This ticket book has been sitting on the top of my keyboard for months, I figured its finally time to post it. From May 1969. This book is naturally missing its Main Gate admission ticket but there's plenty of lettered tickets left to look at.

The Haunted Mansion wont open for a few more months, but boy the park sure had a lot of amazing attractions to chose from.

The Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln ticket gets its own special color of Globe Safety Paper.

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today's we've got two magazines for the price of one! Neither is very good so maybe together they will make one decent post (don't count on it).

First up from February 1982 its the Auto Club News. Nice cover photo of the Main Street station, why you'd almost think there was a nice Disneyland article within.

No great article here, just some park info and a savings program!

Interesting how in the early 80's this girl was considered "cute", by today's standards she's in need of a plastic surgeon!

Up next we violate the "its vintage if the year starts with 19" rule to bring you Discover Hollywood, Winter 2011. This "doctors office" magazine has a pretty decent article about Walt's connection to Los Feliz.

Hey, they published the address of all of Walt's old homes, let's pack up the station-wagon and start sight seeing!

Fascinating history between Walt Disney and Richard Lawry, its all news to me.

Some recipes for anyone who still cooks.

A clue on the back tells us this brochure actually came from "Le Gourmet Shop in New Orleans Square".

TV Channels Weekly Magazine June 13-19, 1965

Welcome to Magazine Monday (a day late, see the cashier for a refund). Today we’ve got TV Channels Weekly Magazine from June 13-19, 1965. The cover features “Al Hirt, a 300-pound trumpet player from New Orleans”. Al would headline an hour-long variety show running all summer as a fill in for Jackie Gleason on CBS.

Bettelou Peterson tells us her top picks for this week’s TV shows.

This one page Disneyland article is pretty lame. The cover claimed a “Tour of Disneyland with the gang from Farmer’s Daughter”. Well, the “Tour” is three pictures, two on Main Street and one in front of the floral Mickey planter! And excuse me but where is Inger Stevens, you know, the “Farmer's Daughter”!

Let’s tune in to “Walt Disney” on Sunday night at 7:00 pm on channel 4, in COLOR.

Saturday had a nice line up too, check it out.

Here's a fun snapshot of Disneyland's Castle with a typical 1950's posing on one of the side bridges. This Kodacolor Print (Made only by Kodak) was processed the week of September 28, 1957, however a hand written note on the back states this photo was taken in June 1957.

Welcome to Magazine Monday (and welcome back to some new posts!). This weeks magazine is "This Week Magazine" from April 15, 1956. Janet Leigh graces the cover a few years before she goes Psycho!

The Disneyland article is short and just one little photo but its full of interesting information on the less than a year old park. Bennett Cerf took a few minutes away from "Whats my Line" to write this for us. A model of a giant chair-lift that will take you from one end of the park to the other! And what vintage Disneyland article is worth posting unless it contains a reference to Sardinian Donkey's ~~Monkey's~~!

Merry Christmas Everyone! I hope everybody is having a wonderful holiday. Please enjoy this re-post from Christmas Day 2009; I like this magazine so much (this is the third re-broadcasting of this post) you can consider it a new Christmas tradition here on the blog.

Today we have a special Christmas Edition of Magazine Monday. From December 1957 it’s Family Circle Magazine. This issue features an amazing 12 page article “Especially for Children, a Christmas Story about St. Francis” as told by Mary Martin and Visualized by Walt Disney and staff.

“The Little Lame Lamb, a story of Saint Frances of Assisi and the first Nativity Scene” is a wonderful Christmas season story, it’s worth taking the time to read it in its entirety. And as you’ll see, the artwork is top notch, wouldn’t it be amazing to own some of the originals?

Now presented in order, in high resolution and without further interruption, “The Little Lame Lamb”, enjoy.

Oh boy would I like to get this record! I bet the 12 page booklet has all the same artwork as this article just like Family Circle December 1958 and the “Christmas at Disneyland LP”. This must be a shorter story than Christmas at Disneyland as its all on one 45. If I had this record of course you’d be hearing here on the blog.

Before we get to some wonderful vintage holiday advertisements, Family Circle has a memo to its readers. Can you imagine it, they are raising the price of each issue to ten cents?

The ingredients of this fruit cake, minus the fruit, nuts and raisins, sound pretty good. No baking? Chill for two days? What kind of commie cake is this?

Some things never change (thank goodness). You’ll find a box or two of Lipton's Chicken Noodle Soup in my cupboard, how about yours? That glass soup pan on the electric burner looks so cool!

Well… This is a family magazine and its 1957 so this must be acceptable to show on my blog. “She dreamed she was lost in a London Fog”, maybe she was dreaming because she was being held and molded by her “talented bra… in the prettiest possible lines”… Was Maidenform a Division of Cadillac in 1957?

Family Circle Magazine - December 1958

From December 1958 we’ve got Family Circle Magazine. This issue features the tale of “A Christmas Adventure in Disneyland”. The Disneyland story covers eleven pages and has poems and song lyrics accompanying it.

As you can see my copy of this Magazine is not only old and faded, but appears to have some decent water damage as well. And naturally the Disneyland article has the worse damage!

