Grad Nite 87

I’m not done torturing you with Grad Nites yet, here’s a fun neon crew from Gran Nite ’87! The girl standing at the entrance of the Omnibus looks like she has a deep voice and is also running the entire show, everyone else just looks, well, kind of nerdy (this coming from someone who owned one of those skinny ties the guy on the upper right is wearing).

Over 1,000 schools participated in Grad Nite ’87! I wonder how many grads “fantasized with the magic of Captain EO”? Awesome Rocket Jets photo, wow! There's (Rainbow?) Mickey with a new 1987 Star Tours. Don’t forget, Star Tours closes July 26th 2010 until May 2011 for the installation of Star Tours 2.0. I'm going to try and see the last showing of 1.0 in July and the first showing of 2.0 in May 2011!!!

Everybody Wang Chung Tonight” is that a question or a statement? Anyway, rock with them, Bobby Brown, Krash and some other people that I will admit I DO remember…

We were all there” how corny!

Now I know why there are so many schools listed on these later grad nite programs, 1,000 schools is a lot! Mine is on there, is yours?

America on Parade Ticket and Guest Band Application - June 1975

Ready for a double-dose of America on Parade? First up is one of those magical unlimited use (except shooting galleries) tickets Disneyland and a Special Performance of America on Parade. This ticket was good all day on Sunday, June 15, 1975 and included reserve seating for the 10pm performance of America on Parade.

I posted a similar ticket back in June 2008 (link) however that ticket was only good for four hours (6pm to 10pm)! Note the dreaded string with no support at the punch hole, a disaster waiting to happen.

Here’s a fun application packet supplied by the Disneyland Music Department so your band can apply to be in “America on Parade”. Travel arrangements naturally provided by the Walt Disney Travel Company.

Tony Peluso signed this nice letter on bond paper (Gilbert Bond – Opaque 25% cotton).

Hey this information sheet makes it sound like a blast to be in this parade. Guest groups get free admission to Disneyland and One 5 Ride “E” coupon ticket book for each member”. NICE!

You better print clearly and please, do not send your demo tape on an 8-track!

Rats no Kazoo, I’m out...

Just in case you don’t know how to make a demo tape, here you go.

p.s. - Thanks go out to D.O.P. for the band application package!

Hudson Contest Winners at Disneyland - August 1955

From August 1955 this press photo shows the Hudson Contest Winners. They seem to be a rather well behaved group. It looks like it's a hot day and the Mickey planter looks pretty barren!

35 children accompanied by their parents participated in Hudson’s five-day all expense paid trip including two days at “Disneyland Park”.

From last July, here’s my post on the 1955 Hudson Magazine that features Walt Disney and Disneyland (link). I’ve got about 20 of these little magazines that cover the period of this contest yet there is no mention of the contest in any of the issues?

Grad Nite - 1990

Grad Nite 1990 is brought to you today by blog reader "The Julanders" - thank you for the awesome scans! The contributor commented that their 1990 Grad Nite materials weren't as "colorful or catchy" as some of the other 1990's grad Nites. Maybe not a colorful, but they're pretty catchy. $25 buys you the magic. To keep the "atmosphere magical" you wont be wearing your "midriff outfits" or "thonged sandals" to this event.

It does lack color... Looking at the events of 1990, we were dealing the recent after effects of a massive oil spill and a war in the Gulf was just around the corner, sounds kind of familiar.

Jody Watley is the only name I recognize - can you believe this was 20 years ago!

Is your school on this long list?

A 1990 Dream Machine ticket, "Sorry no win" I'm shocked!

Look where The Julanders stayed! Far out!

And lastly this photo cover is not from The Julanders, this is from my collection but not my grad nite. Out of respect for that awkward period we all went through as adolescents I wont post the inside photo.

Thanks again to The Julanders for these great scans!

Big Thunder - Fall 1979

From the “this just in” department, here’s a great souvenir photo for the opening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland – Fall 1979. I was going to hold this until September, but it’s so neat I had to share it now. Those are guests right?

What's with the sad face on Jodie Foster? The photo is a Polaroid measuring 5" by 4" and in sepia tone which sadly Polaroid no longer makes (maybe thats she's sad). Polaroid does however have a NEW instant film camera (link) – I want one!

Disneyland in Slides - 1967/68

It’s time for a few vintage Disneyland slides. This first one is from April 1968 and sure is a beauty. Some cool looking people hanging around the entrance. The three guys in blue jackets on the right all have matching shoes! Those yellow and purple flower beds were way cool.

The remaining four slides in today’s post are from January 1967. Unfortunately the color is pretty shot; these are “Agfachrome” slides, they're no Kodachrome's! Three boats in one picture, not bad.

Not to add to partners statue bashing, but the hub looked far better with this simple look.

New Orleans Square in the shade!

Main Street all washed out. The park looks like a very light crowd, my kind of day!

Grad Nite - 1990's Style

Grad Nite in the 1990's was certainly a decade of change. Shown in today's post are grad nite programs from 1992, 1994 and 1997. These aren't nearly as fun as the 60's and 70's version, so you get three for the price of one today!

1992

1994 - Someone went nuts with Print Master Deluxe!

1997

Got Munchies??? That sounds so wrong....

Flying Models - September 1956

Welcome to Magazine Monday. Flying Models Magazine from September 1956 featured a very young Tomorrowland’s flight circle.

Here is the entire Disneyland article, that’s right, there isn’t one! Just a little blurb near the bottom crediting Disneyland Inc., for the cover photo.

Cox would not become the sponsor for a few more years, but their Thimble-Drome engines were already a hit!

How come my Monogram models never looked like these?

24 hours in the air – wow!

I want one of those adorable little Sea Fury Outboard motors, how darn cute is that?

Glow Plugs and cans of “Glow fuel”, what a neato hobby!!!

Trip Report - June 16, 2010

Please visit my Trip Report Blog for visit to Disneyland from Wednesday June 16th.

----> Disneyland Trip Report <----

There's an extra long part at the end of the report where I try and detail some of the super art work in "Day One" Disneyland display in the Main Street Bank building.

Disneyland U.S.A. - People and Places Ad Sheets

Here's a fun advertisement for 1956's Disneyland U.S.A. - People and Places. These sheets must have been for theater owners as it talks all about how to get the trailer for the film and suggestions on placing ads.

Also included are some great "Ad Slugs".

I want all those accessories!
