. Insurance by North America (INA), be sure and visit their Information Center at Disneyland.

This advertisement is on the back side of the INA page. Why do desserts from the 1950’s always look so yummy???

Photos of Walt I’ve never seen...

The photos in today’s post have a few things in common; they are all from a lesser know magazine, “The Disney WorldFebruary – March 1966 issue, Walt Disney appears in each one (well, not the cover!) and I’ve never seen them before. Possibly some of these will be “new” old photos of Walt for you as well.

Maybe “The Disney World” should be posted on Magazine Monday’s, but I’m not really sure it’s a traditional “magazine”. There are no advertisements whatsoever and of course it's “all” Disney stuff. Come back tomorrow for the entire magazine on Bonus Sunday.

Susan Hampshire’s pretty face graces the cover. Susan was probably filming that unforgettable Disney classic “The Fighting Prince of Donegal”.

Daveland had a great post this week showing Walt at a press conference in 1966 (link). Here’s Walt at that same press conference but in this photo he's pointing at the press, not the big map. He seems to look “less tired” in this photo, which is interesting given the two photos where probably taken only minutes apart.

This one is my favorite, although I may have seen this one somewhere before, maybe in John Hench’s book Designing Disney ? I have the book somewhere I should check, by the way, it's an EXCELLENT Book, and not a bad price in soft cover.

Jasper, in The Gnomobile” I’ve never heard of this until I read the article with this photo.

Walt receiving Photoplay’s “Front Cover Award”. I wonder how many awards Walt received in his life time. Thousands I would guess.

That's one lucky group of paper boys! Looks like a cool winter day.

Walt buys a share of File-Dex-Co stock, huh? Cool aeriel photo behind them!

Here are a few articles of interest.

I have two more 1966 issues of "The Disney Way", I'll post them soon.

"Best of" Magazine Monday

Due to the weekend having not enough hours, today’s Magazine Monday is a “Best of” edition. These two posts were from last July, hopefully you missed them or will enjoy them again.

************AUTOPIA 1955*************

By all accounts Autopia was an instant hit from the day Disneyland opened. Today’s post will feature two car enthusiast magazine’s from 1955 that demonstrate how popular the attraction became and how quickly it happened.

First up from October 1955 it's “Hot Rod” magazine. Hot Rod still arrives in my mailbox every month; it’s the grand daddy of car magazines. A classic cover, those little “Tailgate Torpedoes” look ready to take Peggy Sue to the Hop!

This article is fairly short at just two pages. However, this is just a few months after Disneyland opened. I bet this made every kid who read this magazine beg their parents to go to Disneyland.

Neat that Robert (Bob) Gurr gets proper credit for being in charge of the project.

Our second car magazine today is “Rod & Custom” from November 1955, this is a smaller sized magazine, about the size of the old TV Guides.

Rod & Custom dedicated more space for their Autopia article. In fact, there is a TON of information on the first generation cars in here, specs and all. There are some great rare photos too, they are Black & White and faded, but still fun to look at. Bob Gurr gets credit in this one too! As does Johnny Hartman and Hartman Engineering.

This last page has just the last two paragraphs of the Autopia article. Check out the “Christy’s Corner” article about fuel injection. It predicts the 1956 Ford Thunderbird and Cadillac El Dorado will have Fuel Injection, “The two are almost positive bets”, then it goes on to claim a “fair bet” that the Corvette will get Fuel Injection also for 1956. None of those came true in 1956. The Corvette did get optional Fuel Injection in 1957 and the 1957 Pontiac Bonneville got Standard Fuel Injection (I want one! Link), but the Eldorado would not get F.I. until 1976 (it was optional) and the Thunderbird would not get F.I. until the 1980’s!

From Major of at Gorilla’s Don’t Blog, from "Road and Track" September 1955. A single page article on the two month old Autopia! Thanks Major!

************SAGA 1956***************

The magazine featured in the above Autopia post must have inspired countless kids to want to go to Disneyland even more than they already did. This is a fascinating article about a family that felt pressure from everywhere to take the kids to Disneyland.

From “Saga” magazines September 1956 issue, the article is titled “Trapped in Disneyland” It’s told from Dad’s perspective, his wife Irene seems to be on his side, the Kids; Steve and Andy are classically at odds with the parents.

This article is either a total put down of Disneyland or it's cutting edge 1956 comedy & sarcasm or possibly both, you be the judge. My favorite part is when dad gets upset because the Pirate Ship ride turned out to be a tuna restaurant! Enjoy…