Rather than present dull, faded, stained pages, I just so happen to have the same story as told via a 1958 Disneyland Record. This grand LP included a full size booklet in between the covers and has held up remarkably well for 51 years.

The inside cover describes what’s on the record.

How about listening to the record as you follow along reading the story? I recorded each side of the LP, the files are below. No video this time, I discovered you get much better sound quality when you connect the stereo directly to the computer. That said, this record is 51 years old and has its share of pops & scratches.

The narration is a bit annoying, with the worse Mr. Toad impression I’ve ever heard. However, the record is fun to listen to. You MUST check out the song “Jingle Bones” at 10:30 on side one, classic late ‘50’s Disney at its best.

Some of the other “Story Teller” series of Disneyland Records available in 1958. I have few of these, most are fairly rare including this one.

Now back to the magazine. These sets of pages represent all things Christmas in 1958. Each of these five articles is spread over two pages. I did a decent job of stitching them together but you will notice color variations on each of the two pages. It appears to have been printed that way or half the pages faded more than the other half.

More Christmas cookies with recipes, this time from Ceresota Flour (unbleached – naturally white). Have you ever heard of “Ceresota Flour”, I sure haven’t.

Mazola was way ahead of the health food curve, promoting corn oil as more heather than regular oil (lard).

New Magic Kingdom Club Cards - 1968

This flyer promoting Operation Mouse was from at a post back in January 2009 (link).

Right after I posted the flyer in 2009 a blog reader contacted me and we made an exchange. I got myself a real Operation Mouse Money 50¢ coupon thing (link). As an added bonus it’s on that wonderful “castle and star” paper.

Notice the expiration date in 1969; these were literally “January Only”.

Another great blog reader recently sent me some great scans of more Operation Mouse Money, thank you Mr. Disney Dollar collector! This copy from Winter 68-69 Disney News came with the coupons.

Wow, a couple interesting things to note here. First, these are two different colors than my sample above? And neither one matches the colors of the samples in my flyer at the top? What gives?

Notice the expiration date; 1968? My flyer is dated 12/68 clearly intended for January 1969.

These “voids” have very low serial numbers; maybe these were tests done earlier in 1968 so it made sense to print 1968? Or maybe they did this promotion in 1968 as well as 1969? Jason, what’s the database got say on “Operation Mouse”?

Fantasy on Parade - December 18, 1967

On December 17, 1967 at 3:00pm Disneyland was premiering "Fantasy on Parade" and with this special ticket (park admission not included) you'll be getting a seat in the "Reserved Seating Section". According to Jason's Disneyland Almanac the park was open from 10am until Midnight so you've got plenty of time before and after the 3:00pm parade. The weather was a high of 64, low of 41, the evening also had the Candlelight Procession & Ceremony.

Horseless Carriage Gazette - Nov. - Dec. 1955

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today’s magazine is an oldie, from November-December 1955 it’s the Horseless Carriage Gazette. The cover features a well-lit Main Street Cinema at night on what appears to be New Year’s Eve, although the “Happy New Year” on the banner appears to be “added” after the photo was taken.

The inside cover features some nice color photos, those cars a truly priceless today.

The Horseless Carriages do look at home on Disneyland's Main Street don’t they? 80 of them turned out for the event on a “recent Sunday” Hmmm, I can‘t find this event in my Disneyland Almanac, Jason, what gives?

Disneyland Service Awards - December 8, 1977

Here's a switch, I'm usually a day or two late on matching an old date with the current date, today I'm a day early... from December 8, 1977 we've got the program to the Disneyland Service Awards Banquet held in the Embassy Room of the Disneyland Hotel.

Tinkerbell has a nice spot here on the fancy separator page, which itself feels like thick parchment paper.

Nice Agenda; get drunk, eat, watch a program, have the awards presentation, then dancing!

Who would ever want to know all these names of people that worked at Disneyland and when they retired?

This photo is undated, looking closely at the clothing and hair styles (and sideburns!) I'd place it around 1970 plus or minus a year, what's your guess?

News and Views - Fall 1982

Welcome to Magazine Monday – Florida Edition. From the Fall of 1982 its GMAC’s “News and Views” Magazine. The Cover and main article are about GM’s amazing World of Motion opening at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center.

All of the color pages in the magazine are dedicated to Epcot and the World of Motion article. This attraction seems like it was the ultimate Audio-Animatronic – I sure wish I could have seen it. What happened to all the AA’s when it closed in 1996?

This Magic Kingdom Club article is in between the World of Motion article so I thought I’d include it here.

The Aero2000 had some features that actually did make it into production. The “heads up” instrument panel projection system was first available on the ‘98 Corvette then a few years later on Pontiac’s and I think others GM’s as well. Video camera for 180-degree back up view – check, Radar assisted braking – what the heck is that?, full electronic diagnostics – OBD-II check, Satellite assisted navigation – like that will ever happen, what's next, flying cars???

Magic Mountain’s Red Badge of Courage and a Construction Photo

Time for some vintage Magic Mountain fun. This little card appears to be part of a promotion or contest called “Magic Mountain’s Red Badge of Courage”. The Troll looks dizzy, blame the Crazy Barrels and the Spin Out! Since the Log Jammer is now permanently closed (how sad it that?) there are only two attractions on this card that are still left at the park; Gold Rusher and the Jet Stream, both are excellent rides! I’m thinking there’s an iron on patch or a pin out there somewhere that looks just like that circle with the Troll.

This next picture is unrelated to the card above but boy is it exciting! Once again a loyal and dedicated blog reader has sent the blog some amazing images. This is one of 12 personal Viewmaster photos taken of Magic Mountain in its early construction phase (The park would open in May of 1971). I recently visited the Mountain for some before and after shots so you’ll be seeing those and the vintage construction photos over the next couple of weeks.

An after shot of the scene below is virtually impossible today, blame Tatsu! I’m going back this weekend to see if I can get this shot from the Tatsu load area (I might even ride it, maybe…). Let’s examine this shot taken approximately from the base of the yet to be completed Sky Tower;

Dead center; under those yellow tarps are the "Funicular" trains (currently "The Orient Express") with it freshly graded double track and custom lower station. Moving clockwise; the structure with the stone chimney is the "Coffee Grinder" (today’s "Cyber Café"), far left; the “Feather Merchant” (now the "MPorium" - link); center back; the main bathrooms and the ticket booths to the right of the bathrooms, next is the "Holiday Bazaar" merchandise store, then the "Gazebo" and lastly to the far right; the "Grand Carousel".

What’s really amazing about this picture is that with the exception of the ticket booths, every structure in this photo is still there. You’ll see them all in detail in the next couple of weeks.

Disneyland - Pop Warner, November 28, 1964

Happy December everyone! (Since this post is three days late lets pretend its November 28th again) Presented on November 28, 1964, this Certificate of Achievement in Good Sportsmanship was for players in the 6th National Pop Warner Disneyland Bowl Football Festival. The current Pop Warner Championship Tournaments are being played at the Walt Disney World resort starting this Friday (link).

I wonder where they played in 1964? I bet Jason knows. Speaking of Jason, according to his recent fine book "Jason's Disneyland Almanac" (get your copy here - link) on November 28, 1964 Disneyland's operating hours were 9am to 12am, park attendance was 24,190, the weather was a high of 69 and a low of 39, it was also a Date Nite! I love this book!

A Musical Tour of Disneyland on 45 rpm records - 1956

Rolling Stone Magazine - September 25, 1975

Welcome to Magazine Monday on Wednesday. Today we’ve some mid-seventies, well, whatever it is… From September 25, 1975 its Rolling Stone Magazine, the Eagles on the cover must have objected to shirts and haircuts, Don Henley looks like a poodle.

Ralph Steadman interprets Disneyland in this odd 2 page “article”. Ralph is still doing his artwork and has his own website here (link).

Zooming in on the upper left we find some deranged Disneyland Characters.

Seriously, I don’t get this at all… Ralph is British so maybe I just don’t get the humor from across the pond?

To me Monstro really does appear to be eating the guests so I get this one.

These last two drawings are not from this magazine, I found them on the Internet but they do seem to be from about the same time period. From what I can tell he wants a beer!

Interesting mix of backgrounds, nice touch with the Disneyland bag on the wheelchair.

Here’s a super article comparing laser video discs and CED video discs, clearly a laser was a better technology than using a disc similar to a vinyl LP, complete with grooves and skips. I have both vintage systems and while the laser is obviously superior, the CED system has its own charms (see the TRON CED Disc on my prior post here – link).

The Eagles were about to become ultra-popular and Rolling Stone magazine knew it.

Who else remembers the Bay City Rollers? I remember two things; these ridiculous outfits (link) and this ridiculous song (link) yes I know the words by heart, don't ask.

Fleetwood Mack, realigned and about to become super stars.

Aerosmith too was on the verge of becoming huge.

Who is this Bruce guy? I wonder if he ever had any hits?

How about a few advertisements? This front loading Pioneer Cassette deck with Dolby, was state of the art in 1975. Cassettes still were behind 8 tracks in popularity in 1975 - that would change in a few years.

Speaking of 8-Tracks, here’s Billy Preston telling us how good the Craig Powerplay car stereo is, also available in cassette.

He smokes for pleasure and to get sweaty? Smoking is bad, don’t do it, its gross. And if you do you might wake up one day looking like this guy and be forced to wear those pants with that belt and that necklace!

A Musical Tour of Main Street U.S.A. - 1956

It’s Audio Visual souvenir day (come back on Wednesday for Magazine Monday) this little 45rpm record is not dated but I believe its from 1956 and was part of the larger LP “Walt Disney Takes You to Disneyland”, you can see my previous post on that LP here (link). Today’s 45rpm record is “Walt Disney Takes you to Main Street U.S.A., a Musical Tour”. Great fence work surrounding the stylish drinking fountain.

Super fun 1956 Map on the back, I see the never made Phantom Boats 2.0 with the propeller on the back! Notice the train tracks have the bypass line at both stations.

Let’s take a listen shall we?

You can hear side two here (link) for some reason the video quality is lacking on side two but the sound is good.

This ticket is probably from 1957 or early 1958, not 1956, but I like it and it fits this post pretty good.

Magic Kingdom Club Ticket Book - September 1976

Magic Kingdom Club Membership Card - 1972

Taking yet another look at a Magic Kingdom Club membership card today we’ve got a card from 1972. This unused card (imagine all the unfulfilled happy memories) was for the Delco Sparks Travelers U.A.W. Local 662, Indiana.

Toy Review Magazine - 1972

Welcome to Magazine Monday – Florida Edition. This post is a little late in celebrating Walt Disney World’s 40th anniversary, hey if it were Disneyland they’d be celebrating it all year long. The Summer/Fall 1972 edition of Toy Review Magazine contains a nice three page article on a less than one year old Walt Disney World. Does anyone else see a resemblance in this cover photo to 1955/56 Disneyland Fantasyland photos?

The inside of the front cover shows come color photos of the articles within, a nice touch since the entire contents are printed in black and white on newsprint!

It’s actually a fairly informative and informal article on the early days of Walt Disney World. A clear mistake however in the reference to the tickets being “B” thru “E” with “B” for the cheapest attractions. There has been an “A” Ticket at Walt Disney World since opening day (link). The “Official” vendor thing is pretty funny.

So true about how difficult it is to get to the darn front gate of Walt Disney World!

Apparently the park was still not finished with half the sub fleet running and too few sit down restaurants. The hidden queue lines show some frustration. The author asked about using Disneyland tickets are Walt Disney World, answer – YES! Mention of the Magic Kingdom Club is neat, but there’s the “B” thru “E” ticket reference again, ugh!

How about a few pages of toy reviews? When I was a kid I always wanted one of those Disney Movie Viewers, I have one now!

Magic Kingdom Club Ticket Book - October 1961

Let's roll back the clock 50 years and take a close-up look at a Disneyland Magic Kingdom Club ticket book from October 1961. This ticket book is complete and unused and in amazing condition for being 50 years old, the cloth and its adhesive on the binder are still soft and pliable. Even Disneyland's ticket books were first class!

Magic Kingdom Club members got great discounts. The "off season" Magic Kingdom Club ticket books were different than the "summer season" books. The Summer season had 2 extra tickets (usually 1 "D" and 1 "E") making a total of 12, for the price of 10. The "off season" club ticket books (like today's example) only had 10 tickets but each one is magic, a "Magic Key Coupon" good for admission to any ride or attraction in Disneyland making all 10 tickets potential "E" tickets!

Sharp eyes will notice the Magic Key ticket is not from the book in this post (I think its from 1960, but basically the same as 1961) I'm dedicated, but I'm not tearing a ticket out of this book!

Classic Disneyland is represented here in this attraction list. The Flying Saucers must be the newest attraction at the time.

$3.75 for admission to Disneyland and 10 "E" tickets, sounds like a bargain even in 1961 money.

On November 6, 1967 Disneyland held one of the magical “Private Parties” for the Illuminators (not to be confused with the Illuminati) and the California Grocers Association. “California Grocers Nite” was held from 7pm to Midnight. I wonder how many tickets were sold?

Refund only allowed if the party is cancelled due to inclement weather. Wouldn’t it be neat to know the weather at Disneyland for any particular day in history? Someone should write a book about that (link).

From this Sunday's upcoming Summer 1968 Vacationland post, I bet the Illuminators were pillaging and plundering on their private nite! Exactly what detail in Pirates of the Caribbean was an aspect taken from Adventure Thru Inner Space, which actually opened 4 months after Pirates!

May 1967 "E" Ticket

Today we’ve got one of my favorite Vintage Disneyland Tickets. I posted this one a few years ago, but I like it so much I’ve re-scanned it in HD and we can all gaze at it again. This Child “E” Ticket is from May 1967 and is printed on the rare “Star and Castle” safety paper.

This “E” Ticket is significant as it’s the first to feature a new realm; New Orleans Square and the very recently open Pirates of the Caribbean. With the exception of the Pack Mules, all of these attractions are still in operation at Disneyland today!

Welcome to Magazine Monday (and Happy Halloween!). For only Two Shillings and Sixpence you can have your very own copy of Meccano Magazine, a hobby magazine. This issue from November 1968 has a super cover photo of the Monorail at Disneyland. Enjoy the photo; it’s the only one of Disneyland in this issue! Hey, that’s not the Tomorrowland of 1968, I see the rocket to the moon (being convert to Douglas?) at least they could have used a current photo. Bonus points for the Bubble top Monorail though.

Here’s an exhaustive four page article about Monorails! Unless I missed it they left out any mention of Disneyland. To be fair the inside cover has these never before disclosed facts: “Front Cover: The Disneyland “Highway in the Sky” monorail railway, In California USA, is an extremely advanced transport system. Built on the Alweg principle the transit speed is 45pmh. Electronically powered this monorail went into service in 1959 and carried over 17,000,000 passengers since then.”

Those prices look like impossible fractions.

We had one of these when I was a kid, they really work!

I had Dinky cars too when I was a kid, do I have even one now, nope! Wow these were cool!

Santa Fe & Disneyland R.R - “The New Circle Route” - 1956

Santa Fe & Disneyland R.R tickets are always fun to look at. Walt's pride in his Railroad is evident in the highly detailed and "authentic" looking early train tickets. Today's example is a scan that was donated by loyal reader Michael. I believe the "New Circle Route” wording was used immediately after the two trains stopped passing each other and each started identical station stops.

The hand written notes on the back of the ticket are almost as cool as the ticket itself. The Tomorrowland Boats - NICE!

For those that may not be aware, according to reliable sources (such as Daveland) “It was recently announced at the D23 Expo that the Carnation Plaza Gardens were going bye-bye and being replaced by a Fantasy Faire Princess Meet-And-Greet”. The Gardens opened August 18, 1956 and has survived over five decades of changes at the park. The bandstand has seen legendary performers, such as my favorite Disneyland band The Elliot Brothers!

Let's not even get into how utterly lame the idea is of removing the Carnation Plaza Gardens. I mentioned in my recent trip report (link) that Disney should place the new “Princess Meet-And-Greet” over at the old Motor Boat Cruise Load area (Fantasia Gardens) and leave the Carnation Plaza Gardens alone.

Lloyd Elliot’s (of the Elliot Brothers) daughter recently wrote into the trip report blog and made the following comment:

“I really enjoyed your tour of Plaza Gardens and commentary on its pending demise as well as Daveland's blog on same. In a way I grew up in the Gardens as the Elliott Brothers were my Dad Lloyd and my Uncle Bill. It's really wonderful to see how many people remember them and the fun times that were generated out of that area!

I was there a couple of years ago for my '55th-I hadn't been there for over ten years-I saw that Plaza Gardens had been repainted burgundy/tan and that they had taken out the old concession stands (where you could buy Fantasia ice cream). What used to be Dad's "secret passage" behind the bandstand to Frontierland is now a wide archway that anyone can go through. But the mirror ball was still there and that terrazzo floor still looked great!

I hope someone out there in-the-know might find out when this remodeling is supposed to take place. My cousin talked about making a last pilgrimage. Wouldn't it be great if Disneyland had one last dance show there as a tribute to all the great musicians who played there in the past?”

I know the mouse house in Burbank reads this blog (thanks guys!) so can someone PLEASE print out this post and get in the hands of whoever can stop this from happening!!

Welcome to Souvenir Saturday. I've always loved the Elliott Brothers and this LP has got to be one of their best. The cover alone will put you in the mood to dance!

You can buy this album on iTunes, but I bet its not on warm vinyl and I can guarantee you its not on the "Disc-Jockey" label, one of the international producers of LP's for Disneyland Records. This version was pressed in and made for Argentina.

As a collector of vintage vinyl its been my experience that on average the foreign pressings of LP's are superior to the US versions. My guess would be the lower volume of records stamped in foreign countries. A master stamper can be used hundreds if not thousands of times, but the first stamping always sounds better then the last one - the high number of pressing in the US tended to put out some mass produced LP's that varied greatly in quality. The low number of pressings overseas tend to be a bit cleaner and have less defects.

Let's watch the first part of "Let's Dance at Disneyland".

Welcome to best of edition of Magazine Monday. Today's edition is a re-broadcast of three mid-fifties magazine posts I did a few years ago.

Disneyland in Life - August 15, 1955

August 15, 1955. This is a four page article on Disneyland from Life Magazine.

Interesting how only four pages were dedicated to this Disneyland article. MacArthur gets 25 pages and an article on a 1950’s house wife “The 80-hour work week” gets 10 pages! I guess Disneyland was still not a “sure thing” just a few weeks after its opening, therefore if only gets four pages. And it’s very “light” on the text.

First up, the Tea Cups with no paint on the deck! That’s the “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party” to be more precise.

Next some shots of from the river boat as they “Circle Jungle Island”? The Castle shot slides over to the other page so I tried to include the whole castle in this scan. Notice the castle windows, you can see straight thru them!

Children’s Saloon? I suppose that’s because they don’t sell alcohol? Those Coke fountains sure look neat! Notice a few things on the Casey Jr. Ride; Nice landscaping for the Canal Boats! Is that a TV camera on a raised platform thing? If so, was this for the opening day broadcast? I thought Casey Jr. didn’t open for about a week after Disneyland opened so what’s up with the camera?

Lots O’ Indians in this picture, real ones! Interesting “Buckboard” ride, I don’t think I’ve seen that on any tickets! Not much to hold the guests in, better hold on tight.

This Life magazine is FULL of great 1955 car ads. I am a vintage car nut, I used to buy and sell them like trading cards, I am much better now. But I sure love looking at these old ads. Since I am mostly a GM fan, the first three are beauties by GM. Then a Mercury, Nash and a Studebaker. I guess Chrysler was not up to spending the advertising dollars to be in Life Magazine.

My first car was a 1956 Buick Super 4-door Riviera hardtop, very much like this 1955 Buick Century.

Even the ink pens were “car crazy” in 1955. Styled in Multimillion-dollar new car colors.

I’m told the 1950’s really weren’t this fun; it’s just the way everyone wanted it to be. Maybe that wasn’t a bad thing; at least they “wanted” it to be idealistic. Today, I am not so sure….

Magic Circle Magazine - June 1956

From June 1956 it’s “Magic Circle” magazine. “Published in the interests of Perfect Circle distributors, dealers, garages, repair shops and super service stations all over the world, by Perfect Circle Corporation.” The back cover has an ad for Perfect Circle, they make piston rings!

Great front cover. This magazine is “Life” size at about 10 ½” by 13 ½”, but with only 15 pages in this issue.

The inside of the front cover. My first car was a 1956 Buick just like the one on the far left in the middle photo! Nice Mercedes setup and Cynthia Patrick looks mighty fine too.

Now presented for your enjoyment, an interesting "look at" Disneyland as it looked and more importantly felt in 1956.

Staying with the Buick theme, we’ve got “Buick Magazine", from May 1957. That clock is way cool!

Straight forward two page article.

1957 Buick Special, longer, lower and wider than the 1956 Buick I used to own. It‘s still a classic design.

Disneyland Starlite Nights Ticket Book - 1965

Here’s a fun look at a “couples” ticket book from Disneyland’s past. From June 1965 this special “Starlite Nights” ticket book was for couples and I’m guessing intended to be used on “Date Nites”. This first scan was donated to the blog by “anonymous” from his secret lair, thank you sir! How cool is that double admission ticket? Notice the “Special Main Gate Admissions” are good after 5pm only. Even the back of the book is outstanding, the crescent moon and stars are a nice touch.

From my collection we’ve got a partial book with a couple of “A” and “B” tickets left, the smart couple used all the good tickets. Since this is June 1965 we are still graced with Walt’s stylized signature, although the trademark purple has been replaced with “Starlite Blue”.

The tickets are regular lettered tickets except the letter is again blue not purple and of course that super cool Castle & blue moon logo make these tickets special and good only after 5pm!

The Tomorrowland Jet(s) and the Art of Animation have about a year left.

These tickets we good only after 5pm (yea that’s the 3rd time I said that) but they are also only good during the "regular summer season", in fact, they’re VOID after the summer season, so there.

Here’s an “E” ticket from a post I did back in 2008 and I’d rescan it but I can’t find it at the moment, I’m working on a special project and my tickets are all over the place!

The June 1965 attraction list sure looks inviting.

The “sister” book to the one in the first scan recently sold on eBay for $500, I didn’t even bid on it!

This is one of those articles where the rest of the magazine is missing; I was able to stitch the internet’s together to complete this post. Here’s the cover taken from an old Ebay photo.

“The land the does away with time” is an excellent (if not short) article on a less than one year old Disneyland. Some interesting photos that really show how barren the park was in the early days.

The next two pages are the back sides of the Disneyland article, ok so maybe we’re not missing much by not having the entire issue.

Walt Disney World’s 40th anniversary is just one day away! What better time to take a closeup look at the original tickets used when Walt Disney World opened. This first scan was donated by a blog reader (D.G.). back in 2008. This is a complete October 1971 Magic Kingdom ticket book. It has the main gate ticket, the transportation ticket and all of it’s a thru E tickets, how cool is that?

The following scans are also tickets from October 1971, these are from a couple of incomplete books in my collection. A complete book as shown above is ultra-rare and is worth a boat load of Churro’s.

Anyone my age or younger that grew up watching Sesame Street has got to remember the numbers sequences (the “one of these things doesn’t belong” sequences were my favorite) so lets relive those fond memories and do some numbering!

As Walt Disney World’s 40th anniversary gets ever closer can’t you just feel the excitement in the air? Do you think Anaheim will do anything on Oct 1st to celebrate? (Is Florida even celebrating it?) Well we’re celebrating it here on the blog - just like Gorilla's Don't Blog.

Today’s post is all 1972! Up first the cover to the Fall/Winter 1972 issue of Walt Disney World Vacationland. This is issue number 2 of Volume 1; can you guess which issue I’m going to post on Oct 1st?

For anyone that noticed, the Summer 1976 issue of WDW Vacationland from last week’s post (link) didn’t get posted last Sunday (insert dog-ate-homework excuse here) therefore look for it this weekend on WDW Super Sunday.

A nice glossy color brochure from 1972 showcasing how Walt Disney World is the Vacation Kingdom of the World!

“Courtesy Guest” book of 5 A thru E good on any attraction tickets from September 1972. These are the “complimentary” tickets that seem pretty plentiful even today. I think hotels and travel agents gave these out like candy, especially in the later 1970’s.

Here is a nice “7 Adventure" book from March 1972. It has all it’s a thru E tickets, but it's missing the main gate and transportation ticket.

Again, a slightly higher price than a “10 Adventure book” from Disneyland of the same time period. I wonder what justification Disney used to constantly charge more for the Magic Kingdom than at Disneyland. With fewer tickets and fewer attractions at the Magic Kingdom, you would think it would be cheaper? Maybe the Disney Co. had to recoup its capital expenses?

Let’s take a close look at a special Magic Kingdom Club ticket for Walt Disney World. Dated 1972, this ticket offered up all kind of fun options. I want to try the Trapper Canoe.

“Alcoholic beverages are not included unless specified” so there! Notice the Globe paper, it’s a little different than the attraction ticket paper. The water mark "Globe" seal is similar, but on this ticket it states “Globe Ticket Company”, on the attraction tickets it states “Globe Ticket Safety”.

Here’s a 1972 “A” ticket from Walt Disney World, you can see the different seal wording and the pattern of the background it wavy, not checkered like the special ticket above.

Gotta have some color! I love the Mickey Ear balloons.

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today’s magazine post is a long one, sorry if your browser is overloaded but this is such a great magazine I had to include all these scans. From June 28, 1958 it’s The Saturday Evening Post.

This five page article has some decent photographs and some excellent text about a three year old Disneyland. If you have time, read the entire article, it’s a nice detailed look at the early days of the park.

Walt Disney Word - Lake Buena Vista 2 Day Ticket Book - 1976

As Walt Disney World’s 40th birthday inches closer we’ve got yet another Disney World post. From September 1976 this “voided” ticket book was an “exclusive” offer from “Lake Buena Vista Motor Inn Plaza”, looks like the Inn was a pretty hip place (link).

Starting with the back of the ticket book we’ve got a “OK” rendering of the Motor Inn Plaza (I guess that's what it is?) and we see a fine value for $12 – 2 days admission plus 16 adventures in the magic Kingdom, why I’d say it’s a $20.10 value!

The front of the ticket book has a transportation ticket for each day.

Next up main gate admission tickets for two days.

Looking back at last Sunday's post, a couple of readers commented that the cover looked familiar yet something was different. Here's the cover from Sunday's post from the Spring 1974 issue of Walt Disney World's Vacationland.

Looking at that cover got me thinking about the cover to the Fall-Winter 1981/82 of Disneyland's Vacationland. While not the same artist, the idea is pretty much the same - "Where's Waldo?"!

Disney World Opens - Life Magazine October 1971

Disney World Opens from Life Magazine - October 15, 1971.

Be sure to check out the two page aerial photo. It’s taken from an odd angle and with a super wide fish-eye type lens. This place is disorienting enough for me, but the aerial photos give me weird dreams.

Now for some vintage ads: Oh boy, lets buy a Pinto? “It was alleged that the car's design allowed its fuel tank to be easily damaged in the event of a rear-end collision which sometimes resulted in deadly fires and explosions.” In reality the number of fire related deaths from those early Pintos (over 2 million built) was 27, about the same as any other car of the period. Actually, it’s kind of cute.

Now this is more my size. I once owned a 73 Lincoln Mark IV (similar underneath to this T-Bird) it had those early anti-lock brakes (Sure-Track) and they worked rather well.

Can’t ignore the GM folks, this is the last year before the ugly bumper laws made the front ends look awful!

Moving away from the ads for a moment and for the sports fans, here is a great vintage article about George Allen joining the Redskins after being with the Rams. The “RamSkins” Interesting that his Redskins would loose to Florida (that seasons' undefeated Miami Dolphins) in Superbowl VII (1973) 14 to 7.

Back for two more ads. How about a couple of vices?

Let’s start with some alcohol. Ah yes Seagram's 7 Crown, what a lively looking bunch of folks, look how neat and organized everything is. When my friends and I hang around all day and drink whisky on the rocks in tall glasses, we aren’t quite as well behaved…

***Disclaimer – Cigarettes are gross and they will kill you, don’t do it!*** That said, “The Lady has Taste” Eve cigarettes will always have and odd and disjointed place in my mind, as a 6 year old, these ads really had an profound impact on my little brain. “Smoke Pretty”, Well “Lady”, you’ll look “pretty” in that open casket!

A repeat post from 2008, but well worth a second look and if you missed it the first time, be sure and check it out!

From 1969: A Complete Edition About Walt Disney World “The Vacation Kingdom of the World”. This booklet is an extensive look at how the Disney company thought Walt Disney World would become. While a lot of these details did end up in the final version(s), several of the ideas died somewhere between this booklet and reality.

Fascinating stuff on these pages, the Western River Expedition would have been amazing from what I have read, same for Thunder Mesa.

Wow, these hotels would have been neat, that big dome at the Persian would have been something to see.

This Hotel turned out nicely.

This is the last page of the text. Check out where some of the needed cash would come from “regular cash flow accruing to the corporation from its operations during the next three years”. Counting chickens before they hatch can be dangerous…. Was this the cash that would have paid for Western River Expedition & Thunder Mesa or the Hotels that never were?

The front and back covers are actually one big picture. It’s this great late 60’s style artist concept of the entire “phase one” of the new resort. Hey, is the Monorail going THRU Tomorrowland like it’s supposed to?

Walt Disney World - Grad Nite '74

When I think of “Grad Nite” Disneyland usually comes to mind but of course the East Coast Park had its “Grad Nites” also. The cover to the Grad Nite ’74 souvenir program sure is interesting, in fact it kind of gives me the creeps, I think the “mannequin” faced couple is primarily responsible for that.

Canned Heat and The Stylistics, presumably not playing together, but then again, its 1974 so who knows… Maybe this is when they formed the “Betcha by Golly, Wow – On the Road Again” tour.

Walt Disney World Transportation Tickets

Our sister park in Florida has a Fortieth Birthday coming up in a couple of weeks so let’s help celebrate with some Walt Disney World posts! Sometimes when I post Walt Disney World stuff I get mixed reactions, there’s a couple readers that have told me they just skip right over my WDW posts – no worries, there’s always plenty of Disneyland stuff to post, but for the next couple weeks expect to see a few Walt Disney World posts.

Let’s take a look at a some WDW Transportation Tickets. Yes you park about 20 miles from the actual theme park in Florida so walking is not an option, OK its not that far, but unless you can swim, you'll need one of these tickets. Usually a Transportation Ticket was included in the ticket book as seen here in my September 2010 post (link). These tickets appear to have been sold separately, I guess in case you wanted to only ride the Monorail and not enter the park, sounds fun to me!

Use this Transportation Ticket and you assume all risk. “They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into, I say, let 'em crash”.

The Child ticket was $1 cheaper than the Adult Ticket and pink?

I don’t have a standalone Junior Transportation Ticket in my collection, so here’s one attached to a ticket book along with a Main Gate Admission ticket.

This book only had one ticket left, but boy are there a lot of good choices on this “D” ticket from February 1977. Mickey Mouse Revue for me!

Those elegant curly-cues let you know this is the upscale “East Coast” park.

For a few years they didn’t put the attraction list on the inside back cover, just a note about the “free” attractions.

Of course Florida had to be different with the back cover and go with a “Portrait” orientation.

Well this is just barely a "Disneyland" article, but since there is a vintage Disneyland photo that's a good enough excuse to post some cool advertisements. Interesting "for profit" article - I wonder if Walt read stuff like this and what he thought of it?

Alaska was big news in July of 1958, wow that's a lot of land!

Great color palettes.

Future Disneyland sponsor showing off some cool systems, anti-skid brakes, maybe one daythey'll put those in automobiles?

Blog reader Connie reports having used once of these little recorders, I have too, weren't they fun! A flexible belt that's a record you record yourself, needless to say these machines were expensive.

Who else is ready to drink whiskey while wearing a kilt and playing a bag-pipe? Major?

Anyone want to pan for gold?

I'm happy to report that Dapper Day at Disneyland was a blast! A nice turn out of a couple hundred well dressed, polite classy people - at one point it actually felt like one of those old Disneyland slides had come back to life. Checkout some pics from the event on Daveland's website (link). The event is set again for February 2012, I'll be there, you should try and get there too.

MSEP Commemorative Disneyland Passport - 1996

Today’s special Commemorative Disneyland Passport scans were donated by Major Pepperidge over at Gorilla’s Don’t Blog (link) – Thanks Major! From the Main Street Electrical Parades’ “Farewell Season” these tickets sure are elaborate.

As Major noticed, these two tickets are a set with the same serial number and “if you put them side by side (so that the "drum" overlapped), it makes one long image of the parade.” Very cool! Thanks again Major.

Comparing the artwork on the tickets and this “Annual Passholder Event” program they seem similar, but the artwork on the tickets is much more vivid. See the rest of the program from my prior post here (link).

Let’s take a look at Disneyland on Labor Day Weekend 1984. This group of snap shots is mildly interesting as the Rivers of America were drained and these include a few interior pictures of America Sings which had only four years left.

Two Wonderful Ways to Enjoy Disneyland - February 1964

Time for yet another “Two Wonderful Ways to Enjoy Disneyland" parking lot brochure. You can see a few of my previous “Two Wonderful Ways” posts here (link) or see a boat load of them over at Stuff From the Park here (link).

This February 1964 version has an unusual map of the parking lot, an aerial photo! I’m thinking that photo is older than 1964?

The Deluxe 15 Ticket Book for an adult was still a great deal for just $4.95

Looking ahead to Bonus Sunday here’s the cover to the Fall 1964 edition of Vacationland.

A great article on how Disneyland was also intended for “upper age bracket, over fifty citizens” with Main Street being an authentic re-creation of a town they grew up in. It’s odd that Main Street no longer has that effect on anyone or hardly anyone. Seems reason enough to “re-create” some vintage Disneyland so the next generation of “over fifty citizens” can have a similar experience - give us some of our balloons back!

I don’t know much about Arthur Godfrey, but he seemed like a nice man and that rack of Dolly Madison cakes sure looks yummy!

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Today's Disneyland related magazine is from March 1960, "Rodding and Re-Styling" is a TV Guide size magazine for the hot rod crowd.

The First Annual Car Club Day was held at Disneyland's Holidayland. This article is all about custom rods so there really isn't anything about Disneyland and very little about the mysterious Holidayland, but there are some cool cars daddio!

There are no splashy advertisements so how about a fun article on how this guy and his "Renewed Stude".
